capdiz··on Founder Mode
https://x.com/paulg/status/1830300111232188626

He does clarify, in the linked reply, that he didn't provide examples or go into detail about what exactly "founder mode" is or how it should be done because it needs a lot of research and would more or less require a whole book to explain.

capdiz··on US Tests Explosive at Nuclear Site as Russia Revokes Ban on Atomic Weapons Tests
The most scary thing is that they are living in an echo chamber. The world around us is becoming more dangerous at an unprecented pace, conversations that were wrongly pushed to the dinner table are starting to come out in full view.

The HN community will be in shock when it finally hits on them that they too will be affected by what is happening across the ocean. The belief of unlimited superiority is blinding the fact that other people are now more willing to do harm than previously imagined.

capdiz··on US Tests Explosive at Nuclear Site as Russia Revokes Ban on Atomic Weapons Tests
I feel your pain. On here, when it comes to anything to do with the Russia or China, it's best you stay quiet. You are dealing with most propagandized community when it comes to world affairs.

PS. The downvotes don't put food on your table.

capdiz··on India suspends visas for Canadians as row escalates
Define Whataboutism?

It is my father having a love child with the neighbour's wife while I get a ass whopping for sleeping with the maid.

All jokes aside; I believe the western world set a dangerous precedent with the war on terror and the chickens are coming home to roost. Am fearful of what is to come in the future.

Russia's war on Ukraine may end up emboldening nations to act as they please with regards to dissidents wherever they might be and this is a scary world that we moving into.

capdiz··on Who is going to replace Google for us?
Supposing it's just a youthful phase. Like the fashion industry for example. Where skinny jeans were popular in the 80's then baggy jeans in the 90's. Then skinny jeans are back in sync now. Don't you think personal blogs and forums will come in sync at some point in the future?
capdiz··on Seed investors: the good, the bad and the ugly, from a founder who’s been there

capdiz··on Ask HN: What is your favorite motto?
Proverbs 27:17 - "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another."
capdiz··on DigitalOcean is laying off staff
Been a while since I logged in and commented on hacker news, but I had to login in order to give testimony on how digitalocean has been helpful to me this past year (2019).

2019 was one of the worst years for me financially, jobless, in debt and with a one year old child and girlfriend to look after. I was always late on payments for my 5$ digitalocean droplet and would always have my account suspended. I would always ask for an extension period and the wonderful guys at digitalocean would gladly grant me an extension and lift the suspension off my account.

And when I read the story my heart skipped a beat wondering what was going to befall my entrepreneurship dreams this year. Thanks a lot for the comment and am forever grateful to you and the team at digitalocean

capdiz··on Please Do Not Be a One Trick Pony
"Lifetime careers no longer exist. I knew a bunch of people that were charging $200 per hour to do HTML in the early 90’s. Frontpage ate their lunch." Still sounds like a lifetime career to me. The "one trick pony" will always evolve with the requirements of the time. Though your observations are limited to tech, if a programmer succeeded in something like farming or health science that would make a great career change. So yes lifetime careers do exist. Its only the requirements/tools that evolve overtime.
capdiz··on Nokia 215
This phone will come in handy for some of us in Africa. The African phone market is flooded with cheap dual sim chinese phones that "can perform more tasks" than what microsoft hopes to achieve with its phone. But for 29$ they are [the chinese phones] still a rip-off for many. Buggy software applications, short lifespan (3-6 months) and spread viruses like crazy.
capdiz··on Ask HN: How do you know when to quit your startup?
I would suggest reading Ryan Carson's blog. there's a good post with the same title as your post. hope it's helpful.

capdiz··on Leo The Homeless Coder Is Still Homeless
"The bare minimum to keep myself distracted and fed was all I did even though so much more was possible. I told myself I liked the freedom, but in truth I was just too scared and had too low of self esteem to take on a more comfortable lifestyle." I don't know whether i fit this description. But it just did resonate with me. Am not homeless but still live at my moms house (27yrs old). Never really held down a real job (9-5) for all i can rememeber. Been moving from web app after web app hoping i could build/stumble upon something that can improve my livelihood but zero and it feels like am really running out of time.
capdiz··on Two big announcements
"A company that's not good at marketing and sales doesn't stay a company - no matter how good the products are ;-)".

does a product that grows due to word of mouth amount to good marketing? i believe not. dropbox, github and recently put.io. i learnt about these products because of word of mouth e.g show hn not Google ads or some youtube marketing gimmick. i tend to use a product if a friend i know is immune to FOMO recommends it to me.

capdiz··on My Startup has 30 Days to Live — In 30 days, my startup will be be dead

capdiz··on The Positive Programmer
Thanks for the link. I remember the first time i made a really silly comment without reading the full story i was put into place (downvoted ruthlessly) by the community and i knew i had done something terrible. This is the post https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2825177. From then on i really took sometime without commenting on hn not because i was angry, but because i was scared of being downvoted. It taught me i needed to get my facts right before commenting on hn however much harm i never meant to cause.
capdiz··on Watsi (YC W13) and the Future of Patronage
Thank you for pointing me to Kiva. Checking it out and its definitely something i could work on. Thanks again.
capdiz··on Watsi (YC W13) and the Future of Patronage
Am jealous. Why the fuck didn't i think of this before. Am from Africa. Everyone needs help up in this bitch. Guess what? I got caught up with these 30 under 30 posts and how i made n amount of $$ in n amount of years. Thank you Watsi. I don't i have to make a profit to a make difference. Thank you.
capdiz··on How To Accept Bitcoin On Your Website
Can my bitcoin payments be sent to an external site or external bitcoin address other than a US bank account since i don't have one.
capdiz··on Start-ups are all Naked in the Mirror
“You need to stop comparing our internal issues with their press releases”. This out to be taken to a broader point of view like for example life itself. We end up comparing ourselves to other peoples outside appearances and in the end find ourselves burnt-out not knowing it never was greener on the other side. It was all keeping up appearances.
capdiz··on The Aha Moments That Made Paul Graham's Y Combinator Possible
"It's an overstatement to say that the idea of Viaweb was too strong to fail. We came close to failing several times." Sounds polite and down to earth but its very true. Google, Microsoft am sure they all had times when they came close to failing. That's the good thing about being successful. The hard times are forgotten by everyone (mostly the naysayers) else apart from the person/people who really felt them most thus making that success bitter sweet.
capdiz··on Inventing a Soccer Ball for Poor Countries
If any of you is ever in Uganda hit me up for a game of football. That aside i wish this had come when i was still younger. I remember inflating polythene that was used for packaging 1ltr milk sachets and using tyre tubes as strings for holding up these packagings and for football we lived. I should post a how to video for that come to think of it.
capdiz··on World wide wasteland
"Right now hacker news and reddit are top notch. But they too will die eventually." Scary thought but aren't these two built on top of what's dyeing. Which are links, "as in nobody links to other websites anymore". You are right no one links to interesting content in their blog posts anymore which is quite sad. But so long as HN and reddit users keep posting links that they find interesting the future is all good.
capdiz··on Show HN: Bringing your favorite suppliers in one place
Sorry for the lingo. I had hoped to change it but been away from my computer. The idea is basically that: you invite your friends who are suppliers (legitimately) they might range from selling cars, electronics or real-estate. If they start listing on the site, you recommend their listings to other users around you. Hope you get the brief explanation.
capdiz··on Why you need your own company
Am 26 and just moved back home where i hope to make this happen. Do i have resources to pull from? Not really and to be frank with you i don't know what to expect. About getting a job? My fear is i might get comfortable at it and just give up on my dream. Thanks though
capdiz··on Why you need your own company
Am jobless, am broke and i want to start my own company. Am currently working on my web app that i really hope will turn out to be my first company. Keep you posted
capdiz··on Paul Graham's Letter to YC Companies
"The best solution is to not need money. The less you need investor money, the more investors like you". That's true if you are dropbox, airbnb and other startups that have a solid revenue avenues other than advertising. If twitter or facebook itself had been founded after that disastrous ipo (facebook ipo) they would be in a worse position than dropbox or airbnb in terms of funding and revenue. That said, i think facebook will get to its intended valuation within this year.
capdiz··on Instagram’s founder, a marketer who learned to code at night
Spin aside. His story would be really inspiring for folks i have met who think that for one to learn how to program, they need to go to Uni and apply for a cs degree which is bullshit.
capdiz··on Advice, like youth, probably just wasted on the young
I always thought buzz luhrmann wrote the song first. Just to learn it was an article in the Chicago tribune.
