cannonedhamster··on Patent trolls are shaking us down for selling “rubies” in our game
This is a company that literally took the path of lessening the amount of money that they receive from their users because they didn't like the ethics of it. This is not a bad company.

cannonedhamster··on American companies are suppressing wages for many workers
We get it, you really dislike unions and think that all union members are scum without any ethics. Before you try to walk your comment back, this is a pretty straightforward summation of what you just said. I think you're clearly overlooking the wide amount of abuses being done against employees, especially in the tech sector. How many times have you heard of a "salaried" employee being asked/forced to work 100 hour weeks end on end for months without extra compensation for some pie in the sky promise of stock options that get diluted with every new employee or stock offering? How many CEOs that drive companies into the ground but still get golden parachutes for laying off workers have you heard about. The power imbalance isn't with the ineffectual unions, it's with the corporations and owners that engage in rent seeking behavior.
cannonedhamster··on American companies are suppressing wages for many workers
We can't even pass a federal budget, but we can make sure corporate lobbying gets their giveaways. Laws in the United States as of late almost never benefit the citizen, unless of course you consider corporations people.
cannonedhamster··on American companies are suppressing wages for many workers
Yup, my company had a clause that I could never talk bad about them in one contract. I refused to sign as I don't give away civil liberties for money. What amazed me was that almost no one else even bothered to read it before signing.
cannonedhamster··on In an Era of ‘Smart’ Things, Sometimes Dumb Stuff Is Better
The power cycling the car to get the stereo to work isn't limited to Fords unfortunately. I have a "dumb" smart radio and the BT is so bad between my Google phone and the car that I've had numerous glitches some that require power cycling the car, which is insane. I honestly cannot believe something that works flawlessly in nearly every other situation is so screwing in the car, what I wouldn't give to have my aux connector in again.
cannonedhamster··on Doctors in China Lead Race to Treat Cancer by Editing Genes
The problem is you literally cannot trust anything positive that comes out of China. This isn't jingoism, western countries have their own issues, but China is a country set up only for rewarding positive results and severely punishing negative or even neutral results. Having worked from China in numerous jobs, a good chunk of the useful information they have is a liability as it's most likely stolen from elsewhere. To be clear this has absolutely nothing to do with the individual person, but with the risk/reward structure that exists in mainland China.
cannonedhamster··on How does Chinese tech stack up against American tech?
Any successful Chinese business is or becomes a Chinese state-owned business. The only difference is that the Chinese govt is the rentier, versus multiple ones in the US.
cannonedhamster··on 2600 Accused of Using Unauthorized Ink Splotches (2015)
This was spurious entirely. They claimed ownership of an asset that wasn't theirs based on a composite asset they didn't own. They literally did no checking on whether or not they owned the original resource. The fact of the matter is this was an automated shakedown in one of the most corrupt industries in America. Automated copyright and patent abuse claims are literally sucking money out of the productive engine of the country and the whole industry needs to be sued out of existence and people who do it need to end up in jail for long sentences as a warning to other jerks that might try it.
cannonedhamster··on HR has lost the trust of employees
Good luck if you're in a state that allows non-competes or forced arbitration for contracts. The companies pay the arbitration and will black ball you in the entire industry. Protection for American workers is a joke.
cannonedhamster··on There Might Be No Way to Live Comfortably Without Also Ruining the Planet
Markets only work when the government regulating them isn't subject to regulatory capture.
cannonedhamster··on 26% of violent crime convicts account for 63% of violent crime conviction (2014)
You're assuming people use logical, rational thought which has ample amounts of evidence against it. Jails used to be horrific, yet crime rates were higher. The presence of a jail sentence or even a death sentence as a deterrent is widely discredited. The only uses for prisons are to prevent future crimes by removing the ability to perform crimes and intensive rehabilitation. Most former convicts do not want to reoffend but the American social and legal system of punishing people for their entire lives for offenses committed once prevents effective reintegration into society.

All the science points to preventing initial conditions for conviction and significant improvements needed post release.

cannonedhamster··on Couple that paid $90k for a private street in SF is forced to give it back
This is unequal application of the law. If this were an unoccupied house and the bill was sent to the person on file for nearly 40 years, there would be no way out of the foreclosure for poor people. The fact is that the buyers followed the law and the wealthy did not.

The wealthy once again got a free ride from the system while working to put others in debt. This is what's broken in our system. The wealthy have the money and should have purchased the land back. Instead they used money to buy political favor. The rich probably paid more in legal expenses than just buying the land back. This is spite and exertion of power, money, and influence, plain and simple. If the rules don't apply equally to everyone, then why do they apply to anyone?

cannonedhamster··on Slack: Other browsers require significant effort so we're focused on Chrome
Yeah, we're in a similar boat using it to monitor Jenkins, Datadog, Zendesk, JIRA, and a whole slew of other things aside from chat. It's hard to find a better bang for your buck if your company is bought into the ecosystem.
cannonedhamster··on Why are successful professionals still working 70 hours a week?
I'm technically a successful professional, but I'd certainly love to work less than 70 hours weeks. I don't have a choice, we're understaffed. It's been shown in black and white to management who is betting a sale will bring those people in. The scam comes into play when we realize we're salary. I used to look at salary as something to achieve, flexible work schedule where I could put in the work and go home when I was done. Now the work is never done. I enjoy what I'm doing, and I'm good at it, but the drive to push everyone in the tech industry into burnout is a cancer that's carving the industry out.
cannonedhamster··on Slack: Other browsers require significant effort so we're focused on Chrome
The only thing Slack provided for the longest time was chat. Essentially it was nothing more than a decent, private IRC implementation. I'm curious what your DevOps team found as a pain point in communication. Were you just using email?

Slack now is a significantly improved tool that we use all the time for everything except large or external video chatting. It's a very nice tool for centralization of alerting, monitoring, etc. We'd find it very hard to move elsewhere as a company.

cannonedhamster··on “I guess you can’t use NYU Libraries if you don’t have Twitter or Facebook?”
It's kind of weird they didn't at least include Google as well, but the whole idea of them not having a vendor neutral solution goes out the window because they've admitted that they have other options, so they are already doing DB maintenance for those accounts. I mean I suppose if they enjoy the Republic of Kekistan accounts that they're about to get, then it's no big deal right?
cannonedhamster··on Amazon announces candidate cities for HQ2
This is why I'm hoping it doesn't end up in Boston proper. Traffic is already unbearable for a large chunk of the state during rush hours.
cannonedhamster··on Lyft says nearly 250K of its passengers ditched a personal car in 2017
I walked 5 miles or more when I lived in the city (Boston). If Seattle has any of the amenities of Boston there's a grocery store within walking distance. I always took the T (subway) everywhere. I can't imagine paying for someone to drive me places in the city, it was just never needed even for things like you're talking about.
cannonedhamster··on Boston Buzzing with HQ2 Rumors
Southern New Hampshire realistically wouldn't be a terrible spot. Manchester has phenomenal infrastructure, an airport, and the space to support the growth. I hope that they take your suggestion.
cannonedhamster··on Boston Buzzing with HQ2 Rumors
As someone who works just outside Boston, I'm really hoping they choose somewhere other than MA. Usually this comes with massive corporate welfare paid for by the taxpayers, higher traffic, and increase property costs. Massachusetts doesn't have the infrastructure in place to support a large influx of workers into a single place. The highways are a mess at the best times of the year, turning into figurative parking lots during peak commuting times, housing costs are astronomical because so many people want to live in the same spots inside the 495 belt or on RT 2 or 190. My city put in a bid which I would dread if we got. I haven't honestly seen many people who want Amazon in their hometown.
cannonedhamster··on Boston Buzzing with HQ2 Rumors
The traffic isn't as bad as NY except for certain times of the day and once you become a regular it's not difficult. The weather in the winter really only means the snow. The cold isn't terrible, but the snow just mucks everything up. It makes sense that you'd have the best seafood since Massachusetts has the largest fishing port in the entire United States.
cannonedhamster··on The problem of game developers receiving abusive messages
This sounds like a lot of industries I've worked in, most of which involve IT. I'm sort of amazed how many people think it's okay to hurl abuse at other people in general. Don't like a completely voluntary video game? Don't buy the next one and stop playing the game. Maybe submit some feedback on what is causing you not to continue playing and move on. I'm both a child and a parent and while there were a few years where I was will of spit and vinegar and mouth off at other people, I've never felt it okay to send the types of comments that some people think are acceptable (I've looked in case my memory was rose-colored).

What amazes me more are the people who bring this attitude into the real world. I've had my job threatened, co-workers physically threatened (I'm apparently somewhat imposing so I don't get physical threats often), screamed at, had someone shoot a nail gun at me...It never ceases to amaze me how people can have so little respect for themselves or others. Kindness literally costs you nothing, and yet it can often be so hard to find.

cannonedhamster··on Virgin Media lost me as a supporter
This sounds like an immensely better experience than anything in the U.S.A. that doesn't just work. I'm still jealous that you can just switch to another ISP.
cannonedhamster··on Peter Thiel Is Exploring the Creation of a Conservative Cable News Network
It looks like Alex Jones, Glenn Beck, Tomi Lahren, RT, etc.
cannonedhamster··on “Ready Player One” is the worst thing nerd culture ever produced
I listened to the audio book. Didn't seem like the worst book ever, seemed like a book made to guarantee a bunch of royalties. Wasn't the worst thing I've heard/read. I've read Ayn Rand which was definitely worse, but is still beloved by many. And here we are. Different people enjoy different things.
cannonedhamster··on Towards a bra-free Instagram experience
Hell don't even get into the bugaboo that things like Propecia and Rogaine do to make it hard for some men to perform. That right there should be a warning on the damned side of the bottle. Want to talk about something that gives two people body issues, that can be crippling.
cannonedhamster··on Decline of Rural Lending Crimps Small-Town Business
This right here is something way too few people understand. I basically had to unlearn a lot of bad habits from my family before I could get myself sorted and on a path to financial stability.
cannonedhamster··on LastPass’ Authenticator app is not secure
Prove that open source has more eyes than closed source. You can't because in reality it's most likely not true for the vast majority of software. Most software requires an incentive to look over the code and the skill to do it. The incentive to do it for closed source is money, open source is warm fuzzies or personal interest. I really love open-source software but code review is clearly not a benefit for the vast majority of people.
cannonedhamster··on LastPass’ Authenticator app is not secure
I use 1Password at work. It's not very good and doesn't seem to work on linux, which I need for work. Add to that really clunky user management...it's just not that great usability wise. I've never been able to get it to autofill either. Lastpass on the other hand just works on all my devices. We were using Keepass before but syncing was such a massive PITA that my wife wouldn't use it. Now she at least uses Lastpass with a better password than what she was using before, but I suspect until we're robbed she's not going to see the value in security. Don't get me started on her and the 2FA grievances.
cannonedhamster··on Please Don't Show Us Another “Typical Family Earning $270,000 a Year”
Depending on where you live:

* It's cheaper to buy than rent in many places.

* Unless you're in an HOA you can do more with your land, such as farm it, put a pool in, etc. Shared spaces aren't common in many places.

* Pets can often make renting impossible, especially dogs.

* Americans like physical privacy more than many Europeans. (Online privacy is a whole separate issue).

* Most rentals don't have much land, some people really like having more land.

* Rentals tend to be in places that are less affluent and offer less amenities.

* School systems are often based off property taxes so places with more home ownership tend to have more money for schools.
