captaincaveman··on Ask HN: Could you share the notes you took on a typical work day?
Depends on what you mean by notes.

1. temporary short term memory aids ... ip address, doodles to help concentrate and picture in your head what someone is talking about, or to stay awake

2. facts, concepts and relations, piecing together knowledge

3. tasks, todo's

4. ... dunno, sure there are more

captaincaveman··on Expats are moving to Portugal
White probably is a factor, but I think its more they are self sufficient, i.e. they either don't need to work or have been drafted in temporarily to fill a skills gap at the behest of a corporation.
captaincaveman··on Expats are moving to Portugal
Indeed the national dish is not to my taste, I'm not even sure what the USA national dish is, however I suspect it probably isn't the best, despite there being very good food available there.

It can be hard to know what to eat and often more importantly where to eat as a tourist, and in Portugal its often (in my experience) the last obvious establishments that are the best (often places you don't even think sell food).

captaincaveman··on A guide to getting started with embedded systems
From my experience in past doing embedded, then web (and now mostly nothing), I noticed how much more accessible open web devs were. Information travelled fast, so it wouldn't surprise me if in the embedded world today still many don't know where the demand/money is.
captaincaveman··on GraphQL Is a Trap?
A good summary, and similar to my own experience.
captaincaveman··on Including “And. And. And. And. And.” in a Google doc causes it to crash
has anyone tried "Or. Or. Or. Or. Or."?
captaincaveman··on Software Engineering at Google (2020) [pdf]
So google wants to kill off the tired old joke now huh!
captaincaveman··on The Machine Learning Job Market
The robots on their site look pretty clunky to me, not to say they aren't doing smart things.
captaincaveman··on The Machine Learning Job Market
So central or eastern Europe ... yeah, thats gonna be tough!
captaincaveman··on CNN+ streaming service is shutting down a month after launching
I did seem to fail as a product though too!
captaincaveman··on Netflix loses subscribers for the first time in 10+ years
All SVOD services are down this quarter, Disney+ arguably hardest hit, root cause is cost of living increases.
captaincaveman··on Ask HN: Which new skills for a data science career?
Python, pandas, pytorch be comfortable with them, and that demonstrates enough. Stick with the python eco system, that's enough tools, you can add ad hoc things on the job, that other stuff is getting more into data engineering and visualising, which is fine but your not looking to be a unicorn of all skills, you just need your first job.
captaincaveman··on Inside the longest Atlassian outage
A dumpster fire of a company that has terrible communication with customers outside of outages as well.
captaincaveman··on A dirty dish by the sink can be a big marriage problem
I'm not saying there shouldn't be flexibility, it's give and take, but there clearly should be some limits. So blanket advice of change what your doing to satisfy all minor complaints isn't great advice in my opinion.
captaincaveman··on A dirty dish by the sink can be a big marriage problem
I don't think it would make her feel loved though, as in her view it was the norm, by putting it away you could say she didn't feel disrespected by him, however, it could also be viewed as it was her having disrespect of him for his behaviour ... we of course can only speculate.
captaincaveman··on A dirty dish by the sink can be a big marriage problem
But I don't think in this case he said there was uneven divide of work. Also he wasn't leaving work for her to do, he did the work just not on her schedule, it was the wife who had the issue of the glass being there until end of day.
captaincaveman··on A dirty dish by the sink can be a big marriage problem
'Change yourself', 'just be yourself', no one can decide what the duck to do!

Do you keep changing yourself to meet their every whim, maybe they should just let it go, it's just a glass?

captaincaveman··on A dirty dish by the sink can be a big marriage problem
hmmm marriages fail after 15 years too, at what point do you declare success?
captaincaveman··on Human brain compresses working memories into low-res ‘summaries’
Which also seems a cornerstone of Fristons Active inference (from the little I understand of it).
captaincaveman··on Verilog Is Weird
Are you even doing it for all your code ... come on be honest ;)
captaincaveman··on Ask HN: Diagnosed with genetic heart disease at 25 – how do I make an impact?
I don't think you need to decide today, I assume you have just recently been diagnosed. Sit with it for a while, carry on with the path your on and if that doesn't feel right in 6 months, a year, 3 years time then you will be in a better position to think what you want to do.

Committing your future today based on this news, is likely to be an over reaction.

captaincaveman··on Lapsus$ hackers leak 37GB of Microsoft's alleged source code
I don't want their compiled code let alone their source code!
captaincaveman··on Kawasaki shows robotic goat with human rider
Why would you show this to the world!
captaincaveman··on Ask HN: What will it take to destroy the ads market?
I think its too early to say if history is repeating, certainly a possibility. Things have changed a lot since 1981, consumers have a wider range of choice for entertainment, and swapping providers is super easy now.

One negative change though is Public Broadcasting Services are being encouraged to be self funding, which may reduce the options for free and ad-free content!

captaincaveman··on Ask HN: What will it take to destroy the ads market?
I certainly can see that behavior from the media companies with a linear TV background, and potentially Amazon with their growing Ad business. As long as Netflix stays clear that should keep competition in check, once they start doing ads, I think that would signal the good times are over (squeezing the consumer).
captaincaveman··on Ask HN: What will it take to destroy the ads market?
TV is solved, pay the subscription (in majority of cases). Don't use Google for search, run an adblocker, and bail on sites that force it.

It sounds like you have the problem letting go of the ad subsidized media, apparently many people are fine with it.

If you can't afford to pay for the ad free content, fair enough, but maybe be grateful you at least have a means of getting it without paying.

captaincaveman··on The hardest thing about engineering is requirements
That's a pretty good observation, too often Product owners are acting like project managers, not much vision lots of detail management.
captaincaveman··on Why is it difficult for developers to learn another programming language? (2020)
I'd argue Prolog is harder, maybe not to grok the basic premise, but to actually write some software with!
captaincaveman··on Ask HN: Should there be a “draft” for cyber war?
I think the enemy should draft engineers, the more the better, nothing will slow them down more so than a bunch of grumpy devs trying to work together, likely kick off a civil war!
captaincaveman··on Ask HN: I realise data science is not for me and feel depressed
In my experience its because they are more interested in researching interesting things, rather than delivering the project/task they are assigned to. Basically jump down every rabbit hole they can find!
