catmanjan··on HSBC moves from 65 relational databases into one global MongoDB database
Interesting, what is considered newsql? Postgres?
catmanjan··on Google postpones Android 11 beta
As an outsider the George Floyd seems like every other police murder that the US has, I swear it happens every other year with similar outrage... BAU
catmanjan··on They redesigned PubMed
Do you have any insight into why this is no longer the case?
catmanjan··on Next-generation solar cells pass strict international tests
Do solar panels eventually stop producing any power?

I have some second hand panels that are around 10 years old, I'm sure they are less efficient and I have had to replace diodes etc - but it seems to me that if you have lots of space (as we do in Aus) you could just keep adding new panels without getting rid of old ones

catmanjan··on Ask HN: What startup/technology is on your 'to watch' list?
I look forward to in browser DLL hell /s

I'm cautiously optimistic about blazor, it definitely makes streaming data to the Dom much easier

catmanjan··on Microsoft announces Lists, a new Airtable-like app
Is teams records management compliant? I know it isn't in my country
catmanjan··on I’ve made a conscious effort to stop apologizing for bugs in my code
I see what you're saying, but I think electronics is equally or more complex than software, but over a longer time period

Copper, plastic, other things which I have no authority to talk about, were all complex at one point in time

You do make a good point about scope creep, I wonder if the early days of electronic had a similar problem because nobody knew what they wanted or what was possible?

Very interesting to think about IMO

catmanjan··on I’ve made a conscious effort to stop apologizing for bugs in my code
Its because software is always "new"

Imagine if an electricians invented new types of wires for every job they did

I'm not sure why software is the way it is, maybe it will be more like a trade in a few decades...

catmanjan··on I’ve made a conscious effort to stop apologizing for bugs in my code
I have never heard of a plumber, dentist or electrician apologizing for anything - unless you count court orders...
catmanjan··on Are Ideas Getting Harder to Find?
I think its a case of diminishing returns - yes there is sucky legacy software everywhere, but the ROI was much greater when introducing software in a space where there was none, or the incumbent system hasn't met growing needs.
catmanjan··on Testing Sync at Dropbox
I don't think Dropbox does merge at all does it?

The file object model wouldn't work for merging Word documents and such

catmanjan··on A Message About Vanguard From Our Security and Privacy Teams
Surely the servers enforce the Vanguard requirement
catmanjan··on Ask HN: Has any progress been made on large format E-ink displays?
Could you write a review on it? I've been contemplating getting one for the same purposes but I'd really like to hear some pros and cons before committing
catmanjan··on Zoom meetings aren’t end-to-end encrypted, despite marketing
Does anyone know of a video conferencing system (3++++ participants) that actually does do end-to-end encryption?
catmanjan··on Requirements volatility is the core problem of software engineering
I often hear people use that logic as a reason why software doesn't qualify as engineering
catmanjan··on Creator of YOLO and SSD algorithm stopped CV research due to ethical concerns
CV: computer vision

I had to google

catmanjan··on Why SQLite succeeded as a database (2016)
So store the value as milli-cents? (haha)
catmanjan··on Where Have All the Schematics Gone?
Maybe because they've figured out they're "one and done"?
catmanjan··on Apache Guacamole 1.1.0
I've looked at using this before to provide a "thin client" legacy desktop app - is anyone doing the same with Guacamole? Care to share your experience?
catmanjan··on [dead]

catmanjan··on Test-driven development: A great idea hiding behind a terrible implementation?
You are so right, the laws of nature have been abstracted
catmanjan··on Rules for Intuitive UX
They are two sides to the same coin but they are definitely different - think of an application with a good UI, now imagine if the business rules around doing things in the application were suddenly made convoluted - that's UX

Good UI seems to be a "know it when I see it" but I'm not convinced a good UX exists yet (or even could exist?) otherwise all applications would use the same methodology

catmanjan··on Food is free if you know where to look
how would you feel if someone stole your car? that is private property
catmanjan··on Amazon Is a Monopoly
If he could amazon would be getting a spanking in court right now, I wouldn't be surprised if it were true, but as for evidence...
catmanjan··on The art of interrupting software engineers
Yeah fair enough, I've been lucky and haven't been made to feel that way
catmanjan··on The art of interrupting software engineers
Judging by all the negative responses do most people see themselves as some sort of vigilante programmer in their company?

I'm not a PM but I sympathize with how difficult it is to discern where a project is up to when it comes to software, especially when you can't come up with short enough milestones...

catmanjan··on Problems with the CSS background-image property
Huh, I always thought it was an alt code character...
catmanjan··on An Open Letter to Google and Apple: Stop Hindering Iranian Entrepreneurs
That is straight up racism.
catmanjan··on Avoid Indirection in Code
Even better (IMO), "hasPermissions"

It isn't clear whether the "check" prefix means the function returns based on whether the checking was successful or not.

catmanjan··on Show HN: Fist – Persistent Full Text Search and Indexing Server Written in C
HTTP is so much more convenient at this point, easy to consume by tools, routing, load balancing etc.
