"I'm feeling lucky"? Pffft. They'd better be, trying to make a name in this space against Excite and Lycos and Yahoo.

When you say the matching is far from perfect, is that at your end or on the part of the echoprint / echonest code? You made tweaks because you found issues with what they were doing....?
caractacus··on Newest version of uTorrent has Bitcoin mining offer during install
Hahahaha. No. No, it doesn't. It once agreed to remove content when told (ie, adhere to the DMCA) many many many years ago (ten? more?) when it had a search portal on its own web site but if you really believe that bittorrent has some kind of direct line to the MPAA to report users, you are very deluded.

(200m unique monthly users) * (even only a teeny percent of users accepting these offers) = considerable money for BitTorrent Inc.

There's a Tesco Express near me which is small but was okay until they redesigned it last year and did what I term a WHSmiths: put in shelves almost to the ceiling, thinned the aisles, packed in as much content as possible. It obviously allows more product but makes the shopping experience terrible when there are more than a few people in the store. I avoid it unless there's something on heavy discount that worth's picking up.
caractacus··on Kino by Haruki Murakami
IQ84 turned me off Murakami for a long time. Count how many times he recounts the same incident in almost the same words (narrator, mother). Count how many times he mentions breasts and the shapes of them (it's likely the same number of times he mentions any female). I read book one and two and realised at the end of it that I couldn't bear to buy the third book just to discover what happens to the protagonists.

They also refused to change their name. The founder wouldn't rebrand. They had a decent chance, if you think about it: storage know-how, a bunch of servers, some good techies, and - which could have been the killer - a Swiss location with Swiss data privacy laws, right in the Snowden era. Forget Dropbox and google drive and amazon with the NSA tapping into them here and wherever. Could have been a great selling point. But the owner couldn't face 'swissshare' or 'swissbox' or something else... had to keep Rapidshare with all that implied.

caractacus··on Why Kim Dotcom hasn’t been extradited 3 years after the US smashed Megaupload
1. Because he had a lot of money to spend on lawyers

2. Because there are some fundamental issues - slowly getting cleared - on issues of search, procedure, etc

3. Because the legal system can take a bloody long time to achieve anything

caractacus··on BitCannon – A torrent index archiving, browsing, and backup tool
Okay, so installed and added today's KAT db in.

A few initial thoughts: 1. It took 2-3 hours to add in the whole KAT db. No problems in parsing the data from what I could tell, but a long time to do it. Maybe that's my machine but it's not ridiculously slow. I'm not going to be adding in the bitsnoop db of 24m+ torrents at this rate.

2. Pulling up 'browse' takes 45-50s just with the KAT stuff indexed and it takes that long every time I click on browse. Could you add some kind of caching to that page?

3. There's no paging. It loads a page of results and no more.

4. Search is very very fast. Would be nice to be able to specific the category when searching.

The main thing it's missing that makes other sites good is all the ratings, seed/leech data, comments, meta data. I wondered, maybe you could do a large scrape of KAT every now and again that grabs all of that and provide it to people as a kick-start to their database....? Then they only need grab updated files every day or something.

caractacus··on BitCannon – A torrent index archiving, browsing, and backup tool
BitSnoop has a db of 24m+ torrents available, though it's (i) badly categorised and (ii) offline atm.

http://bitsnoop.com/api.html

So if I installed this, I would (for the moment) currently need to grab the dump from KAT or Demonoid or wherever, extract it, and add it to the database...? How does it deal with duplicates from the same site - or the same infohash found on different sites?

caractacus··on Why we prefer founding CEOs (2010)
It's not just lazy, it's plain wrong.

"Technical" refers to industry, machines, science. Sticking "ology" on the end means the study of that. There is no value judgement about it implying better or worse.

There's a pretty awful explanation here that references the same 'better' phrase (http://becocapital.tumblr.com/post/64275006972/did-you-know-...):

The word technology comes from two Greek words, transliterated techne and logos. Techne means art, skill, craft, or the way, manner, or means by which a thing is gained. Logos means word, the utterance by which inward thought is expressed, a saying, or an expression. So, literally, technology means words or discourse about the way things are gained.

... but again, no implication at all that craft or skill implies better. I think there is a fundamental confusion somewhere along the way between 'technology' and 'innovation' which does imply better or improved. Google for Horowitz and the 'better way of doing things' and you find he's using it on a regular basis. Maybe it makes him feel better about things?

caractacus··on 'Silk Road Reloaded' Just Launched on a Network More Secret Than Tor
Quite. It's been around for many years but I don't think it ever got the crypto attention that Tor has received, mostly because it was (and is) very little used. A few Russian sites toyed with using it when they started blocking sites for piracy over there but it was never adopted - too slow, not user friendlh enough.

caractacus··on Sony Reveals an Even Bigger Attack on the Internet – the MPAA Is Behind It
> Even then, they already had the systems in place for this censorship precisely due to secret lobbying deals and strong-arming by the government (who knew that any legislation they brought forward would quickly run up against lots of opposition both politically and legally) - see the situation with the IWF and the porn-blocking stuff.

This isn't right. The Digital Economy Act said 'Ofcom can go think about whether site blocking would work'. Ofcom took forever and ever and still hasn't reported back. In the meantime, the music industry took action under the existing copyright act (from 1997) to try and block some sites. The ISPs opposed the action. The court granted it. After a few of these, the government said 'great! you don't need the DEA to block sites then so we'll abandon that'. There was no secret lobbying to get sites blocked - the legislation was already there and in place.

caractacus··on Candy Japan 2014 Year in Review
Are there Costco-like outlets in Japan? Places that sell in bulk at a lower cost?

Just signed up for a trial. Really looking forward to it. A couple of things: 1. The sign up process is SO EASY. Fantastic - wish other sites would make it so simple. Choose your level of service, pay, done. Fast and quick.

2. Email newsletter signup? Didn't notice one. Would be a great way to keep people who pay for gift subscriptions in the loop.

3. Provide a custom email for people who have bought a gift subscription. At the moment, it's just the link. If you provided a page or sample email that was like 'Hey, I've bought you a subscription to Candy Japan!!!! Here's what happens... etc etc' - I think it would make the impact of the gift greater.
