castratikron··on SpaceX delivers 3rd batch of Starlink satellites in two weeks
Seems like there's an opportunity to produce an open-source SpaceX compatible antenna that someone could build themselves. I wonder if at some point SpaceX could allow this on their network?

I have a pair of those. I really like them except that they don't quite fit my ears and wearing them for more than a couple hours causes some soreness. If it weren't for that I'd probably wear them all the time. So, maybe that ended up saving me in the end.
castratikron··on Green hackers around the world, let’s destroy Bitcoin
The author misses the point. The root of the problem is that electricity is not carbon free. What the electricity is used for is irrelevant. What the author suggests would be similar to saying, "let's stop climate change by minimizing our driving instead of transitioning to electric transport."

The Semi charger will probably be in the megawatt range on account of the larger battery. What will it take to power a truck stop with 100 chargers? Nuclear reactor maybe?

castratikron··on Electric vehicles close to ‘tipping point’ of mass adoption
Seems like this could be solved if the chargers were networked and programmed with a set group charge limit. If you are a charger, and you're the only charger actively charging, you get 100% of the limit; two chargers get 50% of the limit; three chargers get 33% of the limit, etc.
castratikron··on When parties reverse their stance, supporters immediately switch their opinions
Something I've been trying to understand lately is Republicans' view of "Big Tech" as the new bogeyman. My impression is that Republicans are generally "business friendly", which can take on forms like a certain Midwest state giving billions in tax cuts for a TV factory to the tune of $200k+/employee, seizing land by eminent domain when necessary. And now only a couple years later you have the same party berating tech CEOs and threatening to regulate or break up Facebook and Twitter. What happened to laissez faire?

With regards to ending foreign conflicts, to me it seems more like a desire to return to America's pre-WWII isolationist position. It might be hard to imagine now, but up until Pearl Harbor there was virtually no desire among Americans to enter "Europe's" war (>90% opposed).

Not just him but rather outrage in general. It's like he was made for social media.
castratikron··on Ad Tech Could Be the Next Internet Bubble
FB shrinks, meaning fewer engineers making six figures, meaning rent goes down and all of those high end apartments are only worth 50% what you told the bank it's worth when you took out the loan to build it. If this happened right after the already low rent from the covid slump it could be big trouble. Question is, is there enough money tied up in this where it would make another 2008-sized problem?

castratikron··on A new release for GNU Octave
I'm hoping the next generation will move off of TI-8x calculators and into things like Octave for grade school use.

There was a point in my education where I had mastered my trusty TI-83; I knew the purpose of every single function and how to use them. But then, I started running into problems in the real world that required more than 32 KB of memory to solve. When I moved to a laptop I had to relearn all of that knowledge again. Haven't touched my TI-83 since.

It would be nice if the tools we learned how to use in school could also be useful in solving our problems after we graduate!

castratikron··on Messengers of hope: two mRNA Covid-19 vaccines herald a new era for vaccinology
There are diseases that you can recover from without developing an immunity; tetanus is an example. The vaccine generates a much greater immune response than the actual disease.
castratikron··on Messengers of hope: two mRNA Covid-19 vaccines herald a new era for vaccinology
I've been wondering the same thing. How big of a computer would you need to accurately simulate an immune system? Or at least accurate enough to cut down on some of the tedious and time consuming work? Could something like this be built today with enough effort? I know nothing about immunology BTW.
castratikron··on New Linux port for the Nintendo 64
Tried with cen64, gets to "Booting kernel" then hangs. Maybe I'll get a flash cart and try it out.
castratikron··on Aliens Likely Annihilated Themselves Through Progress
So there has been some discussion in recent years that plants may be intelligent in the sense that they are able to react to stimuli in their environment and actively adapt. There are a few notable experiments that can be interpreted as demonstrating that plants' actions sometimes go beyond simple reflex and could be interpreted as "remembering" or "planning". However, these interpretations are still in debate.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plant_cognition

Plant life makes up about 99% of the bio mass on this planet. If we can't decide whether the dominant life form on this planet is intelligent, I think that shows that whatever intelligence may exist on other planets or galaxies will probably be so strange that we could be looking right at it and not see it.

castratikron··on I've now played with a Raspberry Pi 400 for a week and here are my conclusions
Weird. So the processor has an eMMC controller but they left that out on the datasheet.
castratikron··on I've now played with a Raspberry Pi 400 for a week and here are my conclusions
I browsed the datasheet [1] for the BCM2711 processor and did not see an eMMC controller on this part. Assuming the SD card is connected by SPI which would explain why it's so slow. Also rules out eMMC.

I would say there's no moral difference between a human operator and a mechanical operator whose behavior is controlled by a human. Configuring the operator to drop calls from a particular area code would be an example in the case you provided.

castratikron··on When remote work doesn't cut it
Social cues aren't lost on me, but I don't miss them. I've found that it's been way easier for me to speak my mind when I don't have an audience looking at me. Huge increase in confidence. I even asked for a promotion a few weeks ago, something I've never had the courage to do in person.

I just hope I don't get too confident and end up in trouble...
