cake··on Volvo’s first self-driving cars now being tested live on public roads in Sweden
Actually it does exist but is rarely used : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All-way_stop

In Europe you can have ambiguous situations with the priority to the right, where you are supposed to be courteous and wave the driver if both (or more) have the right of way.

cake··on The latest chapter for the self-driving car: mastering city street driving
It really looks like the cyclist is a tester.

I agree, most cyclist don't signal at all, sometimes they will just subtly point with their finger.

Not the best idea to rely on the cyclist's signals.

cake··on Apple retires Snow Leopard from support, leaves 20% Macs vulnerable to attacks
Snow Leopard is still the best OS X I know (now being on Mountain Lion), it was fast and efficient.

It still works wonders on the old Core 2 Duo and I wouldn't upgrade any of the older machines I have.

cake··on High-Speed Trading Isn't About Efficiency—It's About Cheating
A quick Googling reveals that some people do use algobot to talk about HFT software.

I guess it's a dumbed down idea to sell to the masses.

cake··on Ask HN: Software Engineer Salaries in Berlin
Ohh I have a few questions for you :

What did you do in CA ?

What was your salary and how would it compare in France ?

cake··on Poll: Full-time software engineer salaries in Berlin
3 points for "€100k or more" already sounds like bullshit to me at this time.

Either that or I would love to hear what you do !

cake··on Money and wealth
Man I'm in the same boat, I'm renting a house and it can be such a pain in the ass sometimes. It's a good anxiety enhancer for me ;-)

Loads of work to make the property a good rental and then it's also loads of work to get the good tenants (especally in the beginning).

Now that they are settled I have more leeway but I know that more work is coming next.

As you said I would also recommend rentals to people that can either dedicate big chunks of time to it or to get it managed by someone else (by the risk of losing quite a big deal).

I don't know if I would do this again, sometimes I think I should have put the money in stocks and be done with it.

cake··on Reverse-engineering Instagram to access the private API
So what can you do ? You can't fight the private key retrieval right ?
cake··on OS X 10.9 Mavericks: The Ars Technica Review
Yeah I'm stuck on os 10.6 because really nothing entices me in the next versions.

I really wonder sometimes if Apple is not slowly dropping OS X in favor of iOS.

cake··on NYTimes's Pogue going to Yahoo
This is big news, Pogue was/is one of the most important tech writer in my own opinion. He has a good approach of dumbing down tech products for the average joe despite beeing very knowledgeable.

I guess it is showing a shift from Yahoo to be a quality content producer.

cake··on HTML5 Video First
I decided to uninstall flash on my work computer (pc win 7) a while ago.

I occasionally watch Youtube videos and it's getting better and better with time, I sometimes have to switch to chrome because some of the videos are not encoded for html5 but I would really recommend to ditch flash player and not be bothered by the constant updates anymore.

cake··on A Year and a Half With a Nissan Leaf (Part 1): The Acquisition
but can my experience only add value if I critique the shortcomings

Not necessarily only the shortcomings, I was thinking critical as in "analytical", I would have love to read about how the EV experience translated driving out of the dealership for example. It may not be new to you but I've never driven one and would have "extracted value" out of your post if you did describe it ;-)

cake··on A Year and a Half With a Nissan Leaf (Part 1): The Acquisition
No offence intended but I don't see the value of your experience buying a Leaf. To me it lacks a critical opinion, thus looking more like free advertising.
cake··on A Year and a Half With a Nissan Leaf (Part 1): The Acquisition
Sounds an awful lot like a free ad for the leaf.
cake··on Switching from Gmail to FastMail
Google sure is getting bad press lately !
cake··on Use "Amazon 1 Button" Chrome extension to sniff all HTTPS websites
Then why would they state : "The Amazon Browser Apps may also collect information about the websites you view"
cake··on Ask HN: How does one create a fake identity?
I'm curious as to why you would ask such a question. It reminds me of this book that I haven't read but might answer some of your interrogations : http://kk.org/cooltools/archives/11678
cake··on Google paid AdBlock Plus to get its ads whitelisted
And don't forget to support the websites that you visit the most by whitelisting them.
cake··on Show HN: Radio - My first Mac app
Looks very similar to Radium : http://catpigstudios.com/
cake··on Poll: Which RSS reader have you switched to?
You should a "self made" option.
cake··on Apple Announces Mac OS X 'Mavericks'
Yes or https://lastpass.com/ encrypted and free. Works wonders.
cake··on Mac Pro
Good point, I haven't seen any logo. Maybe it's still in the works and will later.
cake··on Tesla Model S Suspension Walkaround
Pretty amazing yet totally normal not to see any exhaust system that I'm used to see on every car ;-)
cake··on Hacker News Redesign
It does by making important elements stand out (such as author, comments...). Bigger arrow which is sometimes tricky to hit.

The colors kinda kills the eyes though.

cake··on Waiting for a 1TB SSD below $1 per GB?
most of the time

All the crashes I've read about on the web were fatal failures with total data loss. I hope it'll get better.

cake··on tmux 1.8 Released
I switched from screen to tmux to screen back again.

tmux seemed slower while switching windows, plus I like the simplicity of screen.

cake··on Issue 224182 - chromium - Chrome wakes me up in the middle of the night
I had the same problem, now I use https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/stop-autoplay-for-... so that if I open a tab in the background I don't have to manually pause the Youtube video or I if restore a chrome session like you said.
cake··on The Summly deal makes no sense
I'm pretty sure that he is not the only person accountable for the sale. I would even guess that's it is far from it. He's backed up by many people as someone said in the comments.

Can you actually sign any of these papers if you're a minor ?

cake··on Google Reader Alternatives
What I like about Reader is the speed.

Newsblur feels slow and bloated and of all the RSS readers I have tried it was the best.

So now I just said fuck it and I'm working on my own reader using much of the work from http://rsslounge.aditu.de/

cake··on (Presumably) Apple engineer comment on Lightning AV adapter design
Man, a computer in a cable seems like such a waste and complex design.

What's the point of doing so ? I don't get it.
