ccollins··on How an Engineer Does Pizza
I've been following Jeff's pizza advice for about 1.5 years. It's great! A few notes:

0) crank your oven up as much as possible, and let it preheat for at least 20 minutes.

1) dough is super important - a slow rise in the fridge > 1 1/2 hour rise > 1 hour rise > store-bought dough.

2) Tomatoes in a can are always better than fresh tomatoes because they have already been cooked (trust me).

3) use the best mozzarella you can find, preferably mozzarella di bufala (made from water buffalo milk)

4) for the dough, use King Arthur Flour and bottled water - it makes a noticeable difference.

ccollins··on The Anatomy of a Perfect Landing Page
Thanks - maybe downvoted because there is little explanation. So just to clarify:

Many people have an opinion about the perfect landing page based on some narrow experience. See http://www.google.com/search?q=perfect+landing+page for examples. Absorbing these guidelines provides a good starting point for any landing page optimization campaign, but only a starting point.

Claiming you have created a "perfect" landing page is simply wrong. There is no such thing as a perfect landing page. Through rigorous A/B/n & multivariate testing you can identify pages with better conversion rates and discard poor performers. It is also important to note that this optimization is not necessarily transferable to different ad messaging, user segments, products, or conversion goals.

ccollins··on The Anatomy of a Perfect Landing Page
No, this is the anatomy of a perfect landing page:

  <% ab_test('determine_the_best_page_with_numbers_to_back_you_up', ['page1', 'page2']) do |action_name| %>

        render :action => action_name

  <% end %>

ccollins··on Military Bans Disks, Threatens Courts-Martial to Stop New Leaks
That article is enlightening - it changed my take on Assange from "guy who is really good at disseminating classified information" to "guy who is really good at executing a well articulated plan to reduce secrecy in government".

These few lines sum it up nicely:

Because we all basically know that the US state — like all states — is basically doing a lot of basically shady things basically all the time, simply revealing the specific ways they are doing these shady things will not be, in and of itself, a necessarily good thing. In some cases, it may be a bad thing, and in many cases, the provisional good it may do will be limited in scope. The question for an ethical human being — and Assange always emphasizes his ethics — has to be the question of what exposing secrets will actually accomplish, what good it will do, what better state of affairs it will bring about.

ccollins··on The Gentle Art of Poverty
I was really curious to know the amounts of money the author was talking about in 2010 terms.

His annual income was $1980 + $168.75 = $2148.75, which was 6% of "what I earned in my prime..."

So, 100 / 6 * 2148.75 = $35,812.5 annual income

The article was written in either 1977 or 1969 (see comment by sorbus), so let's guess his highest salary was earned in either 1965 or 1975.

Using the US Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI Inflation calculator (http://www.bls.gov/data/inflation_calculator.htm), income during his prime in 2010 dollars was somewhere between $145,321.53 (1975) and $248,199.95 (1965)

Depending on when he wrote this article, his retirement income was somewhere between $7,740.89 (1977) and $12,781.96 (1969)

Long story short, the author took a 95% hit to his income in "retirement" (~$200k -> ~$10k in 2010 dollars)

ccollins··on Ask HN: Who Is Hiring? (October 2010 Edition)
San Francisco!

Airbnb is hiring - I think we have around 50 openings at this point. http://www.airbnb.com/jobs. Regardless of the position, we just want hungry, smart, and awesome people.

For engineers, we wrote a blog post 2 days ago explaining some of our most interesting challenges - http://blog.airbnb.com/hard-problems-big-opportunity

In particular, we need some front end engineers!! http://www.airbnb.com/jobs/position?jvi=omNoVfwc Email me directly if you are a badass front end engineer and like mustaches & ridiculous sunglasses - chris@airbnb.com

ccollins··on How to Recruit a Frontend Hero
I don't think so. First of all, a Frontend Hero needs to have design sense, ability to learn quickly, empathy with users, trustworthiness to "fill in the blanks", and the balls to say no to designs or features that are unnecessary, impractical, and time-consuming. What Sebastian Deutsch described is a CSS / Javascript quirks specialist.

Additionally, the article never really touched on how to recruit these people - it just lists screening questions to ask during an interview. To recruit a Frontend Hero, you need to hire great designers and create a culture that treats front end engineers as first class citizens.

Incidentally, we're doing that at Airbnb right now. http://www.airbnb.com/jobs/show/8

ccollins··on Tweet Less, Kiss More
An effective, easy to implement policy that has made me happier is the no cell phone rule when eating, period. It's nice when I'm eating solo and even nicer when I'm eating with someone else.

Fun Fact: My mother clipped this article out and snail mailed it to me from east coast -> SF. I received it 3 days ago. Maybe being connected doesn't put you ahead of the curve.

ccollins··on Understanding JavaScript Arrays
I want to stress that the following will work, but get you in trouble. Javascript does not support associative arrays.

  var myData = new Array;

  myData['key1'] = 'value1';
  myData['key2'] = 'value2';
  myData['key3'] = 'value3';

  myData.length; //0
ccollins··on Tab Candy: Mozilla Labs is making Firefox tabs sweet
My biggest problem with this approach is I lose context. I prefer tabs to open on the end of my browser. That way I can open 5 tabs, type Command-9 to to get to the last tab, and quickly deal with my tabs in a LIFO manner.

Tab Candy seems awesome to me for power browsing (20+ tabs), as long as there are intuitive keyboard shortcuts.

ccollins··on No, that is not a competitive advantage
You're right, but that is neither Google nor Apple's strategy. A winning strategy is to hire and cultivate the best {engineers, designers, leaders, etc.} - if you get the best, then by definition the competition cannot catch up.
ccollins··on Ask HN: What paid services do you use now for your startup?
At Airbnb we're using Amazon AWS (EC2, EBS, ELB, S3, Cloudfront), Dropbox, Cloudkick, Pingdom, Twilio, Clickatell, ZenDesk, RingCentral, BrainTree, MaxMind, MailChimp ...

and more I can't think of right now :)

ccollins··on Data URIs make CSS sprites obsolete
The demonstration of speed difference is bogus. Really we should be comparing Jammit vs Sprite load time. Of course 100 files will take longer to load than 1 file!!! But how about 1 extra sprite vs Jammit? Here's a demo:

ccollins··on Ask HN - Rate my startup: Gigayo.com
No, CS. But I think empathy is as important as coding ability when building products for other humans.
ccollins··on Ask HN - Rate my startup: Gigayo.com
I am in a similar state of confusion after clicking around briefly. One way to approach it is to have a clearer one-liner, e.g. "Deploy and track beautiful targeted ads in 5 minutes" and then spell out how I can accomplish that. So boiling it down to three steps might be:

(1) Create a banner using our templates (and show examples here so I have some idea what you are talking about)

(2) Set your daily budget, ad networks, and demographics. We'll handle the details

(3) Track your progress using our custom campaign monitor

This information would ideally replace your "Free" banner and copy that is the focal point of your design.

ccollins··on Ask HN: How/Where to take a month off
Check out Peru for a few reasons:

July / August = peak season.

Peruvian food is delicious.

You can catch Peru's Independence day(s) at the end of July (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiestas_Patrias_%28Peru%29)

ccollins··on Reinvent the Wheel Often
Personal growth of employees within an organization is absolutely crucial for long term commercial success. A company that encourages personal & professional growth will cultivate productive employees and attract top talent, those who constantly seek growth and refuse to stagnate. If you can create an environment that rewards this, I wager that you will make more money.
ccollins··on Ask HN: What to do about a boring job ?
Sure, apply to Airbnb: http://www.airbnb.com/jobs

Seriously though, stop making excuses for why you cannot switch jobs and start doing what makes you happy.

ccollins··on Airbnb has 20 job openings
We are interested in both recent grads and veterans, as long as you are smart, fun to be around, and passionate about Airbnb. I think a well balanced team should have people with different levels of experience.

Customer Service Jobs can be offsite. Everything else is onsite in SF.
ccollins··on Airbnb has 20 job openings
We will absolutely interview you from out of state if you're willing to relocate. About 1/2 of Airbnb employees moved to SF for the job.
ccollins··on Ask HN: Affiliate Programs
This looks really cool, but I was pretty turned off by lack of pricing details. This is all I could find:

"Cloudomatic(flow) has no sign-up fees, monthly fees, or minimum transaction amounts. We only make money when you make money."

Can you be more specific?

ccollins··on Ask HN: Who's Hiring?
Airbnb is hiring 10+ people right now. In particular, we could use some Front End Engineers (backend knowledge is a big plus). Our team is small and you will have a huge impact on the product.

Email me directly at chris@airbnb.com if you:

1) are nasty with Javascript / CSS / HTML

2) can prove it with existing work on great websites or projects

3) love the idea of Airbnb

ccollins··on Ask HN: Who's hiring?
The engineering positions are definitely in house at Airbnb HQ in San Francisco. However, we accept (and encourage) applicants who are willing to relocate to SF.

ccollins··on Review my startup - shouldget.com
This is a fun idea! Here is a quick design suggestion. The actual voting page (http://shouldget.com/questions/17/votes/new) is the most important page so you should spend some more time on it. The design should guide users along a path. Right now, the description / voting box / comment box are all visually equal (see http://i43.tinypic.com/35bz5gm.jpg). This is bad because users don't know what to do.

Here are the decisions everyone is required to make before voting:

- choose which box to check

- should I visit that external link to apple?

- oh wait, am I expected to explain my vote in this huge text box?

- OK I'm ready, wait a minute, I don't even have to vote. I can just view results.

I think this page should be optimized for gathering a vote. Get rid of all the other distractions. Without votes, none of the other features matter.
