> possibly due to unnaturally fast change in perspective when turning

Couldn't you just move the mouse slower so the turning is slower? Or lower the mouse sensitivity?

capableweb··on Fish – Update on the Rust port
> 1. It's amazing that they're doing this as a gradual C++ to Rust rewrite, while keeping it working end-to-end, if I understand correctly.

Seems to me they're not doing it gradually at all.

> Another thing:

> We plan on not doing any partial-rust release.

> That means we would be doing e.g. fish 4.0 as fully rust and zero C++, and I think, contrary to what we usually do that warrants a beta. (Ordinarily we've stopped doing betas and release candidates because they simply don't get any testing).

> We also still want to do a 3.7.0 in-between release that is still purely C++, so we have a better jumping off point for platforms that can't handle the rust version. It would be 3.6.1 with some neat changes backported.

Published by the same author, one day after the submission article.

Instead of retracting the first article as being wrong, the author now got two articles. Neat.

The style might be, but the CSS isn't, seems there is css variables and flex usage, that's not web 2.0.
capableweb··on Ubisoft blames 'technical error' for showing pop-up ads in Assassin's Creed
> Ubisoft confesses that they've laid off entire QA departments, and now let marketing executives green-light which build gets released to the public.
capableweb··on Ubisoft blames 'technical error' for showing pop-up ads in Assassin's Creed
Does that really change the impact a lot? Besides, at least internet-loaded ads can be blocked easier than modding out ad assets from a game.
capableweb··on Ubisoft blames 'technical error' for showing pop-up ads in Assassin's Creed
Decades.
capableweb··on Ubisoft blames 'technical error' for showing pop-up ads in Assassin's Creed
FIFA games are pretty mainstream and have had them since the 90s sometime. I think the first one I played was 97 and it definitely had real ads in it.
capableweb··on Pokémon is no longer just a game – it's a lifestyle
I don't remember this at all, and I played all of the games from Red/Blue to Crystal I think. Was there shortages of cartridges or something in some countries?
capableweb··on Stripe live dashboard
Ah, of course, they make no money per transaction hence.
capableweb··on Stripe live dashboard
Numbers look impressive, but seems there is a baseline missing. For example, currently 8.5K businesses are having "their best day ever on Stripe", but what does that number normally look like?

> The US government "funds" SpaceX in the same way you fund Apple when you buy an iPhone or Shell when you buy gas.

It's a bit different. Without the US gov as a early customer taking lots of risk, they company wouldn't exist. Apple or Shell wouldn't change even if 100,000 customers decided not to buy their products/service anymore.

> The first two Falcon 1 launches were purchased by the United States Department of Defense under a program that evaluates new US launch vehicles suitable for use by DARPA. The first three launches of the rocket, between 2006 and 2008, all resulted in failures, which almost ended the company. Financing for Tesla Motors had failed, as well, and consequently Tesla, SolarCity, and Musk personally were all nearly bankrupt at the same time.

capableweb··on Write libraries instead of services, where possible
So what kind of service were you doing? As far as I know, nginx and others can handle more things than just http.
capableweb··on Write libraries instead of services, where possible
You can just do this with nginx or whatever you have in front (IIS if you're into Microsoft stuff I guess?). Run service at port xxx1, this is your "live" port. When you wanna upgrade, launch service to port xxx2, do graceful reload of config, swap the ports around so "live" port now points to right service, graceful reload of config again and done!

Except it's 2023, and almost no people who've dealt with cryptocurrency is in jail. A few notable exceptions exists, but you don't exactly go to jail for sending 0.1 Bitcoin around.
capableweb··on OpenAI: The Battle of the Board
> And if so, in what world do they see themselves this ever being available to the public? There is literally zero percent chance AGI will ever be given to the public. The CIA/FBI will stash it in a black box and use it to continue exploiting the world with a few “here and there” releases for society.

If the board actually believes in it's own mission (which is up to debate) then they'd have a hard time arguing for anything else than a open/FOSS release of the mode straight up, because otherwise yeah, that would likely happen.

Absolutely. And I'm sure the talker had a "<wait for laugh>" in their transcript, which they had to quickly skip since people were taking it seriously.

The conversation was about how many spam messages we received, not how many were caught or how. But since you're curious: sendmail + SpamAssassin, running on my own server.

> Teenage Engineering Syndrome, oppressive proprietary products with undeniably appealing designs

Kind of comes with the sector/industry, not a lot high-quality, standalone gear that wouldn't be considered "oppressive proprietary products".

capableweb··on Elevated Errors on API and ChatGPT
I think a better analogy in this case, would be if you bought a kitchen set that is advertised as "3 to 10 pieces" and you only receive 3, I'm not sure you could claim a refund, unless they mislead you in some other way.

This is because of the terms of service you agree to when you first signed up to OpenAI, which has "WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICES WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ACCURATE OR ERROR FREE" in it, in the "Disclaimer of Warranties" section. https://openai.com/policies/terms-of-use

They upfront tell you that it won't be uninterrupted, so I'm guessing you have little legal rights here for some hours of downtime each month. If it was unavailable for a month or more, things would obviously change.

capableweb··on EP–133
Yes, absolutely they licensed it. Teenage Engineering is not a random mom-and-pop shop, and that image is not a photograph that most people wouldn't recognize.
capableweb··on EP–133
Yes, you'd be able to use whatever samples you want; transfer from the computer ("drag and drop samples using the sample tool") or record them yourself via the input.
capableweb··on Email obfuscation: What still works in 2023?
Another: Used the same email for ~2 decades, never hidden it, giving it out freely and available on lots of public websites including my own. Get around ~30 spam emails per day, all automatically marked as spam. Around 2-3 gets through my filter each month.

Just do it, it's a lot of fun! You only live once, and if you save the box + bags and regret the purchase, you can sell it for minimal loss :)

capableweb··on Stable Video Diffusion
Not sure I'd call that "insane quality", more like neat prototypes. I'm excited where things will be in the future, but clearly it has a long way to go.
capableweb··on EP–133
The pricing is surprisingly low ($299) for being Teenage Engineering, wonder if they got tired of people complaining about their pricing? I guessed somewhere around $1000 before seeing the price.

I have not, so I went to https://civitai.com/ which I guess is what you're talking about? But I cannot find a single video there, just images and models.

What's rude is highly regional though, I'm sure "git" could be considered very rude in some places while not at all in some. Just like "cunt" isn't as rude in some places as in others.
