can16358p··on The future is not self-hosted, but self-sovereign
So if I follow 1000 people,

I make 1000 requests every time I open the app or refresh my feed?

Also not everyone can be on a stable connection with a public IP address with good upload speeds 7/24. In the ideal world: sure. In the real world: impossible (at least for any foreseeable near future).

can16358p··on What went wrong for Yahoo
Yahoo literally did every wrong move and turned every move that could make it become successful again down, almost as if it deliberate. I can't believe it still exists.
can16358p··on Users claim Discord's age verification can be tricked with video game characters
Am I the only one who sees website appear for a split second and become completely blank white?

(iOS Safari)

Okay turning off content blockers did the trick. AdGuard was blocking the whole site for some reason.

can16358p··on Steam, Itch.io are pulling ‘porn’ games. Critics say it's a slippery slope
Governments should educate people instead of outright banning things.

And in the case of addiction like drugs or gambling, instead of stigmatizing the victims, they should be there to support them.

Let people make their own decisions, not the government.

can16358p··on Do not download the app, use the website
Quora has been known for its dark patterns. At one point they didnt't show you a page if you clicked a link to it within their site and prompted to login, though if you copy paste the page link to a new tab it opened.

They've never had my trust, and never will.

can16358p··on Steam, Itch.io are pulling ‘porn’ games. Critics say it's a slippery slope
What is wrong with these people who try to block certain content?

Don't like porn? Don't buy it. Simple as that. No one, including governments or payment processors, should be in the position to decide whether a platform can sell something or not.

I wish there was a payment processor who was brave enough to say a big fucking NO to censorship.

can16358p··on Up to date prices for LLM APIs all in one place
Does anyone know why o1-pro is more expensive than o3-pro?
can16358p··on Games Look Bad: HDR and Tone Mapping
HDR is GREAT! Everyone trying to implement HDR + tone mapping excessively just for the sake of it and exaggerating it to show-off (just like those oversaturated Samsung phone screens) is not.
can16358p··on A valid HTML zip bomb
Crashing Safari on iOS (not technically crashing the whole app, but the tab displays internal WebKit error).
can16358p··on US AI Action Plan
> Removing Red Tape and Onerous Regulation

This is the sole reason EU will never, ever catch up in big tech unless they get rid of regulations.

can16358p··on Cops say criminals use a Google Pixel with GrapheneOS – I say that's freedom
Criminals use knives to stab people.

By the same logic, anyone who has a knife in their kitchen is a suspect.

can16358p··on I watched Gemini CLI hallucinate and delete my files
Having worked with both Sonnet and Gemini (latest of both) on Cursor (not max mode), I can say Sonnet is MUCH, MUCH better for almost everything.

Not to say that it won't accidentally delete some files that it shouldn't, but I'd trust it more than Gemini.

can16358p··on Allentown man said to have died in ICE custody is alive in Guatemala
Same.

Some webmasters are apparently stuck in 1990s.

can16358p··on Will the Fear of Being Confused for AI Mean That We Will Now Write Differently?
> Could there be anything more insulting for a writer than someone assuming that their writing is an output of generative artificial intelligence?

Not sure if this is a bad thing. AI uses very professional and correct language (unless otherwise instructed) with well-structured paragraphs. If a system can't distinguish my writing from AI, it means that I'm doing a great job as humans sometimes make typos and structural/grammatical errors and AI generally excels against those.

can16358p··on How to run an Arduino for years on a battery (2021)
Not loading for me either.

Otherwise great post, though I'd love to have seen the images!

can16358p··on Valve confirms credit card companies pressured it to delist certain adult games
I'll never understand what is these payment processors' problem with adult content.

If someone wants to sell something and someone else wants to buy something, it should be nobody else's business to police it as long as two parties are settled.

That's why I want to see crypto take over and get rid of the middleman and regulators.

can16358p··on AirPods succeed by not selling you a new pair
I've never used AirPods but I can say their microphones are awful: whenever I'm talking to someone who is on AirPods, I can immediately tell it from the very low audio quality. This happens with many, many people.

When they switch to their iPhone mic, it literally sounds like the audio version of upgrading from 144p to 4K.

can16358p··on The JPEG XL Image Coding History, Features, Coding Tools, Design Rationale
While I'm not the biggest fan of WebP, using generation loss as a metric wouldn't be an indicator of a real world scenario. I can't think of any actual instance where an image needs to be re-encoded, say, 10 times, let alone 100+ times.
can16358p··on Apple's MLX adding CUDA support
Unless one constantly browses Instagram or TikTok, they do.
can16358p··on Show HN: Ten years of running every day, visualized
Impressive.

A nice addition would be adding a switch for converting to non-American units though

can16358p··on 'Europe must ban American Big Tech and create a European Silicon Valley'
Sure, I'd love to use an open source model locally that's trained on fully ethically-sourced data... once it's on par with ChatGPT or Sonnet.

For now, that "crap" big tech throws at us outperforms the "non-crap".

I'd love to see competition though, K2 is a nice step.

can16358p··on 'Europe must ban American Big Tech and create a European Silicon Valley'
Basically everything around data in EU. Make one small "mistake" (which would be perfectly OK in SV) and you're done: millions in fines so you either go bankrupt or go to jail. Almost no one, naturally, wants to take risk.
can16358p··on 'Europe must ban American Big Tech and create a European Silicon Valley'
It means less data, and let's be realistic, under otherwise equal conditions, means less-accurate inference.

One can try it, but it will never be a fair game.

can16358p··on 'Europe must ban American Big Tech and create a European Silicon Valley'
I have no sympathy for US, and I know I'm going to be downvoted to hell from EU-conservatists, though: Don't expect anything comparable to US big tech with all those innovation-stifling regulations that EU has.

If Europe wants to do anything that can compete with US big tech, they should get rid of those regulations first.

can16358p··on Build an iOS app on Linux or Windows
It's a matter of taste then. As a fullstack dev I still end up loving how Xcode cleanly represents things visually even though I'm not using it much other than building step anymore.

I already could jump to other stuff if I didn't like it, the reason I kept using it because I simply liked the experience, at least to my personal taste of seeing things.

If you think having a different personal taste is "stockholm syndrome" I don't have much else to say though.

can16358p··on Build an iOS app on Linux or Windows
I don't use Xcode anymore in practice (Vscode+React Native here) yet back in the ObjC+storyboard days I loved storyboard and general expressiveness of Objective-C.

Sure it had quirks (codesigning issues, weird errors from underlying C-level calls, ObjC "primitives" bot playing nicely with C primitives without boxing etc.) but I generally loved the experience especially around WYSIWYG of storyboards.

can16358p··on LLM code generation may lead to an erosion of trust
Ironically, a blog post about judging for a practice uses terrible web practices: I'm on mobile and the layout is messed up, and Safari's reader mode crashes on this page for whatever reason.
can16358p··on Build an iOS app on Linux or Windows
Don't worry, those "idiots" are doing perfectly fine with great salaries and a nice developer experience who apparently figured out using archaic hardware for developing newer devices is practically pointless even if there were software support.
can16358p··on Show HN: Pipo360 – Generate production-ready back end APIs in 60 seconds with AI
So, the initial demo is nice but I'm wondering at what level of complexity does it start "breaking"/hallucinating and not start producing anything useful.

Having said that, tools like this are the future for sure!

can16358p··on Show HN: Meow – An Image File Format I made because PNGs and JPEGs suck for AI
Nice work!

Though I have one question: once 2 bits/channel are used with Meow-specific data thus leaving 6bits/channel, I doubt how it can still retain perfect image quality when either: (if everything's re-encoded) dynamic range is reduced by 75% or LSB changes introduce noise to the original image. Not too much noise, but still.
