cdrnsf··on OpenAI still doesn't seem to have a handle on all of its rogue AI activity
They scraped the entire internet to build their product, allowing them to profit off the labor of countless others without asking. They helped elect a doddering fascist with an economic plan they could manipulate. They say their technology will take everyone's jobs and have the audacity to act surprised when there's backlash. They push for data centers in communities that do not want them and help accelerate the climate crisis. Now they let agents loose to make them look more capable than they, perhaps, really are (which is very likely a play for regulatory capture). Meanwhile they hype claims of doomsday to again oversell their technology's capabilities. Any pause or slowdown they agree to would be to slow their infrastructure expenditures.

What a detestable institution.

cdrnsf··on DoorDash Spent $1.4M Trying to Stop Mamdani from Becoming Mayor. Now We Know Why
I'll concede the point on variety but I don't think the platforms or their terms are fair to restaurants, delivery drivers or perhaps even customers (though they're clearly choosing to engage). Our favorite Mexican food place in town will fill the orders but isn't happy with them and I imagine they're not alone.
cdrnsf··on DoorDash Spent $1.4M Trying to Stop Mamdani from Becoming Mayor. Now We Know Why
DoorDash and gig companies generally are a play to destabilize employment and turn as many people as possible from employees entitled to benefits and legal protections into contractors that can be discarded at whim. How is ordering, say, a pizza via DoorDash in any way better for you, as a customer, than ordering from a pizza place that employs drivers?
cdrnsf··on Economic policy for AGI
There's no reason we need to and there's every reason to believe that the people and companies foisting this technology on society will accrue the benefits and dump the fallout on everyone else.
cdrnsf··on Proposed Rule: Eliminating the Discretionary 60-Day Grace Period
This administration lives at the intersection of cruelty and stupidity.
cdrnsf··on EPA eliminates rule that limits planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions from pp
This administration and its supporters are little more than a death cult.
cdrnsf··on Anthropic tells investors it will be profitable for second straight quarter
I imagine there are many other businesses that would be profitable if they excluded all of their largest costs from their reporting.
cdrnsf··on Apple's Siri AI Can Be Swapped Out for Claude, ChatGPT, Code Shows
My favorite Siri behavior is telling it, on my phone, to turn on a focus state only for it to transfer the request to a nearby HomePod that tells me it can't help with that. I hope the new changes to it are an improvement, but the bar is currently buried in the dirt.
cdrnsf··on Why Tech Oligarchs Are Willing to Risk Apocalypse

cdrnsf··on Nitter and XCancel resume service after legal advice
Of course. xAI can also run gas generators to power its data centers and pump toxins into the air around local communities. Grok can generate non-consensual nude images of women (and CSAM). Their owner can make nazi salutes and demolish agencies millions depend on. Rules, laws and ethics are for poor people.
cdrnsf··on Gmail to end support for "Send as" for third-party addresses, such as @yahoo.com
So, when do they drop support for IMAP and SMTP altogether?
cdrnsf··on NYC mayor Mamdani imposes 1 year ban on AI for schools through 8th grade
The current administration has shown no interest in regulating AI or addressing its harms so I see no problem with a city making this choice.
cdrnsf··on New York Times and The Athletic workers demand company scrap Kalshi deal
I'm pretty sure the real fascists are the ones sending masked thugs to kill people in the streets. Reasonable regulation hardly meets the definition.
cdrnsf··on New York Times and The Athletic workers demand company scrap Kalshi deal
Yes. It feels more and more like a casino as time goes by.
cdrnsf··on New York Times and The Athletic workers demand company scrap Kalshi deal
Sports gambling is a cancer, as are prediction markets. None of it should've been legalized and all of it should be banned.
cdrnsf··on The Post-AI Internet Doesn't Look Great
Slop is awful, but I've found networks like Mastodon and Bluesky where most users are actively antagonistic to still be enjoyable. Beyond that I've taken to leaning on RSS, private chats and automated filtering where it makes sense. Folks are setting up blogs again too. Most of the bigger platforms are flooded with slop, but their owners are encouraging that. Those spaces weren't healthy to begin with and they aren't now, but the reasons are different.
cdrnsf··on Saving money on Google Photos with Immich: Your own personal photo storage
I started there and ended up rewriting it in Preact/Go which is the direction I've been heading with the apps I maintain for myself.
cdrnsf··on Saving money on Google Photos with Immich: Your own personal photo storage
I love this project — I replaced Apple photos with it and it's been smooth sailing the whole way through. I have a public proxy sitting in front of it as well (which it makes easy by letting you configure external sharing URLs), so I can share out password-protected or public galleries and accept uploads without exposing it directly.
cdrnsf··on Fastpotify
I've been using Navidrome for a while and love it (long enough to have written an iOS + macOS client). I mount my music from a B2 bucket and use a shell script to sync additions to it. AudioMuse-AI does a great job generating playlists and populating similar artists. There are lyrics plugins, an Apple Music plugin that can populate metadata and on and on. It's a great system and free from the catalogue rot and slop that's been eroding the benefits of streaming for a while now.
cdrnsf··on U.S. sanctions against the A/I Collective
It's not an organized group. It's a label being used as a cudgel to attack anyone who doesn't like the current president (who also happens to have the world's most fragile ego/thinnest skin/whatever his soul crushing pathology actually is).
cdrnsf··on U.S. sanctions against the A/I Collective
While we're doing hypotheticals, what does Elon Musk's destruction of USAID and the downstream deaths resulting from it make him?
cdrnsf··on U.S. sanctions against the A/I Collective
Sure, there are examples like that in any large enough group. The folks who stormed the capitol on January 6th should still be in jail too. Breaking laws usually yields punishment under said laws (unless you support or in the good graces of the current president). Labelling broad swaths of people who protest your agenda and don't like your masked goons killing and kidnapping people in their communities terrorists is a gross abuse of power.
cdrnsf··on Chicken products recalled in five states due to “false marks of inspection”
Chase that road kill with some raw milk.
cdrnsf··on Bye, Bye GitHub
I've had exactly zero issues hosting Forgejo. GitHub is only going to get worse.
cdrnsf··on Data centers' 'oh s–t' moment
Onward to robot god nirvana, the dead red rock in the sky and all that then.
cdrnsf··on Data centers' 'oh s–t' moment
Oh, wonderful! OpenAI and Anthropic's structural inability to earn a return for there investors should be no problem.

What is NVIDIA's outlook should their customers' funding run out? Or what's the long tail outlook on Google killing its search product?

cdrnsf··on U.S. sanctions against the A/I Collective
Or the long tail of bodies that will come out of the USAID cuts.
cdrnsf··on Data centers' 'oh s–t' moment
OpenAI, Anthropic, Google selling equity for the first time since their IPO, all of the downstream consumers of the frontier labs. NVIDIA is perhaps the only one profiting from actually selling something. Who hits a liquidity event before the house of cards blows over?
cdrnsf··on Data centers' 'oh s–t' moment
Their debt load and infrastructure costs compared to their relatively meager earnings and widespread public distrust is concerning, no?
cdrnsf··on U.S. sanctions against the A/I Collective
Perhaps not, but this administration is in no way principled or accurate in its diagnosis of anything so their labelling of any group doesn't deserve the benefit of the doubt.
