cdiamand··on GitHub Copilot is generally available
Same here. This has absolutely helped improve the speed at which I code and reduced the cognitive burden significantly.

It's definitely not perfect, but it's worth the price to me and if I can pay and help the product improve, it's a no-brainer.

cdiamand··on How do video games stay in sync?
Here are some article that address wall hacking - not quite what you're looking for but, still a great read.

cdiamand··on The awake ape: Why people sleep less than their primate relatives
If you live in a loud and brightly lit environment, I highly, highly recommend blackout curtains. They've been a revelation in terms of improving length and quality of sleep.
cdiamand··on Max Datom: Interactive Datomic Tutorial
Fun tutorial! When does it make sense to use Datomic over something like MySQL or PostgreSQL?
cdiamand··on A highly-available move opertaion for replicated trees [pdf]
Reading through the book right now. It's really illuminating. Highly recommend to anyone trying to plug any of the gaps in their knowledge of system design.
cdiamand··on USDA announces plans to support innovative American-made fertilizer
My understanding is that there are three popular types of fertilizer and all three require materials (phosphate, nitrogen, potash) that currently in a shortage.

Much of the potash of the world is in Belarus and Russia. Nitrogen fertilizer requires liquid natural gas, of which the price is surging. Phosphate based fertilizers are currently under export ban by China.

cdiamand··on Ask HN: What do I need to learn to be useful as a hacker to defend my country?
I have seen this recommended - https://overthewire.org/wargames/
cdiamand··on How fresh grads with zero experience get hired as senior engineers

cdiamand··on One-Man Amphibious 'Copter' [video] (1955)
My palms are sweating after watching that. Risk incarnate.

That being said, I wish modern news and video had more of the magic from this time period when it comes to composition. Love the music and the narrative voice.

cdiamand··on US Special Operations Command picks Anduril to lead counter-drone in $1B deal
As a counterpoint, the officers I know are critical thinkers, realists, and generally very capable people.
cdiamand··on Charm – Tools to make the command line glamorous
Looks cool! Are there any security risks posed by ssh'ing into an unknown server?
cdiamand··on Spinthariscopes
Youtube recommended the following video after watching the above. Pretty neat to see the paths of the charged particles.

cdiamand··on Articles on Cyber-Warfare from the Modern War Institute at West Point
Looks like the USMA has taken defensive action against all the HN visitors pummeling it's website. (pages loading slowly, if at all)
cdiamand··on FAA investigating controversial crash video
Came here to say this. Pilots are drilled to work an extensive engine-out checklist during training.

In this situation, the pilot had what seemed like a significant amount of altitude (time) to work the problem.

cdiamand··on Ask HN: Where are you getting your money's worth?
Spotify. The ads haven't gotten jarring enough that it makes sense.

DigitalOcean. While I'm sure it's not the MOST affordable option, I think the value is pretty good. (If anyone has more affordable option please throw it out there!)

Minecraft. Bought the windows 10 version to play with some friends and check out the new world generation. Infinite creativity for ~20 bucks.

cdiamand··on Wish HN: Happy Holidays
Happy Holidays all! Thankful for HN and the community!
cdiamand··on Excerpt from CIA's Simple Sabotage Field Manual (1944)
Maybe we should form a committee to decide what those channels are before we do anything too brash?
cdiamand··on Excerpt from CIA's Simple Sabotage Field Manual (1944)
Interesting, didn't know of that connection between OSS and Marcuse. I can see why one would err.. tiptoe around this.
cdiamand··on Show HN: Stixify – Turn unstructured data into structured threat intelligence
"Add files, unstructured text extracts or other content you use as sources of intelligence."

This page could do more to establish trust. (I'm not really in the threat analysis space), but It seems like a big ask to blindly upload threat related intelligence files to a landing page on the internet.

cdiamand··on From Node to Ruby on Rails
Anyone have any recommendations for books or resources to look at when scaling a rails app beyond a single database, or when your app starts to move into the realm of "big data"?

Asking for.... a friend.

cdiamand··on The Arctic Is Warming Four Times Faster Than the Rest of the World
Do you have any kind of evidence that this is a widely held belief amongst this demographic?

You're advocating we stop reproducing as a dignified response to your perception that civilization is ending?

cdiamand··on Ask HN: What are some great engineering blogs?
The https://www.indiehackers.com/ forum probably has a lot of what you want, with small scale projects abound.

The riot games engineering blog is at a larger scale, but still awesome - https://technology.riotgames.com/

Is a pretty good read as well.

cdiamand··on Ask HN: What metrics do you pay attention to?
From my business life I'm looking at the MRR of my project https://topstonks.com, our site traffic, etc.

From my personal life -

I guess stepping on the scale in the mornings, haha. That's a depressing one to watch. There are the obvious personal finance metrics as well.

Also keeping an eye on inflation... maybe Covid infection numbers as well since those seem to be in the news alot. It's kind of hard not to see those numbers lately.

cdiamand··on Apple Joins Blender Development Fund
It's great to see Blender get the support. The user numbers seem to be arcing upwards.

https://www.blender.org/news/blender-by-the-numbers-2020/

If you've ever had a passing interest in Blender or 3d modeling I recommend checking out the donut tutorial, which is fast becoming the "hello world" of blender -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPrnSACiTJ4

And check out all the donuts -

cdiamand··on Coinbase NFT: Create. Collect. Connect. Launching This Year
The NFT space is pretty interesting.

I've got some friends who are modeling the CryptoPunks prices with machine learning over at https://deepnftvalue.com

Pretty interesting stuff. These asset prices behave pretty exotically.

cdiamand··on Retail jobs are treated as a temporary bridge to something better, but why?
McDonalds DID make for an awesome starting job, in my experience. I worked there as a teen and had a host of positive life experiences in that first role. I made a bunch of new friends with people my age. I got my first paycheck and it put cleanly into focus the value of money and how HARD it can be to make it if you work....at McDonalds.

Was also exposed to the workings of possibly one of the largest business machines on the planet. It's automation incarnate and kind of a beautiful thing.

cdiamand··on Women are nearly half of new gun buyers, study finds
Is it illegal, taboo, and bred out though?

We live in a culture of glorified violence seen widely in film, print, pop culture. We've got an enormous catalog of shooter videogames going back decades that our youngster clamor to purchase and play.

We've got a set of laws that allow you to take steps to defend yourself in your own home, with varying degrees of strictness and leniency.

Anecdotally, I know many people in the middle class who, while abhorring violence, would defend themselves and their families.

I'm not sure I agree.

cdiamand··on How to Study Effectively
If you live in a bright-at-night, or noisy environment, you may wish to consider blackout curtains.

We recently bought a set and it has been a revelation. Darker, quieter room. Better sleep.

cdiamand··on Forest Service officials close all California national forests
Is there an argument to be made for just letting the fires burn? Don't the fires have a positive effect on the soil?
cdiamand··on Ask HN: It's 2021 and QuickTime still doesn't export MP4. What is going on?
So, is the answer that Apple doesn't exist, or that Apple doesn't love us?
