catacombs··on On Using Twitter
> Later on I unfollowed 90% accounts and stuck to those accounts which strictly tweets only about programming, math, history and other such stuffs in robotic manner (I.e. without any hidden agenda or connotations). I unfollowed everyone who have even a slightest chance of tweeting about politics. Also I stopped tweeting and replying to anybody.

This is the best way to use Twitter, especially your decision to not post or reply to anyone.

We're all prone to say something stupid on online, and if we attach our real identities to those statements, like many people on Twitter, someone somewhere will weaponize it. And, if you have enough "clout" on Twitter, something you tweeted yesterday, or a decade ago, can end your career. This is the world we live in.

catacombs··on Command Not Found: Install any command on any operating system
You're finding ads when finding results for a command?
catacombs··on Mac keyboard shortcuts
You're overthinking it. What more do you want from "paste stuff?"
catacombs··on Journalists’ Twitter use shows them talking within smaller bubbles
Has this happened to you?
catacombs··on Ask HN: What's the best online conference you've experienced and why?
The best online conference will always be inferior to an in-person event.
catacombs··on Three Individuals Charged for Alleged Roles in Twitter Hack
I understand what a dupe is. What I don't understand is how my link, which was posted several hours before the other one, was considered a dupe.

You say both tell the same story. Then, in that case, the other link should be the dupe.

catacombs··on Reviewing the worst piece of code ever
> it looked bad for PR.

It's a shame the lengths universities will go just to make sure they look good, even if that includes rehiring problematic employees.

catacombs··on Ask HN: What are the most under-appreciated Editor / IDE features?
Multiple cursors
catacombs··on Ask HN: How are people getting access to GPT-3?
The GPT-3 version is only available to "premium" users, so one will need to shell out some cash to use it in this specific environment.
catacombs··on Ask HN: How are people getting access to GPT-3?
> Do I need to be on some secret list or say something specific to get access?

Pretty much. If you're not somewhat of a who's who in the world of AI and machine learning, you'll need to wait, like the rest of us, for access to GPT-3. And it's unlikely OpenAI will give it out to normal people for free.

catacombs··on 2k pages of Ghislaine Maxwell/Jeffery Epstein unsealed documents
> I hopelessly wanted a service to transform a collection of PDF files into a searchable text database in one pass.

DocumentCloud has the search function. A lot of the files aren't machine-readable, so current resources are limited.

catacombs··on Three Individuals Charged for Alleged Roles in Twitter Hack
How is this a dupe? The other link is late to the news and points to a TV website, while this one goes straight to the DOJ.
catacombs··on Tampa teen accused of being ‘mastermind’ behind Twitter hack
> It's very silly to try to cash in on ill-gotten bitcoin...

What's the alternative? Sit on the coins or use them for purchases?

catacombs··on Ask HN: What is the worst enterprise software you use every day?
Adobe Creative Suite. Absolutely atrocious.
catacombs··on Ask HN: What are you using new programming languages for?
So, for your use, Go is good for back-end web applications, while Rust is good for everything else?
catacombs··on Ask HN: What password manager do you use and why?
I use 1Password, which is free from my work. Otherwise, I'd use Bitwarden.
catacombs··on Ask HN: Recommended Laptops for Linux?
I've had a Thinkpad X220 as my Linux machine for years, and I love it. The computers are cheaper than a Mac and are built to last.
catacombs··on Ask HN: Rust vs. Golang
Go and Rust have different use cases and have different learning curves. The first question you want to ask yourself is, "What do you I want to build?" Go is good for CLI-based programs and server work. Rust is more low-level and can be used to build, say, operating systems. It depends on your goals.

Now, if you don't have any in mind, then I suggest Go because it's easier to learn and you can still be pretty productive in it.

catacombs··on Ask HN: What are some side hustles for Software Developers?
> Places like Nashville, Atlanta, Tampa Bay, and Research Triangle all have lower cost of living than NYC (you could pay the same rent and actually have a yard) and lots of software jobs if you don't want to go remote.

There might be jobs in these areas, but they won't pay NYC- or SF-level salaries.

catacombs··on Ask HN: Who has access to Open AI gpt-3?
I'm curious, too. Are all these tweets of people showing off GPT-3 capabilities those who have access to the OpenAI API?
catacombs··on Ask HN: If you could start your career all over again, what would you change?
It seems like OP is from the U.S., where, unlike the U.K., the education system knee-caps students financially. Hence, if one goes to school in the U.S. taking out loans isn't worth it.
catacombs··on Ask HN: If you could start your career all over again, what would you change?
For what it's worth, you're better off not being saddled by student loan debt.

EDIT: To the downvoters: please explain how graduating with tens of thousands of dollars in debt is beneficial in the long run.

catacombs··on Twitter is at its best when verified accounts can’t tweet
> I wouldn't call it irony.

Correct. It's coincidental.

catacombs··on Suspect is arrested in grisly killing of tech CEO Fahim Saleh
This sounds like something Patrick Bateman, from American Psycho, would do. However, in the book/movie, he doesn't get caught and didn't do this act for financial reasons.
catacombs··on Doordash and Thousands of Other Companies Passively Send Your Data to Facebook
Nailed it.
catacombs··on Twitter is at its best when verified accounts can’t tweet
A bit of irony with you mentioning this as this link received more than 400 points.
catacombs··on Ask HN: Software That Amazes You?
> I am sitting here watching a video of a guy playing Cities Skylines and I am blown away by this software.

Keep in mind it wasn't just one person who developed the game. It took a village.

catacombs··on The AirPods Pro “Rattlegate”
Where, exactly, can one file this request on Apple's website? I doubt something like this is easy to find.
catacombs··on Ask HN: Alternatives to Reddit?
> While I certainly don’t support many of the various subreddits that have been banned, I do think they have a right to speak.

Racism, misogyny, and xenophobia doesn't belong anywhere.

catacombs··on Ask HN: Who are the best journalists/bloggers covering AI/ML?
Major tech publications.
