"Man is out of nature and hopelessly in it; he is dual, up in the stars and yet housed in a heart-pumping, breath-gasping body that once belonged to a fish and still carries the gill-marks to prove it. His body is a material fleshy casing that is alien to him in many ways - the strangest and most repugnant way being that it aches and bleeds and will decay and die. Man is literally split in two: he has an awareness of his own splendid uniqueness in that he sticks out of nature with a towering majesty, and yet he goes back into the ground a few feet in order blindly and dumbly to rot and disappear forever."

causasui··on Killed by Apple
I don't know what it would take to replace my iPhone SE 3. I can't come to terms with the losing the home button and the fingerprint scan auth.
causasui··on iPhone Air
Totally agree. Apply can pry my iPhone SE 3 from my cold dead hands.

The perfect form factor. Touch ID instead of Face ID. It's the absolute pinnacle of the iPhone models, based on the iPhone 6.

I don't understand why I can't just have this same phone with a slightly better camera. That's all I want.

I read for about 30-60 minutes in the sun before the UV gets too high.

Started this ritual a few years back and I couldn't imagine not doing it now.

This response to the point made by the person to whom you're responding is the philosophical equivalent of plugging your ears and going "la la la can't hear you".

What else would you be able to justify using this platitude?

They're called "knockers"; generally the score threshold for a free game or "replay" isn't hard-coded but is instead based on the grand champion score, so depending on location they can very from very low to very high.

causasui··on Approximately Half of Total Protein Intake by Adults Must Be Animal-Based
A package of tofu costs $1.99, which is enough for a meal for 2. How much does meat cost you these days? This trope is so tired.
causasui··on Most of the world’s grain is not eaten by humans
People suffering from poor health because of a shitty diet is not a uniquely vegan phenomenon. Heart disease kills more people in the US than anything else and a poor diet plays a massive role in that. Talk about a straw. man.
causasui··on Most of the world’s grain is not eaten by humans
None of those are straw men; I've heard every single one, including one of my favorites "cow overpopulation" from you "cheese goddess" specifically.

The same way plenty of farm animals are supplemented with b12 for later human consumption, it's mindlessly easy to get the adequate amount of b12 in a vegan diet. Tons of vegan food come fortified, and if not, a 1000mg supplement once a week couldn't be simpler.

Both the American Dietetic Association[0] and British Dietetic Association[1] confirm that a well-planned vegan diet is healthy for all stages of life.

_My_ bingo card says: someone whose entire life and identity has been in animal agriculture takes personal umbrage to the notion that their lifestyle is immoral and destroying the planet.

causasui··on Basement Fertility
If you trace this thread backwards to its root (by essentially responding to every answer with "so what?"), you end up with the question "would it a 'bad thing' if humanity were to become extinct?"

Anecdotally, the vast majority of people I've met - from all walks of life and religious/political leanings - will answer this question with an unthinking "yes, of course that's bad".

I've been curious lately why this is. From the standpoint of Christianity, isn't the end goal rapture followed by total extinction anyway? From the standpoint of agnosticism/atheism, wouldn't an extinction mean the end of human suffering?

Why are we as a species so afraid of not being able to sustain ourselves through a constant churning of new births? Is it just our monkey brain ultimately calling the shots?

causasui··on Historic fertilizer crunch threatens food security
Slashing the throats of 55 billion animals every year after only a fraction of their natural lifespan is a very interesting definition of "thriving".
causasui··on TSA confirms controversial Amtrak passenger screening program underway
So ridiculous, in fact, that the very next day after I made the original comment, some psycho shot 10 people on a train in NYC.
causasui··on TSA confirms controversial Amtrak passenger screening program underway
As someone who has regularly ridden Amtrak trains the past 15 years, I've actually always been surprised at the lack of passenger possession screening before boarding. Anyone can bring anything they want onto a train, at any time.

A lot of the comments here are laughing at the absurdity of a train hijacking, but I think the greater threat is someone or some group of people choosing a packed train as the very soft target it is for a domestic terrorist attack or mass shooting.

To be clear, most places in America are soft targets for people who want to perpetrate mass casualty events. But while generally people can run and hide, there is no where to run and nowhere to hide on a train.

I'm surprised we don't see more of it, being honest. Only a matter of time.

causasui··on Why I'm in the Army Reserve – an explainer for my friends in tech
For sure, speaking for the Navy (though I'm sure the same applies for the other services as well). Cryptologic/electronic/nuclear fields are all known to be cash cows after getting out. Granted, you need to score well on your ASVAB, especially for nuclear fields. But the ASVAB can be studied for and is probably the easiest of all the standardized tests someone that age may face in my experience.
causasui··on Why I'm in the Army Reserve – an explainer for my friends in tech
There's a saying in the Navy I was told from day 1 at the recruiter's office:

Choose your rate, choose your fate.

Your choice can be the difference between getting out after 4-6 years and easily making six figures, or struggling to find employment at $35k. Not to mention your lifestyle while in and other side effects of your service like PTSD.

> I urge everyone to resist the all-or-nothing approach

There is no other moral stance where someone could reasonably say this. Veganism is a moral stance the same way as "racism is bad" and "abusing my spouse is bad" is a moral stance. No one would ever say "I'm trying to limit kicking dogs to just Tuesday-Sunday".

> vegan straight edge kids on Instagram who sneak a chicken nugget when no one's looking.

You're projecting. Veganism is _not_ a diet.

causasui··on Octopuses, crabs and lobsters to be recognised as sentient beings under UK law
"If animals weren't factory farmed they'd just be wild" is a hilarious misrepresentation of the cause and effect of how farmed animals come to be, and I assume you know that and are being disingenuous.

"Vegan propaganda" ok Cheese Goddess. These animals not existing is preferable to the hell they endure on factory farms.

> ... we prioritize saving our children from a burning building in a way that we don't prioritize saving the mice living in the basement of that burning building

The building isn't burning. We don't have to choose between our children and mice.

You can live a full, healthy life while minimizing to as full extent as possible the suffering you directly or indirectly inflict on other sentient creatures.

The argument you present here against your characterization of the OPs point is akin to saying "my kid really loves McNuggets so I don't care about the horror 50 billion chickens suffer in a given year".

Again, the building isn't on fire; you don't have to choose one or the other.

causasui··on Ex-NSA cyberspies reveal how they helped hack foes of UAE (2019)
95% social engineering/phishing, maybe 5% exploits.

Using exploits is complicated, expensive, and risky. In most cases - to quote XKCD - it's cheaper and easier to just hit the victim on the head w/ a proverbial $5 wrench until they cough up their password, e.g.: have them download your "secure messaging app" which is actually just your implant.

From the article:

> To get close to Donaghy, a Raven operative should attempt to “ingratiate himself to the target by espousing similar beliefs,” the cyber-mercenaries wrote. Donaghy would be “unable to resist an overture of this nature,” they believed. Posing as a single human rights activist, Raven operatives emailed Donaghy asking for his help to “bring hope to those who are long suffering,” the email message said. The operative convinced Donaghy to download software he claimed would make messages “difficult to trace.” In reality, the malware allowed the Emiratis to continuously monitor Donaghy’s email account and Internet browsing.

Absolutely it would be. This is a variation on the "big red button" of extinction question.
