cbdhsjshs··on Consider the Shipwreck: Ten Books on Maritime Disasters and Ecological Collapse
There's a fantastic public domain audio book of it available for free

cbdhsjshs··on Decline in teen drug use continues, surprising experts
wowowowow

Ketamine too. Mine comes in the mail from doctor that's conducting a 'safery trial'. They've never asked for feedback from me, and have never pushed back on me requesting a higher dosage.

> Pre-antidepressants my life was fantastic on paper: stable job, close friends, good family, strong relationship, perfect health

I had the same. Post-SSRIs I have none of those things, and am surprised that I'm still alive.

When I asked my shrink 'why zoloft?' the only reason was 'got to start somewhere'. I wish we had evidence-based psychiatry, but instead we have 'throw shit at the wall' psychiatry.

You're expecting cattle not to act like cattle.

We all are cattle to institutions. Maybe you're someone that fact-checks the FDA's science, but do you also fact-check the Dept of Ed's pedagogy, or the federal reserve's fiscal policy?

We need strong institutions that act in the interests of the average citizen. You're right that we don't have that now, but fixing broken institutions is more realistic than everyone becoming genius polymaths with infinite free time for research.

Cafelat Robot

Nothing but metal and silicone.

Why should the average consumer be concerned about plastic? Plastic food packaging has been the norm my whole life.

You're asking a consumer to do what a regulatory institution should do.

cbdhsjshs··on Commercial tea bags release microplastics, entering human cells
'Plastic' is a loaded term. It includes lots of different types of platic, as well as intentional (plasticizers) and unintentional (residue in recycled plastic) additives to it. Some of the formulations are fairly new, some have been in use for a long time.

The amount of exposure has also changed. Some bakelite knobs on your armoir aren't a big deal. Sleeping with a 'fleece' blanket and inhaling polypropylene all night every night may not be fine.

Personally, I don't have confidence in being able to be an informed consumer of plastics, and it's easier to just minimize platic use in general without trying to decide what's dangerous and what's ok.

cbdhsjshs··on Show HN: Demo of my web game about social persuasion
The timer is what gets me anxious.

I've never felt quite like that playing a video game, this is a whole new experience. I'm not sure I'd even call it a game. Well done.

cbdhsjshs··on Why Companies Overspend on Recruiting and Underspend on Retention
The pain of job searching varies. The more competent you are, the more opportunities fall out of sky (recruiters and personal network). The more underpaid you are, the better those opportunities look.

If it's hard to find a job, then, well, yeah, you should expect a mediocre and stagnant salary.

cbdhsjshs··on Waymo will bring autonomous vehicles to Tokyo
I'll be a self-driving believer when Waymo brings autonomous vehicles to New Delhi.

edit - This wasn't ment as disparaging, but perhaps it came across that way. The traffic situation in New Delhi is NUTS. I wouldn't trust myself to drive there, a local driver is a requirement and not a convenience. Crossing major streets as a pedestrian is hard enough, they key is to make eye contact with the driver about to run you over and exchange your intentions through microexpressions. Repeat that 30 times until you reach the other side of the road. Viewing a major intersection from above is like viewing two schools of fish seemlessly swiming through each other. And some of those fish are animal-drawn carts.

I'm in awe of the traffic situation on the subcontinent (as well as many other Indian things - like the word prepone!).

cbdhsjshs··on Luigi Mangione indicted on terrorism charges
Seems like a reasonable move for the prosecution. To defend against terrorism charges he'd need to admit to a non-political motive. I bet they'll get a plea deal for murder w/o terrorism.

I'm hoping for a big public trial, but I don't expect it because 'the man' doesn't want that. Mangione will negotiate a super lax plea deal that avoids a trial.

cbdhsjshs··on Making unsafe Rust a little safer
Formal verification doesn't mean shit when a cosmic ray bitflips your program counter.

Safety critical systems need to fail safely, because they will fail. Detecting unexpected execution should halt the system and revert it back to a known state (e.g. cycle power).

cbdhsjshs··on A Decade Without a Drink
Thank you for sharing, you're words are inspirational. I need pushes like that to get me to try AA.

I struggle with marijuana addiction (well, disassociate addiction and MJ is my goto) and I have a huge amount of respect for folks that made it through addictions to hard drugs (I very much consider alcohol a hard drug). You make my plight seem manageable.

Tangentially - 'Infinite Jest' is an amazing portrail of addiction and mental health issues.

cbdhsjshs··on Chatbot hinted a kid should kill his parents over screen time limits: lawsuit
I had a real shrink confidently tell me to divorce my wife.

Can I hold them accountable?
