cdrnsf··on Self-host your mail server
I stood Stalwart up recently and it's going well so far. I opted to use an SMTP relay instead of delivering from the VPS directly.
cdrnsf··on Codeberg Divides
This decision is consistent with the community Codeberg has attracted of late. It's smaller, independent and takes stances that are not in line with competitors like GitHub. If you want something less reliable, at larger scale and filled with AI projects that GitHub is clearly encouraging, you should use GitHub.
cdrnsf··on Private healthcare makes industries less innovative. It's time for change
Everything after $5 million is taxed at 100%, no exceptions and used to fund education, healthcare and infrastructure (this would be before I go after the military budget with a hatchet).
cdrnsf··on Private healthcare makes industries less innovative. It's time for change
Perhaps mountains of frustration punctuated by relief that soon vanishes?

I’d cap income at $5 million a year and strip the tax code down to something devoid of exceptions, but I’m in no position to do that.

I'd love to decouple insurance form employment and I'd also love to do away with the private insurance system in the US. I've always had insurance and the experience has been as uniformly poor, regardless of provider, as it is continuous. Any positive interactions and outcomes have felt like happy accidents, not the system working.

Remove the private actors, the adversarial billing, the friction with providers. It, at its best, ranges from bad to outright awful.

(I'd also love to do away with tax prep — the government knows what is owed, so why make folks prepare their own count and hope it matches?)

cdrnsf··on The Largest Vocabulary in Hip Hop (2017)
I love that Aesop Rock remains in the lead.
cdrnsf··on CD sales growth outpaced vinyl in the first half of 2026
I'd love that — didn't CDBaby used to do that? Hopefully something'll crop up if the popularity keeps increasing.

Shipping on vinyl is rough — even shirts from anywhere outside of the US have tipped towards being hard to justify with shipping and all. I'll usually go for Bandcamp in that case (or buy something licensed in the US in the hopes that the license fee is at least something).

I have a ton of shirts, but have been sticking to buy limited edition ones or from bands at shows lately. I live in SoCal (north of LA) and end up suffering in the heat. Nothing did some non-black ones for their new album at least https://bandofnothing.shop/collections/apparel/products/esse...

Buy CDs, buy vinyl, buy merch, go see shows — support artists instead of platforms and middlemen wherever you can. This is a welcome trend.
cdrnsf··on The lost joy of music piracy
As someone with a tattoo of a clickwheel iPod, I can't help but endorse this.

All of my favorite recommendations and artists have come from friends I know in real life, online or both. Zines, blogs and other music communities are all wonderful sources as well. last.fm's trove of recommendations are still accurate and I hope it holds on.

I have different friends who I ask for recommendations from different genres and then end up in exploring further once they've opened the door.

Everything I listen to is from MP3s streamed through Navidrome living in an S3 bucket. My larger library is in another bucket and mirrored elsewhere. I collect some records but opt for the convenience of listening digitally and that listening consists of whole albums, never playlists (and never anything AI generated).

cdrnsf··on Hack Reveals Suno AI Music Generator Scraped YouTube, Deezer, and Genius
An AI company making money off of the work of others. Par for the course.
cdrnsf··on OpenAI's First Device Will Be Moveable, Screenless Speaker Built as AI Companion
Great. Another thing listening in on your conversations.
cdrnsf··on LAPD lets contract with surveillance giant Flock expire
What's really surprising is that it's the LAPD, of all agencies, that are making this decision while violating civil rights concerns. https://lapublicpress.org/2025/11/lapd-settlements/

> The top three payout categories totaled $345 million. Civil rights violations, police shootings, excessive use of force, and illegal searches collectively accounted for $183 million, almost half of the claim amounts.

Plenty of civil rights violations, but Flock is too much even for them.

cdrnsf··on LAPD lets contract with surveillance giant Flock expire
The city doesn't run around accusing private citizens of being terrorists like Flock's CEO does.
cdrnsf··on LAPD lets contract with surveillance giant Flock expire
I'd trust a municipality I have a vote in more than a private company.
cdrnsf··on Precursor
Great. More surveillance, slow browsing and turnstile-style false positives to blanket the web.
cdrnsf··on Apple sues OpenAI, accuses ex-employees of stealing trade secrets
It must have some sort of value if OpenAI went through the trouble to get access to it.
cdrnsf··on Flock threatens to sue private group in California that discusses diplomacy, law
Thanks. Updated to clarify.
cdrnsf··on EU Commission: addictive design Instagram and Facebook in breach of the DSA
Good. We have the benefit of enough hindsight to know that these platforms have had a net negative impact on everything and everyone they touch.
cdrnsf··on What's slowing down the AI buildout
Apparently they're fast tracking gas fired power plant approvals, so we can expect production to increase and the climate crisis to worsen. https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2026/07/donald-trump-ep...
cdrnsf··on Marc Andreessen Says One Job Is Mostly Safe from AI: Venture Capitalist
It could definitely take over coming up with hilariously bad takes for him.

Until or, better yet, if.
cdrnsf··on OpenAI ‘in early talks to give 5% stake to US government’
How much is a 5% stake in a money pit really worth?
cdrnsf··on County with 37 Data Centers Asks Schools to 'Conserve Electricity'
Unplug the data centers instead.
cdrnsf··on U.S. government will decide who gets to use GPT-5.6
Ah, so the specter of Biden doing it was bad, but this administration putting into practice is great.
cdrnsf··on Data centers trigger voter backlash
Nothing this technology offers is, to me, worth the noise pollution or increase in water and electricity rates.
cdrnsf··on OpenAI leans toward waiting until next year for IPO
> The A.I. company’s advisers are pushing its chief executive, Sam Altman, to move slowly after SpaceX’s stock has been volatile and as the start-up grapples with financial challenges.

SpaceX's stock volatile? It's a shame nobody saw that coming.
