cbhl··on Claude partial outage
They don’t even share the reasoning keys between *models in the same model family*.

Opus isn’t even allowed to decrypt thinking blocks from Fable if you switch models mid-conversation.

cbhl··on Show HN: I was tired of opening 2 tabs for every HN link, so I made a userscript
This is cool. Don't want to minimize that.

That said, in case it helps anyone else, my usual flow is to middle-click (by clicking my mouse wheel) both the link and the comments link which opens each in a new background tab (at least in Chrome). Hopefully that's lower-friction than what you were doing with the two tabs.

cbhl··on Kimi K3 Is Competitive with Fable; Kimi K3 and Fable Is SoTA
I really like the idea behind OpenRouter's new auto-beta -- classify by task type, and then just follow what the market is using based on the last 7d. https://openrouter.ai/docs/guides/routing/routers/auto-route...
cbhl··on "No Feigning Surprise"
It still sucks to be on the receiving end of genuine surprise.

I found the most helpful reframing is to replace the words and emotions with ones that encourage learning and question-asking. For example you can try being excited instead of surprised, or say something like, "that's a great question, let's figure it out together."

Going through the Fermi estimation in the xkcd comic Ten Thousand also helped me to be a lot less genuinely surprised when someone didn't know something: https://xkcd.com/1053/

cbhl··on The Birth and Death of JavaScript (2014)
I remember watching Gary Bernhardt give this talk live at the Canadian Undergraduate Software Engineering Conference (CUSEC) back in 2014. PNaCl had just come out the year prior, and Google was using it to cross-compile, run, and sandbox OpenSSH and RDP clients inside of Chrome and ChromeOS, and the Mozilla/Firefox folks counter-proposed asm.js as a response.

At the time I just thought it was funny. Now I find it surprising how much of these ideas ended up sticking around.

cbhl··on Don't just paste the AI at me
> still had to use their human words to prompt the AI

In that case, I would like to know what prompt they used so that I can learn to use the AI tools better.

Like, we've had "let me google that for you" since 2008...

cbhl··on Android CLI: Build Android apps 3x faster using any agent
Looks like the docs start here: https://developer.android.com/tools/agents/android-skills#us...

There's a link to a repo or you can use the CLI tool to init the skills

cbhl··on Lunar Flyby
To be fair they "only" have a 20 Mbps laser uplink from the capsule to Earth, and that's shared between all the systems and uploading images/video.
cbhl··on Apple announces new Mac sales record following MacBook Neo launch
it doesn't give a sense of how much the Neo moves the needle or grows the pie though. Mac and iPad are each 8% of Apple's business. iPhone is 50%.

for Apple to focus on fixing things in macOS again (as opposed to just backporting stuff from their other lines) Mac would need to grow by a lot.

cbhl··on Can you save on LLM tokens using images instead of text?
Shouldn't it be the other way around if the population is increasing? Every minute one is born = 1440 born/day, every minute and a sixteenth ~= 1335 dead/day for a net population increase of 105/day.
cbhl··on AI is making us work more

cbhl··on How to Set $2,455 on Fire
The last time I played with NFTs it was about $50 USD just in processing fees to mint the token; not sure if that has changed since then. So it's not necessarily the case that the author is making a bunch of money off of this project; they might actually be just passing along costs.
cbhl··on Betty Crocker broke recipes by shrinking boxes
Assuming that the boxes are 13.25oz/18.25oz, looks like an updated recipe could be:

- 2 boxes cake mix

- 3 eggs (rounding up from ~2.9 eggs)

- 1/2 cup neutral oil (rounding up from ~0.48c)

YMMV

cbhl··on Yamanot.es: A music box of train station melodies from the JR Yamanote Line
Huh.

https://kaisercougarconnection.com/2784/news/musical-trains-...

My impression is that all of the Yamanote line stations are above ground -- I'd have expected it to be possible to have "one button plays the right sound at each station" if you used a standard phone's GPS to figure out which station you were at.

cbhl··on Connecting M.2 drives to various things (and not doing so)
For what it is worth, M.2 NAS devices with 4-6 slots can be had for ~$210 USD / ~$290 CAD or less: https://www.jeffgeerling.com/blog/2025/mini-nases-marry-nvme...
cbhl··on We keep reinventing CSS, but styling was never the problem
There _was_ an outlet for this during the era of Windows hegemony: the object and embed tags. You had your choice of ActiveX, Java, or Shockwave/Flash in the 90s to write applications that you could then embed in the web browser.

We stopped using these for a variety of reasons: they were difficult to make secure or cross-platform, GMail made building apps in JavaScript fashionable, and the iPhone (which explicitly would not support ActiveX/Java/Flash).

cbhl··on US to require up to $15K bond from visitors in new visa trial
FWIW, I was able to get the page to load. Here is the announcement in the Federal Register that the article links to:

https://federalregister.gov/d/2025-14826

cbhl··on Google failed to warn 10M of Turkey earthquake
For context, early 2023 would put the earthquake in question just after the first big layoffs at Google (see their 2023Q2 Earnings Release). And this would have probably been considered "legacy google assistant" stuff, not "new-top-priority AI" stuff.
cbhl··on SFStreets: History of San Francisco place names
Pastmaps might be what you're thinking of? They have an archive of the maps that the United States Geological Survey used to serve as their Historical Topographic Map Collection.
cbhl··on Show HN: ClickStack – Open-source Datadog alternative by ClickHouse and HyperDX
Looks like it is pointing there now; old link was https://clickhouse.com/use-cases/observability for posterity
cbhl··on Show HN: Clippy – 90s UI for local LLMs
To move clippy you want to drag the piece of paper on which clippy sits -- clicking clippy himself will hide and show the chat window.
cbhl··on Trump temporarily drops tariffs to 10% for most countries
That doesn't stop people from trying -- according to Yahoo Finance, FXI (iShares China Large-Cap ETF) was one of the most-traded (by volume) ETFs yesterday.
cbhl··on Tesla Solar Sales Declined for 4 Qtrs. Then Tesla Stopped Publishing the Numbers
You should look closely at solar rate plans and interconnection fees in your area. If you're hoping to save money with solar, it's possible that you never recoup the initial investment because of the way the newer rate plans are structured (esp. for PG&E).

In the bay area, it might be cheaper to opt into 100% renewable rate plans from CleanPowerSF or Peninsula Clean Energy. (Silicon Valley Power is 100% renewable by default, IIRC.)

cbhl··on How Servo Motors Work
If I recall correctly these pages are useful for teachers and students, and Jameco has relatively high-touch education sales (for example, their kitting program: https://www.jameco.com/Jameco/workshop/education-center/educ...).

I want to say that I remember seeing this page in high school in the late 00s, although the Internet Archive only seems to go back to 2012 for this exact URL.

cbhl··on 7.7 magnitude earthquake hits Southeast Asia, affecting Myanmar and Thailand
It's worth noting that the scale of the graph above it has a _logrithmic_ scale so I do think it is actually 6% to 70%.

That page is estimating fatalities of 10k to 100k people and economic losses of 10B to 100B USD.

(For context: Myanmar GDP is about 67B USD, according to Wolfram Alpha.)

cbhl··on Closing the Chapter on OpenH264
VP8 should be required by the base WebRTC spec, but some devices only have hardware acceleration for H.264 so you should test the actual performance before changing codecs. Also consider using VP9 / AV1 if you know all the devices in a call support it and are fast enough to encode/decode it.

cbhl··on Twitch limiting uploads to 100 hours, deleting the rest starting April 19th
On Twitch, Past Broadcasts (VODs) are already deleted after 60 days.

If you see a video-on-demand that is older than that, then that is an “upload” and not a “VOD” and thus is in-scope.

cbhl··on Microsoft removes Windows11 24H2 official support on 8th 9th 10th Gen Intel CPUs
Hmm, I wonder if they're doing this so they can drop some code for Spectre/Meltdown mitigations? If memory serves the fix was somewhere around the 10th-11th gen for Intel.
cbhl··on Launch HN: A0.dev (YC W25) – React Native App Generator
Personally, I'd love to see you optimize for people who start and iterate upon an app from a mobile device and preview/use the app on the same device. Since the messages are just English text, the extra presses to type curly/square braces don't constrain you on mobile. Sometimes I get writer's block at my computer in a way that I don't get on my phone.

In particular, I'd hide/disable the sign-in-with-Google pop-up on phone-size screens (it takes a third of the screen for me), and make sure that CSS/styling makes everything fit on the code and preview screens on a phone, even in mWeb.

cbhl··on FDA Approves drug to treat pain without opioid effects
My impression is that the "indistinguishable from placebo" is only in reference to a study on people with Sciatica, but that a different study did show a statistically-significant effect on post-surgical pain.

$465 USD for a 15-day supply definitely pricey -- but options for people who weren't well-served by Purdue Pharma / OxyContin seem good, especially if the mechanism of action is different.
