calt··on Artist releases album called “Ok Google Play Music” on Spotify
If this was good music I would applaud the ingenuity. However, it's handpan music, which I like, but it's so poorly recorded that it's... just wow. Bad. Lot's of annoying high end reverberation and a ground loop hum on one track I listened to.

And every track ends with vocals saying "this was drumkoon."

calt··on The Serverless Revolution Has Stalled
But are you including your own salary into that cost?

I believe he is comparing aws bills vs. engineer time+other hosting bills.

calt··on Abolish the Cash Bail System
I never said that the rich shouldn't be rich. I am implying that the poor shouldn't be held down. And I'm also arguing that having a healthy society with a functioning welfare system reduces crime and ultimately reduces these costs.

But I think that's besides the point on this particular issue. I can't imagine whatever costs you're imagining are involved in tracking down people skipping court dates would tax the rich out of their privilege.

calt··on Abolish the Cash Bail System
And thus the cycle of poverty continues and meritocracy descends into hereditary meritocracy, which isn't a meritocracy at all.

> I don't see how that money can be reclaimed except for the taxpayer covering it.

I see that the economic cost of perpetuating economic classes and the economic disruption of confinement without trial far outweigh this taxpayer cost. Taxpayers win when justice prevails.

This kind of extreme libertarian mindset just baffles me.

calt··on Ask HN: What's the worst piece of software you use everyday?
Syncing doesn't even need a server if the devices you're using are online at the same time.

I just switched to it from Dropbox.

calt··on Linux 5.8 Formally Adds the Inclusive Terminology Guidelines
>now we've fully embraced cancel culture

Is this cancel culture? No. No one is being canceled here.

> Oh, and I find subordinate offensive, just because.

Not good enough.

> Congratulations to the Linux kernel for fixing a systemic issue by changing some words,

No one claimed that.

> you can't post anything controversial anymore.

This isn't "controversial." It's snide and deliberately obtuse.

calt··on Container technologies at Coinbase: Why Kubernetes is not part of our stack
To me it looks like they saved quite a lot of engineering effort, and the price was lockin. Seems like it was probably a fair trade for them.

At least if it's sane and well thought out it can be taken back apart and repurposed for something different. There will be cost. Consider it paying back the loan. That's why it's called technical debt. The terms of the debt looks good to me.

calt··on Container technologies at Coinbase: Why Kubernetes is not part of our stack
Their system seems very sane. I'm jealous, and I hope it stays that way (sane, not static). It's also entirely dependent of features of AWS. I used to work for a company that had a very insane hybrid datacenter/aws deployment environment, and containers provided some sanity.

Service discovery, cluster management, secret storage, these are all problems that we _already_ had. Containers (for us on mesos) just solved some parts of that picture.

I lived and breathed containers, distributed systems, config management, deployment pipelines etc. for years, and I forget that to many K8s is just seen as one magic bullet solution. You will have to pick it apart and interact with pieces of it if you really want to use it at a medium sized company. That takes a lot of research and understanding.

calt··on We Only Hire the Trendiest (2016)
My university's career coaching always told us to dress at the level of the workplace + 1.

I think this is a good rule. You look good, but not awkwardly out of place. Perhaps it's an unfortunate social rule that we shouldn't have to follow, but I've learned to shrug my shoulder to a lot of such rules and just go with it.

This is still done. The incidental sounds you hear in movies are often (or almost entirely?) dubbed after the fact, and are not from the microphones on the filming set.
calt··on Stomach of Dead Whale Contained 'Nothing but Nonstop Plastic'
They got paid money to take the plastic off our hands and recycle it, not the other way around.
calt··on Making Bellwoods, a Generative Art Game in 13 Kb
That was fast. Thanks.

Also, the music and the birds are a nice progress indicator anyway.

calt··on Making Bellwoods, a Generative Art Game in 13 Kb
Really beautiful. A nice little palate cleanser of a game. Well done!

My only comment/complaint is that I wish I could turn off the rankings display. I understand that it provides the "level up" mechanic, but I long for the Zen of exploring for exploring sake... I suppose that longing is very anti Zen though. Haha

calt··on YouTube's tendency to push everyday users toward politically extreme content
You're misrepresenting the article.

It's not so much about taking the videos down, as the recommendation algorithms pushing people in the extremist direction.

calt··on How TripAdvisor Changed Travel
Hostelworld... ok so I'm probably not the demographic you're looking for answers from.

However, Booking.com is by far the world's largest hotel booking website.

calt··on IBM seeks $167M from Groupon in dispute over early internet patents
This isn't an isolated incident or new news. It's standard IBM at this point, and the world deserves to know.
calt··on People’s egos get bigger after meditation and yoga, says a new study
I see what you did there.

Meditation has boosted my ego, in some meanings of the word, and given me a sense of self worth. It's also taught me that everyone is interconnected and self is an illusion. Those two things go hands in hand to make me much more generous and giving than I used to be.... Still no saint though.

I think people lack the language or don't realize the two concepts of self-worth and non-self are sperate. The word ego just gets thrown around. "Oh yeah I have a tiny ego but great self esteem." == "I have a strong view of non-self and a huge ego."

calt··on People’s egos get bigger after meditation and yoga, says a new study
> I wonder, is this what ego means in Buddhism?

That's the correct question to ask, and the short answer is "no."

Non-self means that there is no sperate, unchanging self. You are a constantly changing phenomenon that has arisen due to causality.

You can see how the two might be correlated, but it's loose at best.

calt··on People’s egos get bigger after meditation and yoga, says a new study
The data is fascinating, but the conclusion that this is somehow apposed to Buddhism is just absurd. A healthy sense of self worth does not stand in the way of eliminating the view of a separate, persistent self for the betterment of all beings.

calt··on Has wine gone bad?
At that point they've often turned into a type of drinking vinegar which, believe it or not, often don't taste acidic at all.
calt··on Has wine gone bad?
I always thought that "notes of blank" was kind of silly until I saw this flavor wheel for coffee [0], and it clicked that tasters simply had a vocabulary that they tended to draw from because flavors are hard to describe.

calt··on How Social Media Exploits Our Moral Emotions
That makes me think a little bit differently about filter bubbles. Filter bubbles aren't new. They're just changing from physical proximity into ideological or emotional response (as best as an algorithm can tell) proximity.
calt··on It’s COBOL all the way down
Yes. I agree with this. Having command line and interactive terminal experience and actually programming your environment the more fundamental skill to have on mainframes.
calt··on It’s COBOL all the way down
Maybe you could mostly learn it on the job if they thought you had interest? I actually had an internship in COBOL with zero prior experience. They were hoping to convince some of us kids to give it a shot. In my experience it wasn't hard at all, but I'm not really sure what level I was operating at.
calt··on The emotions we feel may shape what we see
The article is about the methods of new studies that are attempting to quantify something that many - but not all - find intuitive. Yeah, there are bigger fish to fry, but I found it interesting.

calt··on Ask HN: How do you keep a good posture when you spend most of your type sitting?
I'll strongly disagree with this one. After a day of driving I regret it.

I don't own a car so o rent a variety of different ones. The headrest always forces my neck forward. The bucket shape of the seats closes my chest and causes shoulder issues.
