cannonedhamster··on An Alternative Approach to Re-Orgs
I'm going through my third re-org in less than a year and a half. This is my 6th new boss in 3 years and I've no faith that my new boss even understands what my teams job is as the re-org stuck us in with people openly hosttile to our job. Looking for the door is right.
cannonedhamster··on Ask HN: What do you do on an Android phone that cannot be done on an iPhone?
Let's see up until recently they didn't have a dark mode.

You can't switch owners of shared family purchases on an iPhone. You need to rebuy the apps under a new family owner after dissolving the previously family which is not easy or seamless.

Plex picture uploads don't work in the background on Apple so you constantly have to take the screen to keep it active.

Basically if you like having someone else make all your design decisions for you Apple is actually a great way to go. Defaults are generally sane, but if you run into something that they haven't sorted out yet, it's going to be painful and you won't be able to fix it. My wife and daughter love their iPhones. Apple generally curates their software well and there's a good chunk of great software only available on Apple. I was constantly fighting with mine to get it the way I wanted and in the end I have up and bought a Samsung Galaxy phone. I could do what I wanted almost immediately and have had no issues. I can't remember if Apple has the ability to add a swipe keyboard either. My wife is always jealous of mine.

No. Google has let AOSP die in the vine. It's nearly impossible to properly run Android without the play store. Most OEMs develop a lot in house to combat the rot that's occurred in the open source components.
cannonedhamster··on Evernote Blows Up the ‘Fail Fast’ Gospel
I wanted two features to be a paying customer which should have been easy, the price was actually pretty reasonable.

Dark mode, or even just themes, as they would continuously break anyone who did client side decorations until they gave up. Their blistering white theme hurt my eyes to use and last I checked years later it's still one of the most requested features and still not done. You know what had themes? OneNote. I paid for it and even though I preferred Evernote in many ways, it didn't hurt my eyes to use it. Just in case I'm not being clear I'm not being figurative, the white themes in a lot of devices really hurts to look at. I switched back to Android from Apple for the same reason.

The second feature was a solid export option to text. Which frankly I could have waited for and still been happy paying.

I loved their inline images which still most apps don't do as well. They just refused to add the features and broke them if you added them yourself with every release.

Yes, obviously every other comment is about how terrible it is, however no one focuses on the tech that's available unless you're already in the field. Not sure what about my comment set people off, I almost expect it's bleedover from a different thread since there's no responses other than yours. The tech itself is pretty cool, using data sets to model similar body types. I remember seeing this when it first came out and was being used to swap President Obama's speech. I'd expect that this will be used to model missing children better, it might lead to computerized assistance in facial and body reconstruction. The tech is pretty interesting.

I kind of dislike when Reddit bleeds onto HN. Any comment not fanatically supporting extreme right wing narratives gets downvoted to oblivion. We're generally not a toxic community and the mods and community here does a pretty good job at keeping a it's on things. It's why I prefer this as pretty much my primary social network. I learn useful things here, have meaningful disagreements that don't end in name calling, and learn tons.
cannonedhamster··on App Undresses a Photo of Any Woman with a Single Click
People only see the downsides but there could be some really cool uses for the technology in image repair, think old paintings, damaged photos, etc. So while yes, this tech starts as unwilling pornography, it could turn into something generally usefully to society.
cannonedhamster··on Trump Signs Executive Order Compelling Disclosure of Prices in Health Care
Medicine will never not happen. People will continue to get sick. People will continue to become doctors. We've literally seen this before.
cannonedhamster··on Trump Signs Executive Order Compelling Disclosure of Prices in Health Care
Milton Friedman is only one school of economic thought. Nothing is proven in economics and likely won't be since it involves human psychology. When gas prices rose dramatically economists expected the US to move away from large vehicles. That's not what happened. The rational thought is almost never what happens in economics. People buy high and sell low, their purchases are often emotional, and investors pour money into acting blockchain.
cannonedhamster··on Trump Signs Executive Order Compelling Disclosure of Prices in Health Care
That's already been happening though, so I'm not sure how much that would change what's already been happening.

The Dallas shooter wanted to kill white people and cops. That's not a left or right position. Especially when you consider the Dallas Police have been some of the most proactive and one of the most well regarded police forces by the BLM movement.

The Colorado STEM shooters never had a motive released. Not sure where you got that from. One of the shooters was literally registered Democrat for less than a year. The other wasn't even old enough to vote. There's some suspected bullying that went on but that's about all anyone knows so again not a "left wing" shooting.

The only one on your list that's actually verifiably a left wing violent act is the guy who shot at Republicans. That's absolutely verified.

Contrast that with the church and synagogue shootings where people literally admitted that they were on the right. Contrast that with the pizza shop incident where Hillary and left wing people were supposed to be hiding slaves in the basement of a building with no basement, which was circulated by the right. Literally bombs sent to Democrats by people on the right. Finally the President himself calling for his supporters to beat people up at rallies.

The only way one denies the violence is more common on the right is if one is predisposed to believe it. Are there some cases where it's unclear why violence happened that have been misattributed to the right? Sure how could there not be, but there's also overwhelming evidence of violence on the right.

cannonedhamster··on Reddit has quarantined /r/The_Donald
If you haven't seen violence being called then I suspect you may not be paying attention to national media (not necessarily a bad thing). The President himself has called for violence numerous times at campaign rallies and against political rivals. There's been numerous shootings at churches, clubs, synagogues, schools, etc. that inflict real violence on people. You literally have to not pay attention to not see that politics has become radicalized. Whether things like the movement that inspired President Trump and his reverents or they are merely a symptom is debatable. The fact that /r/The_Donald still exists after the numerous brigading episodes, doxxing, and malice they've brought the platform speaks widely to the latitude that they've been given. I'm generally supportive of free speech, even speech I disagree with but The_Donald censors a ton of speech they disagree with and they aren't even really being heavily punished here.
cannonedhamster··on Trump Signs Executive Order Compelling Disclosure of Prices in Health Care
The vast majority of pure research has funding generated directly from government funds. Medical funding is roughly half from public funds. This wouldn't change with price controls. More profits don't lead to more research.
cannonedhamster··on Trump Signs Executive Order Compelling Disclosure of Prices in Health Care
Price controls force efficiency gains. If wages go up you don't stop paying your employee wages, you either train cheaper employees, find a way to get more work out of them, or find a better way to do it. The same applies to price controls.
cannonedhamster··on Trump Signs Executive Order Compelling Disclosure of Prices in Health Care
What part of the Constitution covers medical billing? Doctors can get tort protection but patients can't get billing protection? Wages have been set by the U.S. government before so I'm not sure you could argue that, and there's no personal expression protection with accepting insurance. I'm really unsure of where this could possibly become Constitutional other than the right to life.

That and they market the hell out of the car, cutting out middle men where possible. The aren't burdened by the dealership model and have been very protective of their brand. It's not like electric cars weren't made by the large auto makers, they just weren't willing to spend as much as Tesla has to feet to profitability. When Toyota made the Prius they went all in, now the Prius tech is in many of they're other cars. American manufacturers doubled down on bigger, higher polluting trucks and SUVs that all look the same and haven't had innovation in years.
cannonedhamster··on No one should be a billionaire
I'm sorry my point wasn't to criticize your point, just bring up why electric cars stopped development in favor of the ICE cars. I was intending to add to your point not take away.
cannonedhamster··on No one should be a billionaire
I don't think any of your response is invalid. The debt situation could, but hasn't been a problem in the past, however this is a bit more drastic than what's been suggested in the past. I like that we both see that a solution is indeed possible though.
cannonedhamster··on No one should be a billionaire
Electric cars have been around since cars have existed. The only reason ICE ruled cars is because we hadn't gotten to an acceptable power storage ratio comparable to the insane amount of potential power stored in oil.
cannonedhamster··on No one should be a billionaire
While I agree with you on 1 and 2, I respectfully disagree on 3. The are many very efficient government programs that function as well as could be expected for such a large system. Voting in the United States, while not always perfect runs mostly clean and efficient. Government run healthcare programs across the world seen to function fairly well. It's not government that's the issue. It goes back to your initial points. Once you have a power imbalance created by either one or a small group owning most of the debt (money) in society, the power imbalance causes corruption. The solution is relatively simple but unpalatable. Once a group reaches a certain percentage, not a specific number, of debt above the median they get taxed more heavily with that money going either directly to the bottom or to programs that benefit all. The percentages are relatively easy too, break the groups into quartiles. The top quartile should not have more money than the next lowest quartile. If more people become wealthier the taxation automatically becomes higher to spread the wealth. To keep individuals from gaining all the power you adjust the number of people based on a bell curve. Those in the top quartile should be very rare, the and as those in the bottom. That's the entirety of the taxation system. It's based on owned debt. It doesn't matter what you spend your money on, or anything like that. Money gets efficiently spread to the middle class and on keeping the lowest portions of society from abject poverty. What the wealthy do with their money at that point doesn't matter because there's a built in check in the system. Punishment for hiding money would be brutal, if the wealthy want to leave, there's the door.
cannonedhamster··on In Japan, It’s a Riveting TV Plot: Can a Worker Go Home on Time?
One of the customers I've worked for in Japan has alerts over the loudspeakers when it's time to go home. The company I work for had people working insane hours (14+ daily) and acted like it was normal. The people were obviously not doing much work staying later, but they wanted to appear to be dedicated. I'd much rather my people work hard when we need it and have time to unwind when we don't. I see it as a failing of management of every day requires an emergency level of effort.
cannonedhamster··on Why Google+ Failed
The irony here is that no one in this comment chain is using their real name, which proves the point that there are indeed chilling effects on speech when you could be punished for a simple difference of opinion. Real names is what made me drop g+. If I want to publish something as me, I don't want another platform controlling that for me. I absolutely concur with your comment that for the people this was big for, it was huge. For the rest of the population there was no compelling reason to switch.

I've tried buying upmarket items as my income has appreciated, however I haven't always found the additional cost worth the price. The KitchenAid mixer we purchased was worth every penny, but other high cost items like Pampered Chef haven't been any better than what I can purchase at Target. I'm definitely in the spot of trying to find durable, quality items at any cost as I need to plan for them to not break down when I'm gone. I don't want my wife and daughter saddled with constantly breaking garbage that I'm not here to be able to fix.
cannonedhamster··on World’s top bicycle maker is moving U.S. orders to Taiwan factory
I don't deny in my comment that they do good work. It's absolutely a double edge sword and not an easy or clear cut case of what's right versus wrong. It's well within their rights to choose how to spend their money and I wasn't attempting to assign moral or ethical judgement, just to bring up the point that if it's a concern then your money and time might be better directed elsewhere. This isn't a case of some monolithic evil organization demanding intolerance on high, but as part of their belief system it has led to multiple occasions where people have been thrown out of facilities, denied services, etc. It's up to everyone to find the line with which they are comfortable, especially in areas like this where the best use of resources might actually be giving to a cause that could be antagonistic to another cause one supports.
cannonedhamster··on Ask HN: What are the signs that you have a great manager?
Your job is not to be their friend, your job is to make them as effective a team as possible by identifying impediments to them becoming their best selves. If their work is being done, objectively you should know this, then your next task is to find ways to improve the with being done. If there's enough time to socialize then there's enough time for improvement. This is where you find time for projects that might not work, experiments that might improve quality, quantity, or just improve the overall experience for you customers and team members. There are tons of ways to be firm without micro managing.

Here's what I would recommend for you.

* Define the primary work that needs to be done. What is the purpose of your team? How effective are they at this?

* Identify the gaps. Where can you improve? What can you be doing better to delight your customers? What skills or process improvements can you add that will make things better?

* Who can you build to take your spot? You can't be promoted if no one could fill your role. This is hard and you'll get it wrong a few times, that's fine. Just keep working to build up your team

Complaints and gripes are common at first. No one likes change. Eventually it will become normal and your team will adjust. No need to micromanage, no need to complain about showing up on time unless it's crucial, i.e. a call center, just set your expectations and took forward the work starts with you though.

New York and a good chunk of the Northeast get a lot of produce from Canada year round. New York is also a major port city with fresh food coming in daily. I can't find any heirloom anything in my local market, not a big enough draw. The farmer's markets are great though fresh from field to table and usually great prices from great people. In the Bay area you actually have a really nice pipeline to farmers which probably explains the great produce. Portland seems like it might have a rain problem with would limit produce to tolerant it greenhouse crops, especially tomatoes which do poorly in tons of rain. Even lettuce needs to dry out lest it rot.

Salvation army isn't a non-profit in the strict traditional sense of the word, they are a church that happens to do a lot of worthwhile charity, The church part of their mission has led to some controversy regarding how they treat members of the LGBT community. While each individual office is different there's been a consistent thread of this running through the organization in line with their belief system. If that's not a concern to you then disregard, if it is you may want to consider how your donations and purchases are being spent.

As for finding thrift store items in general, you can find some great things in need of minor tlc, especially hand tools. I tend to use my battery powered told for most things these days that are have tools so plugged tools aren't my forte but I still have a drill I bought ages ago that's lasted me numerous projects and years without failing. It's kind of remarkable how well built some tools are.

There seems to be a major difference in you trying to make a good, quality product which have yet to have benefited from economy of scale and cheap knock offs that are often dangerous, misleading, or just plain cut corners. For a large number of people and products this isn't actually a problem, like you say. Harbor freight had an excellent business model in just this but they are very up front about it. You're not buying the best wishlist quality, you're buying the best quality they can find at a specific and accessible price. That's adding efficiency to the supply chain, which is most of what Walmart does. Don't sell yourself short that your first product iteration isn't there yet. You'll find ways to improve and lower the cost of the product in safe and efficient ways over time.
