cco··on Gemini 4 Argon
It wasn't that they were out of the running for a few months, it was a year and a half.

That's too long to be so far behind. This release looks like it puts them back in it but if they don't ship anything again for a year plus it's hard to imagine building on top of them and watching the world go by.

As others note, this is most relevant for us here, Google does not need to chase YC developers and the like. They can move more slowly, they have the size to do that. But it does suggest a lot of dysfunction given they have the world at their fingertips and couldn't seem to ship anything for a year.

cco··on U.S. appeals court upholds designation of Anthropic as supply chain risk
Yes, if they are an adversary, the company should have been dissolved and leaders and board in jail.

But this was a bad faith temper tantrum, plain to see for anybody looking.

cco··on What even is an OS now?
Naw, you had the knack.
cco··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
That article, and your quote, doesn't seem to support your pushback.

Of course, if a solar panel is broken, ground up and falls into a canal, it would put some heavy metals into the water.

The risk is basically zero and far lower than any other power generation source. It is a nonsense, bad faith "concern".

cco··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
Sure do! But people die in a few days without potable water, crops are usually more drought resistant.

And yes, I do get the point that if you suggested we build $6B desalination plants to grow lettuce people would balk and say, "That's not worth the money!". We should use less water on crops.

cco··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
No, this is a right wing talking point against solar that isn't based in fact.

And as of the writing of this comment, ~7pm, about 25% of CA's grid is supplied by batteries: https://www.caiso.com/todays-outlook/supply

I was shocked when I saw how much batteries contribute, honestly don't hear about them much but they have scaled a lot in recent years.

cco··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
I would love to see the major cities in California start building desalinization plants.

Every plant built would give us a much needed buffer and in the good times could even let us refill ground water (we'd never do that, I know).

cco··on Turn off and restrict access to Apple Intelligence features on Mac
Even worse, once you're there, you toggle _on_ "Content & Privacy", and then what?

What does the toggle on for "Image creation" mean? Is that now restricted? Or is toggle off mean it is restricted?

cco··on Can we stop with the uptime percentages?
I'm curious what kind of power distribution you work in. I've lived in suburban, rural, and urban places over the years and I've never experienced five 9's of uptime on the grid.

You work in grid/industrial?

cco··on OpenAI's Sam Altman says it would be 'ill-advised' to go public in 2026
The time to go public was about 16 months ago. People are waking up to large bills now, Chinese models are nipping at their heels, public sentiment has turned, money is becoming more expensive.

The market no longer cares about fundamentals, corporate structure, controls etc.

Too slow by my judgment.

cco··on Room 641A
You'll be happy to know that Cloudflare's headquarters is about three blocks away from the very room that this thread is about.
cco··on AirPods 5
My experience is the exact opposite. The new shape fits less well in my ear, hopefully they've chosen the best shape for most people, but the shorter stem provides no third point of contact like the old ones!

The longer stem used to have a better chance at contacting your face for some staying power. The shorter stems don't.

cco··on AirPods 5
Do they? I don't think so. Makes them look stubby and more like a hearing assistive device (not particularly fashionable).

They looked sleeker and more balanced with the longer stem and in the ear more like jewelry.

cco··on AirPods 5
Extend the Stem!!

I have no idea why Apple has made AirPods harder to handle, impaired mic placement, and limited the battery capacity with shorter stems.

The longer stems offered more room for battery, got the mic closer to your mouth, and were so much easier to handle, manipulate etc.

Can't really fathom why they shortened the stem and made it harder for everyone, themselves and users alike.

cco··on Is mathematics about to enter the conservatory?
Yup, big group when it's warmish, marching band. Big group when it's cold, symphonic band.
cco··on Top Pentagon Official Contracted Personal Lawyer to Handle Minerals Deal
Right, which is why I mentioned that the first step is impeach justices or pack it.
cco··on Top Pentagon Official Contracted Personal Lawyer to Handle Minerals Deal
The point is that the state needs to flip enough that Trump would not be in a position to control what the state (the court actually) views as an official act.

If Trump continues to have enough influence in the SCOTUS after he's done being president, then yes, you could imagine they contort any action into an official act. But that'd be a failure of the next government to first establish a less biased SCOTUS (either by packing it or removing existing justices).

cco··on Ask HN: Who is using MCP in production?
Not the poster, but working on this right now.

The current framework that solves this the best right now is FiPA.

Establish identity the same way we always have, AS defines the challenges, the client (voice agent in this case) goes and gets them. OAuth from there!

cco··on Yen weakens past ¥160 per dollar, eroding intervention gains
Defending currency has to have some quip, right? Something like, "The market can remain honest longer than your central bank can stay solvent"?

Always seems to go wrong. Like spraying water on a forest fire with a straw.

cco··on Being kicked out of the tech industry
Biggest thing that jumps out is lack of stability. Almost none of their roles are longer than a year, several under 6 months.

That can be bad luck, but taken as a whole, many recruiters and/or hiring managers are going to pass over this resume.

cco··on I used AWS cognito for a startup. I wouldn't do it again
Pretty much all of them do. Auth0 will be annoying about it but even they will do it

I'm struggling to think of one that's refused in my experience.

cco··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
In 2024 Trump got some of the youth vote, still not a majority. Trump never won Gen X (or at least Millennial) and below.

So the prediction sounds right? The Republicans have burnt the youth vote pretty badly and have never really recovered.

cco··on A look under our trunk: what's in our compute
I'm very open to being wrong about this, but will they actually work in NYC? Waymo requires some grace from other drivers and pedestrians in order to function and I just can't imagine New Yorkers will offer it.

Do you think they will?

cco··on Babies born under sugar rationing grew into adults with lower cancer risk
Babies are around second hand smoke and it was relatively common for very young children to be given cigarettes to curb appetite if no food was available.

I'm not sure if that happened here but these are a few reasons you might see an impact on children.

cco··on OpenAI’s head of ethics leaves less than a year after joining
Probably because they are now, after the most recent tender, post-economic.
cco··on US Military's cyber command unit grapples with cluster of deaths by suicide
Counterpoint, industry cyber security is so generally weak, if there were actually a secret "huge cold cyber war" on-going, we'd see real world impact.

Since we don't, it probably isn't happening.

cco··on Waymo in Dallas
Oh wow! Hadn't checked in awhile, thanks for the update.
cco··on What it means for an API to be RESTful
Yes, I also balked when I originally encountered this pattern at a previous co.

And I think agree with your point, "correct in a wrong way"? Yeah, everything as a POST is wrong, but it is less wrong and more clear to just ignore REST because the assumptions are broken so often it just makes it more complicated.

Just POST everything and make it clear in the URI + bodies what is happening.

cco··on Waymo – Dallas Open to All
I believe they paused freeways everywhere because they drove through some construction (or didn't handle construction zones well).
