calflegal··on The impact of AI on the technical interview process
Aren't the LLMs also pretty decent code reviewers? Sure, not perfect, but the suggestion that we should use code review as the replacement for the coding challenge 'because AI' seems a bit misplaced...
calflegal··on Let's talk about animation quality
appreciate your position but mine is that everything out of suno sounds like copycat dog water.
calflegal··on Scrum's “Product Owner” Problem
> Most software businesses don’t need a bunch of Picassos, they need house painters with spray guns and buckets of off-white.

This is so good and yet so painful.

calflegal··on Ask HN: Ever hit a professional goal but felt surprised by your reaction?
I feel this one a lot. Working from the office these days feels like working from home from the office.
calflegal··on Ask HN: Platform for 11 year old to create video games?
Phaser with Claude / LLM to help?
calflegal··on AI can now master your music
Well, not all MIDI sounds bad. Have a listen to the Addictive Drummer demos for example. It can sound pretty damn good / real. Still, your point is well taken. MIDI guitar emulations for example are still pretty dang bad. One wonders if this is because a guitar is a more continuous vs discrete instrument compared to drums. Even with all of MIDI’s rich parameters, it’s pretty tough to describe pick angle, materials, etc.

Also, I wonder if there will be a natural “backlash” against generic AI music and towards stuff that has more human imperfection. But then again even the AI will learn to imitate the imperfections so what exactly will make a piece more human in the long run?

calflegal··on Show HN: Ladder, open source alternative to 12ft.io and 1ft.io
related: If this is how they work, why doesn't google offer a private service to allow publishers to have content indexed while still protected?
calflegal··on Ask HN: What's the most beautiful web game you've seen?
yo this rocks.
calflegal··on Ask HN: What's the most beautiful web game you've seen?
wow.
calflegal··on Galactica: an AI trained on humanity's scientific knowledge (by Meta)
Ha! I didn't see your comment when I just posted mine. Strange that we'd go there
calflegal··on Galactica: an AI trained on humanity's scientific knowledge (by Meta)
Question: How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

Answer: 1

calflegal··on What chords do you need?
Trouble with this sort of thing is the subjectivity of 'what chord is this?', taking into account inversions and the like. CMaj7 has C / E / G / B? Who says this isn't Emin6 with the 6th in the bass? It'll depend on the way it's heard and its context within the song, but many approaches can impact this sort of thing.

EDIT: I wrote this without carefully reading the article (oops!). Author does a great job with the "adjustments"...I suspect adjusting to relative minor covers a huge amount of these issues, and the author throws in mixolydian for good measure! There will always be edge cases, secondary dominants, modulations, blah blah blah, but I suspect adjusting to include relative minors handles the vast majority of popular music.

calflegal··on Etsy Strike
It's wild that one of the best e-shopping techniques is now googling "___ review reddit". We find ourselves playing a strange whack-a-mole game of trust amongst organizations.
calflegal··on Show HN: Building Paper Audio for Voice Speakers with Jovo, NestJS, and React
Paper Audio is my side project for building a community for musicians to share demos, including functionality to reach voice speakers like Alexa and Google Home. This post is a write up about some of the technical choices of the project.
calflegal··on Ask HN: Do you create music? let's hear it
I make something like indie pop rock. Somewhat sadly, my favorite song of mine is now 10 years old:

https://calvinflegal.bandcamp.com/track/when-you-were-around.

I more recently put a song on Spotify. I'm somewhat happy with it, but the vocal lacks confidence vs the first one imo:

Having critiqued myself as above, my next one will have a more confident vocal. Here's a tiny clip:

calflegal··on Show HN: SongMarkers – Explore moments in music and curate your own
SongMarkers is a tool for annotating moments in songs. It's a useful tool for learning guitar solos, but you can use it for whatever you'd like! Stack is React and Phoenix (Elixir).
calflegal··on Show HN: SongMarkers – An app to make loops and markers for songs on Spotify
Create markers in time, then jump to them and / or loop them. Great for learning sections while playing an instrument since it can operate hands-free. Desktop Chrome or Firefox only for now, since that's what the Spotify web playback API supports.
calflegal··on Get started making music
If you're an iOS user, I highly recommend the "Music Memos" Apple App that nobody talks about. Pretty great. Even better if you were to get something like the Rode iXY to go with it!
calflegal··on Get started making music
This is a really great answer! This is also a big part of why different instruments read different clefs.
calflegal··on Get started making music
I didn't mean personal offense in my reply. "Stop pretending making music is clicking on and off in little boxes", is the specific portion I was referring to, but more generally I just aim to promote inclusiveness.
calflegal··on Get started making music
The timing of this post is funny, as just this week I launched a little ear training game built with React an Tone.js: https://www.notetuning.com/
calflegal··on Get started making music
I feel the need to address some of the typical HN poison floating around. I've got a very expensive music education. It doesn't make me better than an "Ableton clicker". Music is open to anybody, and is defined by what moves one, not by the mechanism of its creation. America really tends to treat it as some exclusive art club (beyond required elementary school classes), and that's really just wrong.
calflegal··on Show HN: NoteTuning – A music game built with React
This is a little ear training game I built with React, Tone.js, MobX, and D3. Enjoy!
