cake··on Reverse Engineering US Airline's PNR System and Accessing All Reservations
Any tips on how to define the rate limits for a web app with moderate traffic? For logged and anonymous users?
cake··on Ask HN: Ever lost your love for coding? How did you get it back?
Same here, what I loved about the web was the immediacy. You edited 2-3 files and you were done!

Today I had to work with Angular, this thing is insane. So many files, so many layers, so slow... This thing makes me hate what I do.

I wish web dev took a different direction towards more simplicity.

cake··on TripAdvisor cuts hundreds of jobs after Google competition bites
Yes trip advisor has become irrelevant, in the beginning you could rely on the ratings. Now almost everyone has 4+ stars.

I find Google ratings slighly better.

cake··on Raspberry Pi Car Speed Detector
Or just remotely send yourself a photo of your parking lot.
cake··on Segway robot
Meh, I was trying to find an actual usage of this robot. I guess even Segway has no idea what to do with it.
cake··on The first person to hack the iPhone is building a self-driving car
Yes, holy shit does it look unsafe !

There's a good reason began on closed courses, imagine a kernel panic locking the car on a busy freeway...

cake··on Email made me miserable, so I decided to build my own email app from scratch
I have no problems with it either. It is highly customizable and you can do pretty much what you want to do with so many email clients.

I'm guessing these are just people that don't know about filters and how to unsubscribe from unwanted mail.

cake··on OS X 10.11 El Capitan: Review
Same here, Yosemite is the new Windows Vista ! I'm finally stable enough with 10.10.4 after many kernel panics, not gonna rush it to upgrade. I'll wait for 10.11.1.

El capitan seems promising though.

cake··on Apple Unveils the iPad Pro
I agree, so much useless stuff here. Long gone are the days when Apple produced powerful and exciting new Macs. Now they are catching up and behind... I think my next computer will be a PC again.
cake··on Google didn’t lead the self-driving vehicle revolution, John Deere did
Nothing new here : http://mining.sandvik.com/en/products/equipment/mine-automat...
cake··on Disassembling the Amazon Dash
I see Dash more like an experiment, it may not be the final product or disapear completely to become something else.

Even if I find this idea wasteful, I think amazon does the right move with just experimenting.

cake··on Why Waze is so popular in Costa Rica (2014)
Pretty sad that they contributed hundred of hours of their time that they could lose any second if Google decided to ditch Waze.

Openstreetmaps allows you to download all the data for free.

cake··on Photos Preview
iPhoto is so slow, I hope they fixed that ! Even on my SSD i7 mbp with 16GB of RAM I'm surprised. My photo collection isn't that huge as most of the stuff is stored outside but it really lacks the snapiness it should have.
cake··on Why Every Movie Looks Sort of Orange and Blue
Those priceonomics guys really care for their SEO. They are one of the few websites that writes totally unrelated articles to sell a product.

I kind of feel used when I see them pop up.

cake··on CotEditor – Text Editor for OS X
True, it can be a real pain if your environment slightly differs from the developper. I just give up most of the time if I have to compile myself.
cake··on OS X 10.10 Yosemite: The Ars Technica Review
I have a Displayport<-->DVI adapter and that thing never works as intended.

Sometimes it won't detect the screen, so I have to unplug and plug it back again. If the screen is off the Macbook thinks there's still a second screen...

They really botched that thing.

cake··on Firefox 33
I switched back to Firefox recently from Chrome. I find Firefox faster too.

Chrome is losing focus on what was making it great : ultralight and fast.

I'd ditch Chrome if Firefox had full html5 video support on OS X.

cake··on Art project: Train rats to trade markets
Seeing it's an art project, I see the "rat race" analogy.
cake··on Hard Drive Reliability Update – Sep 2014
I wish there was something similar for SSDs.
cake··on How to Beat High Airfares (2011)
That's why the tips felt so irrelevant.

Last time I checked booking two tickets made no difference, kayak and all are all well known and I hope that everyone checks at least if there's not a cheaper alternative with these. Usually I can't find anything that I didn't know about, maybe it's because the number of airlines is diminushing every year.

I must also add that I hate those people coming with huge bags, filling the overhead bins as advised in the article. There's no room in the cabin, the old lady won't be able to lift it on her own or you'll get the bag in the face because she's not carefull. In my opinion only backpacks and laptops bags should be allowed, the way it used to be (not so old man rant).

cake··on Google Keep
If you have some kind of hosting, it's your duty to either code your own Google Keep or find some open source project.

No reason to depend on Google for this kind of stuff. They'll probably ditch it at some point anyway.

cake··on Welcome to the public AS/400
That's my experience too, it's mostly basic CRUD interfaces. People say it's fast but that's because it gives you the most barebones user-hostile interface you could have.

The company paid IBM $100k to upgrade a single server and this shit is locked with licences for cores and memory. It's not even that fast.

The problem is they are too deep in it now but this shit needs to die.

cake··on Welcome to the public AS/400
Wow no idea why someone would need that, I have to work with an AS/400 and let me tell you it's no fun !
cake··on NPR One
Broken for me too on the second dot, I can't scroll more and have to click on a dot.

I really dislike this new "Powerpoint slide" presentation trend.

cake··on Candy Japan crosses $10K MRR
Yes I assumed a 300 flat rate from the previous comment, but you're right he mentions 10% in his post.
cake··on Candy Japan crosses $10K MRR
Shit I just spent an hour researching this !

Something was fishy in your inequation here is my result :

3x > 3x+(1000-x-300)

So this means that at x > 700 it is profitable to send empty enveloppes.

cake··on Inter IKEA Systems BV called me
No shit, IKEA should hire this person just for the free marketing that it constitutes.
cake··on Alfred and OS X 10.10 Yosemite
From what I can see, it looks like Spotlight is becoming smarter and closer to alfred than ever. It dosen't look like the dumb file finder they seem to present it to be.
cake··on Simkl: It’s Time to Build a Better TV, Anime, Movie Watchlist and Tracker
At first I thought it was about a torrent tracker...
cake··on Ack is a grep-like tool, optimised for programmers
I couldn't live without this tool today, very useful to quickly find where that method is used for example.
