casper345··on The End Is Near for Mobile Apps?
Working with IoT (i.e. Beacon technology) HTML5 and even React Native, nothing beats native code responsiveness. The need for "White label" apps may start going away, but emerging technologies that rely on efficiency and speed should be utilizing mobile app native environment.
casper345··on Ask HN: How to stop my greed for money?
First, get off social media. You seem like you are in the trap of comparing yourself and no matter how much money you got, you will keep comparing yourself. So get of the SM platforms for a while. Keep doing your work but examine how you feel after a week or so.
casper345··on Show HN: Make money interviewing candidates
I was thinking this too as a chicken and egg issue.

My propose solution is having "guildmasters" who somewhat manages each role. Making sure they are not scamming. These people I would know/vet in the beginning as people willing to do this initial work. Also implementing reviews for a vetter so that the vetter is held accountable.

Another solution is having the ability to hire multiple vetters to get multiple vet layers. Still will be cheaper than hiring an agency.

casper345··on Tiny Books Fit in One Hand. Will They Change the Way We Read?
A good reference also might be pocket bibles. Although they are somewhat used, anecdotally I still see more people with the full size "normal" books at church.
casper345··on A single-page app is almost always worse than a multi-page app
> For instance, if you’re building a chat box then there’s really no need to implement your login page in React.

Wrestling with this idea. Been using create react app for most of my projects that arguably do not need it. But the development is so much faster and easier to manage than traditonal html/css webpack

casper345··on Is front-end development having an identity crisis?
We have shifted a focus on the developer comfortability than on the user's. All these new implementations (or libraries fundamentally) biggest selling point is making the developer life easier. Although it may make them more productive, we lose sight on the user needs.
casper345··on Facebook exodus: Nearly half of young users have deleted the app
I wonder what the next form of "social media" there will be
casper345··on Facebook exodus: Nearly half of young users have deleted the app
Deleted my facebook but forgot how many of my other accounts I used facebook as signing up (another eye opener) So I reactivated my facebook to start migrating my accounts just to use my email as auth. Hopefully soon I can delete my facebook
casper345··on How to Find a Million-Dollar, One-Person Business Idea
A stockbroker calls 10,000 people. He tells 5,000 that the stock is going to go up, and the other 5,000 that it is going down. The next day the stock goes up. He then calls the 5,000 people who he told the stock would go up, he tells 2,500 that the stock goes up and the other half it will go down. Stock goes down next day.. . rinse, repeat. Until it gets down to 100 people and now those 100 people believe that stockbroker has 100% success rate.

Problem with these "motivator speakers" is that alot of people are doing thse strategies but alot of it goes with luck and oppurtunity. SO they are not spouting wisdom, just preaching strategies that worked for them in their time.

casper345··on Top lawyers beaten by legal AI
"Top mathematicians were beaten by calculator AI that computes equations faster"
casper345··on Why almost everyone was wrong about Tesla’s cash flow situation
Heard a great quote (gonna butcher it) - "What people say or what competition is doing at the end of the day does not matter - if the forces allow, it will allow".
casper345··on The Digital Gap Between Rich and Poor Kids Is Not What Was Expected
Technology in schools always takes a lot of adjustment to enhance learning than make another distraction. Technology should be seen as just the medium, not the ends to education
casper345··on What we lose by reading 100,000 words every day
Also might just be easier and more convenient to read the articles online. We have laptops, phones, tablets, emails as mediums to read "100,000" words but a novel (preferably on canvas) is physical and limited by nature. I can read hacker news at work but I cannot just whip out Oliver Twist when I'm 'sneaking' a break.
casper345··on Python is becoming the world’s most popular programming language
Question: How is python on more mechanical systems, like robotics in such? Will we see a migration there besides web env?
casper345··on Ask HN: Is 23andMe DNA testing worth it?
They have my DNA in their system. A lot of rich information for companies to seel that to with that, no?
casper345··on Why I’m Worried About Google
I have an understanding on both sides. To keep our privacy is something we initially feel should be our decisions. However, besides companies buying Google services, most individuals do not pay for Google services. Chrome, Gmail, Google search, are monetarily free for us. We are paying with our information. If you use the service then you are saying yes to allow companies to enact these dark patterns, ethics aside. One could argue if the internet is a right, but that's another day

Although it would be helpful for some if Google laid it out transparently to individuals who do not have the technical slop to understand what they are "losing"

casper345··on The Costs of Programming Language Fragmentation
Points to the author, just because one can create doesn't mean one should. Should there not be more intentional thought in creating and creations ramifications? "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds."
casper345··on Ask HN: Do you regret becoming a programmer?
Also my question is not about improving oneself in programming. Today there is alot of glamourizing of programmer sso would be interested to hear from people on the other end.aka I'm looking for subjectivity
casper345··on Ask HN: Do you regret becoming a programmer?
Well to be fair, I am not really interested in non programmers since the question is focused on individuals who considered themselves programmers and their reflection on that.
casper345··on Ask HN: Do you regret becoming a programmer?
As In programming has helped your mind think in different ways, but the profession is no longer appealing to you?
casper345··on Go West
Originally from Bay Area, went to school, but so glad moved to a small city in Texas. Good to explore other opportunities and everywhere people need programmers
casper345··on Ask HN: What was the best decision you made in your career?
Deciding to go to a city like San antonio, Texas for programming (I am from California) than going to congested places like NY, Boston, Silicon Valley.
casper345··on Zoho.com CEO says domain with 40M users suspended for abuse complaint
ZOHO went down and hundreds of thousands of business went down...feel like this should be a bigger warning of how dependent we are to handful of companies?
casper345··on The South African mountains older than continents
"what are men to rocks and mountains"
casper345··on Becoming a Better Software Developer: A Handbook on Personal Performance
Thank you for this - Can you clarify why OO derailed us? But if that explanation might be a long story haha so what was before OO, so I can do my own research
casper345··on Becoming a Better Software Developer: A Handbook on Personal Performance
Was hoping for more concrete insights. Things only developers with decades of experience would know.
casper345··on Is “data scientist” the new “programmer”?
> How did applications get so bloated and therefore boring to look at?

I love reading code at this level. 1. You get to see into the mind of the programmer and learn new techniques. 2. Boring?! 3. A good text editor makes it attractive to look at for hours :)

casper345··on The US has spent $1.5 trillion on war since Sept 11 attacks
Oh interesting, did not know about Santos-Dumont. Probably my Amercian bias and history in school of just knowing the Weight Brothers.
casper345··on Ask HN: What was the one book that you read and it actually changed your life?
The Kite Runner - Khaled Hosseini
casper345··on The US has spent $1.5 trillion on war since Sept 11 attacks
> Don't need war for R&D. R&D money was going to be spent regardless.

I would say that is an assumption that is not fully true compared to knowing that war R&D has in fact produce technologies adapted in civil society. Reminds me of a false claim that if the Wright Brothers never were the first to have a successful flight, we would still have planes. We could have easily never have had a successful flight -> airplanes. Although negative, we should still give credit to war R&*D
