captaincaveman··on Panic at the Job Market
Thinking you can figure out someone in 5 minutes makes you a no hire from me ;)
captaincaveman··on Story points are pointless, measure queues
Yeah, and thats fine, there is literally no need to have them consistent between teams.
captaincaveman··on New JavaScript Set Methods
Agree, a main benefit of using these would be performance gains.
captaincaveman··on Why we no longer use LangChain for building our AI agents
I think LangChain basically tried to do a land grab, insert itself between developers and LLM's. But it didn't add significant value and seemed to dress it up by adding abstractions that didn't really make sense. It was that abstraction gobbledygook smell that made me cautious.
captaincaveman··on ARC Prize – a $1M+ competition towards open AGI progress
When we see what we think is a cat, what we have categorised as a cat, I don't think we are looking at it from each angle and going, cat, cat, cat. I think there is an aspect of something like the 'free-energy principle' that is required to trigger off a re-assessment. So while visually we may receive 20fps of cat images, it's mostly discarded unless there is some novelty that challenges expectation.
captaincaveman··on ARC Prize – a $1M+ competition towards open AGI progress
I don't think its analogous, I don't think we see a cat and our brain have it frame by frame adjust our synaptic weights (or whatever brains do). The whole premise of natural brains being able to learn by static images or disjointed modalities is a very clunky reductionist engineered approach we have taken.
captaincaveman··on ARC Prize – a $1M+ competition towards open AGI progress
I'd say that was more like a single instance, one interaction with a thing.
captaincaveman··on Silicon Valley's best kept secret: Founder liquidity
Mostly someone has a Phd and convinced people to give them money to 'change the world', then need someone who has actually built things beyond a script in a python notebook.
captaincaveman··on Ask HN: What are your personal red flags when you're interviewing at a company?
Pompousness and self importance, we all get interviewed at some point don't power trip, it should be a humble two way conversation.
captaincaveman··on Ask HN: Do you think AI Agents are overhyped?
I think there is potential, but at the moment it's

1. RAG your data 2. Magic 3. Agent business logic 4. $$$

where step 2 is very unclear.

Also agent architecture what is it? A basic FSM which in essence is a bunch of business logic/rules with LLM API calls, how do you make this reliable for transactions.

I've yet to see a decent example of a business process replaced which isn't a question answer scenario i.e. call centre type role.

captaincaveman··on Ask HN: How to deal with the AI-pocalypse as a regular guy?
Except (and really not wanting to offend Indians), what we did is import a large number (by percentage of tech jobs) of skilled Indians which drove down the market rate for those jobs, either way it had the 'benefit' of driving down costs.
captaincaveman··on Google releases smart watch for kids
Good luck with that!
captaincaveman··on OpenAI Is 'Exploring' How to Responsibly Generate AI Porn

captaincaveman··on Yes, social media is a cause of the epidemic of teenage mental illness
Little by little is my advice, be at hand but not a crutch, show them what they are missing out on but don't push them to engage, they have to decide they want a better life and to do something about it.
captaincaveman··on Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia will be completed in 2026
Yes, Anarchist were very much a specific thing in that context, not as its used today.
captaincaveman··on Birmingham council's 'equal pay' bankruptcy provided cover for Oracle disaster
PwC and KPMG were appointed to help rectify problems with the system earlier this year, while the council had previously employed EY on the implementation.

I'm sure those three bandits lined their pockets nicely!

captaincaveman··on Birmingham council's 'equal pay' bankruptcy provided cover for Oracle disaster
Probably not, more often than not you get a KPMG/Accenture or some one equally useless.
captaincaveman··on Ask HN: Feeling quite disheartened about job search, any advice?
Where in Europe are you, are you applying to job in your country? Are you applying to jobs where you are a native speaker?
captaincaveman··on Trident missile test fails for a second time in a row
yes it's time for more funding, nothing gets funding better than a burning platform ...
captaincaveman··on Industry veterans get candid on ageism in gaming
Most people working on games have little input to the game dynamics, but sure have a bias for younger people because they can 'relate' to the market, and nothing to do with being more exploitable!
captaincaveman··on The Rise and Fall of GOFAI
Seems to be conflating GOFAI with Cybernetics, they are distinct with Cybernetics being far more aligned with the sub-symbolic approach (McCullock & Pitts for example).
captaincaveman··on Bard is now Gemini, and we’re rolling out a mobile app and Gemini Advanced

captaincaveman··on The Absolute Beginner's Guide to Emacs
It would be great if emacs had a LLM co-pilot, I could have it look at my config (and tell me what I could improve). Also i could ask how to do things in emacs, it would have some knowledge of my setup, even my active modes etc, often I get stuck and not sure what key combo or even command I want (the naming of commands are a bit weird at times).
captaincaveman··on The fastest-growing countries for software development, according to GitHub
I agree with Git being overcomplicated, and the commands being a semantic mess, although they have improved somewhat over the years. I also didn't like how Github became some defacto self promotion thing. However, very few developers now don't use github to some degree in my experience (UK), bearing in mind so many new developers are/were being created each year compared to the past the more seasoned developers are becoming a vastly diminishing percentage.
captaincaveman··on The fastest-growing countries for software development, according to GitHub
Yeah you're unusual, which sector do you work in?
captaincaveman··on US designates more Chinese tech companies as military collaborators
Well if US stops protecting Taiwan, and China invades, that will end that debate. The new debate will be, Taiwan WAS an independent state and now isn't, and some one will come along and "yeah well that was 70 years ago!".

Psychobabble or not, it boils down to how much anyone wants to get involved in a nasty fight to save someone else, which might end up causing more damage to Taiwan even if they do. I don't think this is right but is the world has always operated, not sure anything has changed.

captaincaveman··on US designates more Chinese tech companies as military collaborators
Yes they do, and like I said, think they should be left to get on with things on their own. However they are a break away geopolitical state that was only enabled to do so, by support from US to protect them, if the US hadn't enabled them the CCP would of invaded many many decades ago. You can brush this inconvenient fact under the carpet, but it's not a simple and clear cut as you make out. Both sides taking the extreme stance is why it can't be solved.
captaincaveman··on Launch HN: Univerbal (YC W23) – Language learning with a conversational AI tutor
Very much something I'm interested in.

The problem I have is it jumps straight in at a level that is too high for me, I literally can't answer the basic questions you start with. I need more basic introductions and foundations, perhaps this is only an app I can come too once I've studied to a certain level elsewhere?

captaincaveman··on Launch HN: Univerbal (YC W23) – Language learning with a conversational AI tutor
As someone looking to learn European Portuguese this is a constant pain with most language apps.
