calvinlh··on I will not exercise my Gitlab stock options (2017)
$4000 to exercise, but a lot more in taxes. Given that his shares were worth about 1/6 of what they are now, and assuming the FMV for tax purposes was about 1/3 that, he would have to pay income tax on $60k worth of paper gains. That's an additional 20-30k depending on the state.
calvinlh··on MongoDB Wire Protocol Specification License
If the "You may not use the material for commercial purposes" clause applies to the wire protocol itself, does MongoDB itself get an exception to that for Atlas/MongoDB Enterprise?
calvinlh··on Towing a Tesla at 70 MPH replenishes battery at fast charger rates
You're off by a factor of 3600-- 1 watt is a Joule/second, not a Joule/hour. 1 GJ / 1800s ~= 555kW, not 2GW.
calvinlh··on Berkshire Hathaway’s stock price is too high for Nasdaq computers
Yes, but that only stops you from claiming capital loss, you still pay taxes on gains
calvinlh··on Git partial clone lets you fetch only the large file you need
If you only want a subset of the repo's files, you can use Github's Subversion interface: https://stackoverflow.com/a/18194523
calvinlh··on Ask HN: What is likely to improve with 10/7nm CPUs?
According to this article on Wikipedia, it's a linear relationship: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CPU_power_dissipation

Edit: maybe this takes into account that when you increase frequency you might also have to increase the voltage to keep the processor stable, as well? But a 4th power effect seems quite extreme.

calvinlh··on CryptoKitties craze slows down transactions on Ethereum
https://www.google.com/search?q=2^256

You're off by about 68 orders of magnitude; it's 2^32 that's approximately 4 billion.

calvinlh··on Cruise is running an autonomous ride hailing service for employees in SF
There have been reports of drivers changing ratings retroactively after seeing their own rating drop, or if a customer doesn't tip.
calvinlh··on Can FPGAs Beat GPUs in Accelerating Next-Generation Deep Learning?
You can find engineering samples of the chips on Digikey: http://www.digikey.com/products/en?FV=ffecdb78&pkeyword=fpga

Looks like the cheapest one is $17k (so 15 Titan Xs? 24 1080Tis?), and I'd expect the price will be around that after full release.

calvinlh··on Snap Inc. S-1
Keep in mind it's highly unlikely that all of those employees are engineers, probably lots of sales/marketing/customer service people. Still, with benefits and stuff I'd estimate maybe 100k per on the low end.
calvinlh··on Lyft Loses $600M in 2016 as Revenue Rises to $700M
You can't, they're a private company. Can't short Uber either.
calvinlh··on Grokking Python 3’s str
Zed Shaw, author of Learn Python the Hard Way, thinks Python 3 strings are broken. He also needs to read this article.

calvinlh··on New technique stores summer heat until it's needed in winter
Who says that high profit implies high tech? Your Wikipedia link only says high tech often offers the potential for high profit.

Is the Large Hadron Collider not high tech if it doesn't turn a profit?

calvinlh··on Paper Centrifuge
Currently, there is absolutely no realistic way to set up the infrastructure required to operate such labs in third world countries. The costs would be astronomical.

While, yes, ideally all humans would receive the same high standard of healthcare, pragmatically it's just not going to happen anytime soon. Before that happens, this is a very useful (and clever) tool.

calvinlh··on I returned my 2016 MacBook Pro with Touch Bar
For him, the kicker was the battery life. How do you test battery life in the Apple store? You're not allowed to unplug the thing. (And even if you could, who's going to spend several hours there to assess the battery life?)

You also speak as if fast SSDs and replaceability are mutually exclusive. They're not—check out the specs of the Samsung 960 Pro: 3.5 GB/s read, 2.1 GB/s write.
