caro_douglos··on Ask HN: How do you consume noisy financial news?
JL Collins [1] has a great talk at Google I discovered while perusing youtube[2]. He taps into Warren's advice of not watching the markets too closely (mentioned in your second link).

Hella hate. Personally I found grappling with what they were initially difficult but then I finally dug in and watched howto propaganda...great job whoever did that at amazon. It’s the one thing I don’t hate about the company. [1]

It’s a ton easier for on boarding and giving contractors temporary access to resources.

caro_douglos··on Working for a startup makes less sense
This. I would even go so far as to say that if you can’t get the founder salaries up to market rate based on MRR you should either bootstrap some more if you’re really into the IP or product...or close the place down before you hire someone under what they should be paid.

FYI ^

Maybe it's good that someone in marketing world point out JQ one more time. My aliases are littered with magical jq stuff.

alias whatscomplaining='sudo journalctl -fxe -o json | jq "{ timestamp: .__REALTIME_TIMESTAMP, commandline: ._CMDLINE, message: .MESSAGE }"'

caro_douglos··on Show HN: CalmJobs.io – Work with companies who values work-life balance
It’s relevant in the sense that job posts that tout “part time” might not care about your work life balance after all. Being a part time software engineer sounds great maybe it would lead to less burnout.
caro_douglos··on Show HN: CalmJobs.io – Work with companies who values work-life balance
Part time in a field like retail (for a multinational) or large US brand does not have any flexibility. They will often go out of their way ensure you do not get overtime while simultaneously disrespecting your time outside of the job.
caro_douglos··on Over 100 PBS local stations start streaming on YouTube TV
I happened to watch an episode when visiting some family and even though the characters were slightly different it did feel like it was touching on EQ more than IQ skills.

That being said the count is still the count and Chappelle's skit [1] is still spot on.

caro_douglos··on You might literally be buying trash on Amazon
If only sears didn’t charge 3rd party merchants way more than amazon to list items. RIP
caro_douglos··on The Lesson to Unlearn
Recently I have been charged with helping someone setup paperwork for their startup. I am not a lawyer so I simply have the paperwork, standard agreements, and general company structure that any lawyer would (I assume) give away for free. Avodocs has pretty much all that paperwork covered, carta has the captable, and pilot has the books under wrap. After reading this article I'm somewhat torn about mentioning things like c corps and filing in Delaware to my friend since in the end it really is only the product that matters. Corporate structure steeped in law/history is a hackable test which everyone must take...resulting in either getting bitten or by running to attorneys and tax advisors (because they were bitten in the past).

TLDR opinion. The hackable c corp structure Y pushes has payed off well for Ycombinator yet it is the very thing that can distract from building a good product.

Then again I'm sure someone might make the claim that c corps are also a way to easily share equity with your employees.

I’ve wanted to work at flex port for awhile and always wondered if they offered this...freight has so many things to learn in terms of law, economics, and supply chain....not to mention dealing with things at sea..
caro_douglos··on The ominous opacity of the AWS bill – a cautionary tale
I’ve wondered if the reasoning behind poor ML usage info has to do with the api endpoints being so profitable that notion of even looking at the code and implementing more straight forward metrics might kill the golden goose.
caro_douglos··on Launch HN: Vouch (YC S19) – Business Insurance for Startups
Thanks for expanding. Brokers that work in brick and mortar have their place. Based on reading about your company I would make the pitch that the customer wouldn’t hire a defense attorney to incorporate your company (though you could and not that they wouldn’t do a good job) and likewise you wouldn’t hire silicon legal to defend you in a criminal trial. The last thing you want would be a broker or ultimately an underwriter that is unfamiliar with your business model that fights tooth and nail with you on simple stuff that the Hartford would take care of in a heartbeat.

caro_douglos··on Raspberry Pi 4 WiFi stops working at 2560 x 1440 screen resolution
It was ultimately with the router. Specifically With NAT and 2.4 band. 5g kept going just fine. After looking at the manufacturers website the solution was to either buy a new router or disable port mapping.
caro_douglos··on Raspberry Pi 4 WiFi stops working at 2560 x 1440 screen resolution
Sounds like a turkey day mystery!

You were missing a router swap on your list.

While it might seem a bit overkill try restarting your router’s WiFi to see if it magically works. I had a war with a pi zero W not that long ago...turns out the 2 band wireless would just die sometimes. Turned out to be an issue with the router ️

caro_douglos··on Convert a physical chessboard into a digital one
It slows down your initial reaction to a move.

1) your opponent moves

2) opponent hits clock

3) they go to write down the move

4) you write down the move

5) you move

6) hit clock

7) write down your move

8) opponent writes down your move

...

Imagine if this were done in poker!

When it comes to studying for an upcoming tournament match you will know who your opponent is so you have the ability to study up on their previous play. Maybe they play a certain style against your mainline go-to that you can exploit.

Edit: grammar/spacing

caro_douglos··on Ask HN: What's the most valuable thing you can learn in an hour?
I had a conversation with a friend who is an attorney and they blew me away with their off the cuff typing speed. It ended up inspiring me to get better at something I did all day....for someone who’s not sure where to start I’d start with gtypist typespeed or speedpad. Don’t forget about mavis beacon!

caro_douglos··on Amazon’s quest for more, cheaper products has resulted in a flea market of fakes
The one that contacts you and wants to “help you sell more”.

The point is that each of these types of teams has no insight into the underlying structure of how Amazon actually works. As a business you are forced to buy into the racket in the hopes that you are not accused of being an IP infringer...try hiring a decent law firm to help you get out of this debacle....oh wait they all can’t help because they work for Amazon already.

caro_douglos··on Amazon’s quest for more, cheaper products has resulted in a flea market of fakes
I've sat in on calls with Amazon Employees where they tell you to do exactly this to boost sales.......and then deny that they ever did it when you are contacted by the IP rights holder.

caro_douglos··on Amazon’s quest for more, cheaper products has resulted in a flea market of fakes
As an industry electronic components are not all that different from knock off brands of LVMH products. Is it surprising to see a "customer" jump at the opportunity to score a "steal" on a new set of kicks which might look like the real deal but are certainly not. As slaves to the notion that everything must show up the next day we as consumers have decided that we should not pay for the shipping and are OK with whatever we get...Do you think Amazon makes more money working with Texas instruments or with the sellers that are hoping to make it big by boosting their reviews?

caro_douglos··on Mark Twain’s Quest to Bring Affordable Watches to the Masses
This depends on the tier you decide to go with. IMO cheap glasses and cheap watches have similar pricing tactics...high end is a delicate dance between get what you pay for and status. Also keep in mind that you are paying for the opportunity / lucky chance of repair when the item is busted.
