capableweb··on Ayllu: Hackable Code Forge Built on Open Standards
Gitea have worked like a wonder for my purposes, even when running it on a Raspberry PI (although the raspberry server was for a small group of 3 developers at most). It was still very responsive and didn't feel heavy at all.
capableweb··on Show HN: Open source alternative to ChatGPT and ChatPDF-like AI tools
> There must be more to it than I realize.

PDF material comes with different information density. If you have a lose collection of 100 manuals, and you need to find a snippet of information that could be in 10 different ones, I'm guessing something like this can help you navigate and locate what you need.

capableweb··on Murder is a pixel art ECS game engine in C#
Not just about performance, but about getting a very well decoupled code base as well when using ECS.
capableweb··on W4 Games raises $15M to drive video game development with Godot Engine
Yes, it has. But game engine adoption takes time, it's not immediately clear that it is eating some of Unity's lunch, as games have to be developed, launched and appreciated before it's obvious for the average (developer) person.

Look at some of the games that made Unity popular in the first place, and the people/companies that made them. Lots of them are moving to Godot now, but again, it'll take time before those people/companies launch the games.

> Precisely how is OpenAI eating anyone's lunch? This is a serious question.

Because they made, maintain and offer GPT-4 which is currently the top-of-the-line LLM available. GPT-3 was also top-of-the-line when it launched, and they've proven they can iterate on the model and launch better ones.

Currently, both open and non-models are just about barely competitive with GPT-3.5, but none is close to GPT-4.

Even if they aren't profitable today, it's hard to imagine they won't be able to monetize things better, since their model is way ahead of any other model.

That is, they manage to get that far before the company collapses from the inside, which seems more and more likely everyday.

capableweb··on French AI startup Mistral secures €2B valuation
Considering Google been lying in their marketing videos about their AI capabilities, OpenAI seems to be falling apart from the inside and Facebook refuses to release open (not commercially-locked "open") models, there seems to be space for at least one honest and open AI company.
capableweb··on French AI startup Mistral secures €2B valuation
So? People are investing in Mistral too (which this submission is about), albeit smaller sums, so far.
capableweb··on French AI startup Mistral secures €2B valuation
Which one? Everything on their website is still about the 7B model. 7B is the only model available on their huggingface page too: https://huggingface.co/mistralai

Edit: I'm guessing this is the model referenced: "Mistral "Mixtral" 8x7B 32k model [magnet]" - https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=38570537

capableweb··on French AI startup Mistral secures €2B valuation
> Good luck competing with Microsoft, Facebook and Google

Funny, considering people said the same thing about OpenAI and look who is eating FAANGs lunch now when it comes to AI?

capableweb··on French AI startup Mistral secures €2B valuation
> Can someone explain to me what they're trying to do now?

> "By creating mistral.ai, we intend to train state-of-the-art models with counter-positions to closed-model current offerings. Our vision is to become a leading actor in the field, while developing a very valuable business around integrating these models in the European industry and beyond."

Is this just a rhetorical question from your side? Because the last sentence gives you the answer. They do open models + focusing on integrating those open models into European industry. Seems pretty easy to grasp.

capableweb··on W4 Games raises $15M to drive video game development with Godot Engine
> I am afraid it's still a very long way before they become for game development what Blender is for 3D modelling these days

Makes sense. Blender is coming up to being 30 years old soon, and it still isn't heavily embedded into the mainstream pipelines, but it's getting closer every day.

By contrast, Godot is about 10 years old, but still has eaten some of Unity's pie. Cannot wait to see how Godot is in about 20 years, surely they will have surpassed Unity at that point :)

capableweb··on Tesla Cybertruck's stiff structure, sharp design raise safety concerns
> That’s no problem, city and suburbs are already full of Teslas

As I said, I'd be very happy about it being classified as a tractor because then it won't come close to any pedestrian-heavy areas like cities, which this machine seems to purposefully be as hostile to as possible.

capableweb··on Tesla Cybertruck's stiff structure, sharp design raise safety concerns
> I can see some enterprising Tesla lawyers propose that because of weight and towing power its actually a tractor if they just add some special legal connector.

That be great, tractors are banned to be used within cities and on highways (in many places).

capableweb··on Gemini AI
It might still be crazy impressive, but none-the-less, going forward we now know that we cannot trust Google's videos about it, as they're heavily edited to look a lot more impressive than it is.
capableweb··on Swedish court rules against Tesla in dispute with postal service over deliveries
The fee goes to organise actions, like that people can strike but still get paid.

How much experience do you have with Swedish unions specifically? And with Swedish industry in general?

Judging by your comments, your experience seems to come from reading US news, is that close to the truth?

For example, the percentage of your salary for membership is not a static one, it varies. And even so, it has a max amount (around 60USD last time I checked). Did you account for that when doing your calculations?

capableweb··on Swedish court rules against Tesla in dispute with postal service over deliveries
> The point is that it's not Tesla's employees that are behind it.

Unions don't do solidarity strikes across the entire Nordics without having the support of the people they're trying to help.

> It is people working elsewhere -- or rather, the management of the labour unions that organize those other people.

The people you call "the management of the labour unions" are workers just like the rest. Again, they are not "career-unionists", they are workers who care about worker rights, just like all the other people at the other unions joining the strike.

capableweb··on Swedish court rules against Tesla in dispute with postal service over deliveries
> What makes Tesla different from Klarna and Spotify

The "heritage" between the three is also different. Klarna and Spotify are/was Swedish, they know what going up against a union means, and it often involves going against multiple unions as they all help each other.

Tesla clearly have no idea what they were going against, as what is happening now is such an obvious fallout from not understanding the country they're operating in.

capableweb··on Swedish court rules against Tesla in dispute with postal service over deliveries
There are laws and there are norms. In Sweden, both are equally important and you'll get left out if you break either. It's sad in a lot of cases, as it removes some individuality, but it's how the country been operating for a long time.

Expecting to run a company against the norms in a culture that so heavily leans on norms is bound to create conflict, which is what we're seeing here.

capableweb··on Swedish court rules against Tesla in dispute with postal service over deliveries
Not only that, but the co-founder and CEO of Spotify is also Swedish which means he has some perspective on how unions work in Sweden so he can be pragmatic. Musk lacks any sort of perspective in that market, seemingly.
capableweb··on Swedish court rules against Tesla in dispute with postal service over deliveries
> The important detail which most people seem to miss is that Tesla's workers aren't behind this. They don't want to unionize, because there's no reason to.

> The IF Metall union is striking because they just want to get their cut.

What sort of people do you think IF Metall is made up of? It's the second largest union in Sweden, the people who are a part of the union are also workers at Tesla and other companies. It's not made up of "career-unionists" if that's what you thought.

> The $26 B cash on hand should be used somewhere, instead of usual executive package and share buyback.

Yup, squashing worker rights for corporations everywhere sounds like a good way of spending $26B.

> Edit:- If my comment is not as per HN guidelines, I am willing to delete it.

Why don't you try to read the guidelines before posting, if you think you might be breaking some guideline?

But no, you're getting downvoted not because of breaking the rules, but because of the horrible opinion and lack of care of the common worker.

capableweb··on OpenAI employees did not want to go work for Microsoft
LinkedIn data says ~44% of the OpenAI team is "Engineering", the rest is operations, human resources and sales.

So most likely, if most of the employees moved over to Microsoft, they wouldn't get the same comp, at most 44% of the company would.

capableweb··on Norway Joins Denmark in Swedish Tesla Strike/Blockade
So you mean that GDP is a measurement of the productivity of employees?

And you're measuring "success" of a economic model just based on how it increases GDP? What about lowly things like "life expectancy" or other things related to, you know, actual human lives?

I knew USAians were "corporate and financials"-horny but this takes it to a whole other level.

capableweb··on Norway Joins Denmark in Swedish Tesla Strike/Blockade
What exactly you measure when you measure "amount of people X by almost X trillion dollars"? How did you manage to arrive at a number that supposedly means productivity of individual employees?

As someone who has launched countless of products, services, demos and more on HN (for almost two decades now) and other places, you can't really let those overly negative comments get to you. And it happens everywhere, not just on HN, even though people here tend to try to hit your soft spots, for some reason.

But at least I've found that the overly negative comments on HN has at least a tiny bit of feedback one could learn from, compared to other platforms where it's just outright vile comments with zero feedback one could use.

So yeah, HN can be ruthless, but so is the rest of the internet. At least here there is a tiny bit of feedback mixed in, and usually the rest of the comments have something insightful to say.

> but the fact that you can only use it through Clojure is kind of sad

You can use Clojure stuff from Java, if you really want to: https://clojure.org/reference/java_interop#_calling_clojure_...

> but a dynamically typed functional programming language is kind of too much of design flaw for me

And for others it's the opposite. Unless the language have good primitives for distributed computing and is a functional and dynamic language, it's usually not worth spending the time to learn it, for me at least.

Good thing there is at least one language out there for everyone, so we have choices :)

capableweb··on Maelstrom: A workbench for learning distributed systems
Every time I see something implemented in a non-lisp language I'm like "the problem was complicated enough, why did you have to introduce a bunch of accidental complexity?!"

Then I remember that everyone's brain works differently, and that's ok :)
