cat199··on One man’s fight for the right to repair broken MacBooks
Exactly.. i watch youtube for "whatever i'm searching for", which has never been a science video. Cars, computers, music, other random interests sure, but not science.
cat199··on Treasury Calls for Crypto Transfers over $10k to Be Reported to IRS
Depends on what you are buying - relative prices of various goods change over time; many are critical of things like CPI as being a stand in for inflation for exactly this reason

Example:

1970 corvette: $5,192.00 (Coupe), $4,849.00 (Convertible) 2021 corvette: $59,900

    >>> int(10000 \* (59900 / 5192))
    115369
so, using 'a corvette' as the 'basket of goods' has a ~65% higher inflation rate than the inflation calculator, vs for the big mac:

    >>> int(10000 \* (5.66 / .65))
    87076
which is ~24% higher than the 70k you mention.
cat199··on No safe level of alcohol for brain health: observational cohort study [pdf]
Much of the problem with many skunky lagers lacking taste is storing them in bottles that don't block UV (green, for example) for extended periods of time.

Not saying it's exemplary, but freshness is probably a factor sometimes

cat199··on Before the iPhone, I worked on a few games for what were called "feature phones"
There are, "and always have been" commercial emulators for keeping old software running when the original system no longer exists (PDP, VAX, etc)
cat199··on Wormhole Tunnels in Spacetime May Be Possible, New Research Suggests
> Last night I watched this video on loop for a long time,

Sounds like you found a different kind of wormhole :)

cat199··on The Amish as a source of tech-savvy guidance
According (loosely) to the CMM approach, Amish could be thought of as more technologically 'mature', since they have clear policies around evaluating technology according to clear requirements which have been optimized over time, rather than simply chasing trends

cat199··on The 1788 Doctors' Riot
Not in the industry, and these are complex issues, but the AMA is made up of doctors and is also a huge part of how medical professionals are qualified and has heavy influence on how funding for training, etc. is allocated. So while an individual physician may not be 'the problem', blaming the AMA (and so 'physicians') shouldn't be dismissed outright in favor of the other groups you mention, which are also part of the problem
cat199··on Modern Javascript: Everything you missed over the last 10 years (2020)

cat199··on The origin of Covid: Did people or nature open Pandora’s box?
> I thought this was a complete conspiracy theory

It would only be a conspiracy theory if there was intent - plenty of room for accident without making it a conspiracy.

a common eggcorn.

cat199··on Bugs allowed hackers to dox John Deere tractor owners
I sometimes think john deere and harley and to a lesser extent ford/chevy are basically americana cults with merchandizing and machinery sales attached
cat199··on Bugs allowed hackers to dox John Deere tractor owners
> those points are all iffy.

for tractors generally, maybe, but have read many things specifically about john deere being very DRM/anti repair, and a quick google seems to highlight that there are court battles being fought over exactly this right now.

cat199··on Why does trying to break into the NT 3.1 kernel reboot my 486DX4 machine?
yeps.. we had an 8mb 386/33 at around this time, which is why i'm still amazed at my 1991 vaxstation with 80MB and 40Mhz

though in those days it was def. a different class of machine

cat199··on A man is looking for the friends who shipped him overseas in a crate in 1965

cat199··on AWS Lambda Edge changes duration billing granularity from 50ms down to 1ms
> At worst, they just don't lower prices as quickly as Moore's law decreases their costs.

From a financial perspective, isn't this basically raising prices over time?

cat199··on Amazon workers vote against unionizing in Alabama
Not sure what point you are making here. Most of these seem to be segregated unions for AA people that existed in the same places as the corresponding non-AA union run by the same overarching organization (e.g. AFL-CIO, etc).
cat199··on uBlock Origin works best on Firefox
> box would start sounding like a jet engine.

Not sure about the container connection, but Firefox also now has 'about:performance' which is pretty much like 'top for browser tabs'. When things start getting bogged down I can now find the culprit and nuke it.

about:memory is also useful, it allows you to force garbage collection on the browser as a whole.

cat199··on Amazon workers vote against unionizing in Alabama
> America's "Rust Belt" cities all tend to have one thing in common

Not anti union, but these also had high union activity, which some explain as a cause of their 'rustification' as companies moved production elsewhere (like Alabama) to avoid.

cat199··on Why do long options start with two dashes? (2019)
No -

https://pubs.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/009696799/functions/ge...

but no 'getopt_long' (AFAICT).

OpenBSD, just as one example of a true unix-derived system, added it's own getopt_long only in 3.3 release which was 2003, ~17 years after the 1st posix in 1988. This article mentions getopt_long originating ~1990, after 1st posix standard.

cat199··on Why do long options start with two dashes? (2019)
remember seeing this buried in some ifdefs somewhere or in compile output back in the day.. to me finding the origins this is almost or more interesting than the longopt story itself :)
cat199··on A man is looking for the friends who shipped him overseas in a crate in 1965
iirc (only did this a couple of times and that was some time ago), at least by the 80s-90s, you'd call information in the target location long distance. But yes, that wouldn't go deeper than name->number kinds of lookups.
cat199··on CPU-based algorithm trains deep neural nets up to 15 times faster than top GPU
This is literally the same research group, and the paper you link to is referenced in the article as being the predecessor 2020 publication to this announcement of a forthcoming 2021 paper expanding on the 2020 one.

So yes and no - if you are correct and that paper is indeed the first claim (not up on the literature), this one is also the same first claim, or at least, an extension to it

cat199··on First C compiler ported to GCC
speculating, but don't think it's about use case so much as it is about it being a simple way to implement ('C is portable assembly') which probably carried through to our more current notion of this being a 'language level' thing
cat199··on Has humanity reached ‘peak intelligence’?
> It's been a race to the bottom for the attention economy.

Sadly, with the added knock-on effect of making more in-depth sorts of entertainment / mass culture less profitable, further degrading public discourse..

Being entertained by an endless scroll of memes or political cartoons is alot different than reading full news articles or entertainment pieces, but unfortunately there is enough of the former content to 'fill the void' that the second kind has difficulty 'competing'

cat199··on RFC8962: Establishing the Protocol Police
I heard that they did, but the message couldn't be read because their monitors were not 4k+ ultrawide, and their software didn't have unicode emoji support at 64pt size. Plus they had the nerve to be colorblind!
cat199··on Show HN: Simplenetes – I replaced Kubernetes with 17k lines of shell script
> clusters, which could be just 1 node

Despite whatever the k8s crowd misuses the term to be, 1 node is not a cluster. It might be a single node managed using cluster-capable technologies, but it's still not a cluster.
