People still play code golf. It's just now on it's own site.

canadiancreed··on Sen. Wyden imagines the White House is willing to reconsider surveillance
I picture exactly this happening. "Oh Trendstone? Yes that project was shelved. It's now called Blackbriar, but as you didn't ask that, so we wont' tell you it's the same thing with a different name."
canadiancreed··on Sen. Wyden imagines the White House is willing to reconsider surveillance
I wonder if Congress didn't support such matters in the first place.
canadiancreed··on Sen. Wyden imagines the White House is willing to reconsider surveillance
That it says "considered" and not "will be revoked immediately" is incredibly telling.
canadiancreed··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (July 2013)
Is there a reason that I'm missing as to why this one is voted down? It seems (from what I can see at least) legitish.
canadiancreed··on Ask HN: Market for SAS/R developers?
Ya I should have specified my domain when posting this. I'm currently in the healthcare field for one of the larger hospitals here in Toronto. One of the reasons for this posting was to gauge how useful it'd be for the private sector, as it's both my preference and it's only a year long contract.
canadiancreed··on Rand Paul Bill Would Curb NSA on Phone Records
Funny how stuff like this only starts getting action from politicians once it's politically expidiant to do so.
canadiancreed··on Are coders worth it?
Well I put it this way to friends of mine out in the Maritimes. Back in 2012 I was laid off due to government cutbacks (the company I worked for did the Tourism site), and in the three months afterwards I had three interviews across the maritimes. In a week visit to Toronto, I had twenty five interviews.

And salary is like night and day. The highest PHP salary I heard of out there in my interviews and travels was 55k. Toronto PHP jobs start at 60k and many are in the 70's and 80's. I've heard an even larger gulf for Java devs, especialy as you get up to the senior ranks. I don't know about salarys for other languages, but if you don't know Java, .Net, or PHP in the maritimes, you'll be waiting a long time to be employed. There's the occasional C++ or Python gig, but youd' make twice as much in Toronto.

And remote jobs, in Canada, in my experience, do not exist. I've seen maybe five in the last five years. Meanwhile I see remote gigs in the States daily. Basically if your'e looking for remote work, you're looking in the US. Canadian employers I've found are leery to openly hostile about folks working remotely.

Now things could have changed in the last year, and that's just my own experience, but if your'e looking for solid work, and good pay, and in Canada, it's effectively Toronto or bust.

canadiancreed··on Are coders worth it?
Depends on where you are. Toronto? Definitely. I get recruiters every day asking if I want a job (always onsite though, never contracts). Anywhere else I've found salary and perks drop quickly. Case in point, my last location (PEI) the salary was barely above minimum wage (35-50k/year), even though they keep complaining about shortages in skilled IT folks

canadiancreed··on American Dialect Map
Funny I was expecting to get that as well, but I got a tie between "The West" and "The Midland", even thought I've lived in Canada my whole life, and have never been further west then Indianapolis. Wonder if living out in the Maritimes for a few years has any effect on that? Would explain why my American wife says I dont' sound like a typical Canuck.
canadiancreed··on Aurora Borealis visible in Northern US tonight
Ugh never fails. Every time there's northern lights visible it's cloudy. :(
canadiancreed··on Canadian Prime Minister: $400M to Strengthen Canadian VC
I'm hoping that it's not a national version of the PMP program that PEI had (and may still have) a few years ago, and will be spread out to those needing funding instead of folks that know the right people. But you're right it's got that slightly fishy smell to it. Guess the only way we'll know for sure is if we see all the money flowing into Conservative held ridings and/or associates. It'd be great for my current employer (startup out in the middle of nowhere in a Conservative riding that is getting government grants), but it's not the way it should be done.

canadiancreed··on Stop Generalizing About Europe
If I'm reading you correctly, Quebec wouldn't apply, because Quebec is in Canada, not the United States.
canadiancreed··on Ask HN: Why don't you work less?
Oddly enough I'm trying to work more so I can do three months off/pay off debts. Dont' think I'd want to work less then I currently do.
canadiancreed··on Photos of Cabins
If your'e that remote, getting away from tech is usually one of the motivators.

That being said, I'm currently renting a place a bit more conventional then most of the ones linked, and the wireless here is decent. 3 down/1 up; wont' burn the internet down, but it does what I need to do work, and allows me to live where I wish.

canadiancreed··on The People's Bailout
Indeed. I know that if I can buy a dollar of debt that I owe for a nickel, I want in on that. It'd make things a lot easier on my pocketbook.

canadiancreed··on Ask HN: How do you find clients?
Tried that for a while when attempting to do the same thing, and it would effectively kill their interest. Perhaps it's market or location dependant?
canadiancreed··on I did the scariest thing I can imagine: I resigned

canadiancreed··on What killed the Linux desktop
As a FreeBSD user since 2007 I found the desktop options to be just as clunky as Linux if not more so. It was the only part of the OS that didn't just work when I used it in my travels, so it's stayed as server duty. If there was an open source windows managing system that was on par with Mac's version...whole new world. (There might be, I havnet' looked since 2009 so)

canadiancreed··on RIM announces $518 million loss, 5,000 job cuts, delays BB10 to 2013
As someone that lives a 1/2 hour or so from the Kitchener-Waterloo area I'm thinking it'll have a hard hitting effect on the K-W market, on par with Nortel's implosion in West Ottawa/Kanata. When I moved here I picked the location to be able to hit as many locations as possible for potential employment. With RIM going south, moving closer to Toronto is sounding like the way to go, to say nothing of the rise in competition there will be for Java/C coders
canadiancreed··on Django People has returned
the map points seems really off. For Canada for example there's folks that are based in Edmonton, but are treading water in the middle of Hudson Bay. Also is there a reason why the map is so zoomed out when you click on countries?

canadiancreed··on Those Who Have a Job, Want to Quit. Those Who Want a Job, Can’t Find One.
I definitely agree with you about the benefits that seem to be tacked on. foosball table, weekly movies, free beverage, etc etc... to be are almost useless. I'm applying for a job to work, not to hang out at my buddies apartment. The only important benefits, to me at least, are the following:

* health benefits - You'd think that'd be covered in Canada, but you still need coverage for stuff like dental, prescriptions, and what not. It's surprising how many It companies DON'T offer any form of this at all. * vacation time - two weeks is nice, but if you want to attract a top shelf candidate, offer three or even four. Being able to enjoy a week away from the office is worth more then the all the free pop in the fridge.

NOw I'm not saying that I'd be against having free pop in the fridge of what not, but there nice IF those benefits that I've listed are provided in a substantial quantity. Have 100% coverage and four weeks and IMO you'd have qualified candidates knocking on your door right quick.
