cainetighe··on When did Google get so weird?
Hey, I'm Caine from DuckDuckGo. I appreciate you advocating for us. Just one thing to clear up is that we just use Bing, that's a myth.

We are significantly more than that at this point, including that we've been working on our own web index for the past two years (https://insideduckduckgo.substack.com/p/duck-tales-why-duckd...).

But on top of that we don't get local results, knowledge graph, answers, sports, anything AI related, and many more essential modules from Bing, all of which collectively makes up a large % of the results at this point, let alone the vastly different UXs.

Hope that helps.

Hey there, Caine from DuckDuckGo here. I understand why you might think this, but it's a myth.

cainetighe··on I'm losing the SEO battle for my own open source project
This should now be done on organics and search assist. Thanks again!
cainetighe··on I'm losing the SEO battle for my own open source project
SearchAssist is fixed, organics are taking a bit longer. Thanks again for the report, we should hopefully have the latter resolved by EoD.

We can fix this quickly at DuckDuckGo, and we will for organics. I suspect part of the problem is I am seeing a TLS issue with the nanoclaw.dev site.
cainetighe··on DuckDuckGo Goodies
Goodies on the goodies page represent all of the available instant answer types (async API calls, functions, DB full text, and DB keyword).
cainetighe··on DuckDuckGo Goodies
DuckDuckHack is a major component of DuckDuckGo's future. It's great when developers, well versed in an answer space, come in and make a goodie because the value spreads across the user base. As DDH grows, it will be neat to think of as a standard library for future contributors to work with. For example a mortgage specific calculator leveraging the generic calculator.

Would it help if, like the previous "Try this search on code, we primed the !bang autocomplete with site searches well represented in the results?
cainetighe··on The next version of DuckDuckGo
We originally prototyped videos with several providers including Vimeo, YouTube, and DailyMotion. Sadly there was an immediate (and difficult) safe search problem and we decided to table re-enabling the others until after we got some feedback about how it worked.
cainetighe··on The next version of DuckDuckGo
A new iOS app is on the way to complement the redesign.

Confirm fixed?
cainetighe··on The next version of DuckDuckGo
We were on the fence about autocomplete for a variety of reasons, but tried to be careful about minimizing distraction. It was too great a vector to introduce !bang autocomplete :). As always, please let us know what you think as it evolves!
cainetighe··on The next version of DuckDuckGo
Cool! We always received a fair amount of feedback about better local search and the redesign attempts to plug a few holes. Any feedback would be great; we're just getting started!
cainetighe··on On not hiring (2011)
A lot of our employees don't use LinkedIn. A leadership / core team page is on the horizon, but we've been working on cooler / product stuff :). As others have said, we're ~20 people; ~75% remote. I think our unique approach to hiring (inbound / sparingly) has helped us form an excellent team where, once a core team member is added, trust is just built-in. I can't stress enough how important that is to delivering on our mission with a small team.
cainetighe··on DuckDuckGo launches Search & Stories app
It's not a filter bubble because by default everyone sees the exact same content, just like our Web search results. We decided early on to filter out things like rape, dismemberment, etc. that we thought were staunchly negative. Also, this app wasn't designed to be a traditional news reader. Instead it features interesting content that's currently being shared a lot regardless of publish date.
cainetighe··on DuckDuckGo launches Search & Stories app
Stories are showcased from over 50 carefully selected sources that focus on different types of content. For example, TIME and BBC are there, but so are Reddit Funny and BuzzFeed. We also aggressively prevent depressing and duplicate stories from appearing in the feed.

Thanks for the feedback. We take the ability to search fast very seriously. There are a few home screen options in the app -- just look at the settings. Also our mobile web site is still accessible and maybe preferred over the app altogether.

You mean wrap them in <a href>?

In addition to the mixed content issue on Chrome, I've pushed out a fix for the tab completion component. It too inherently suffers from mixed content because our autocomplete server only does HTTP at the moment.

Please let us know if you see anymore issues.

This should be fixed. Sorry about that.

I've pushed some changes out for this. I'd appreciate if you could confirm it works as expected now.
cainetighe··on Ask HN: Who Is Hiring? (September 2012)
We are looking for iOS hackers too.
cainetighe··on Why I use DuckDuckGo and You Should Too
was safe-search on? you shouldn't have gotten the Wikipedia zero-click if it was on. please let us know.
cainetighe··on We Need a New Google.
We recently integrated Yelp into Zero-Click. You can check it out here: http://duckduckgo.com/?q=black+lab+bistro. Also get's handled on mobile.
cainetighe··on Firefox 8 beta gets Twitter search straight from the browser
@darkduck - There must be some kind of misunderstanding here. I've got the latest source and we're nowhere to be found.

[nil@tmbg ~/mozilla-central]$ grep -r duckduckgo . [nil@tmbg ~/mozilla-central]$

Furthermore, the list of the default / available plugins can be found here: http://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/file/a896a9e237a0/brow....

If you have any information about the future of this, we would be really excited and interested to know, but we would appreciate a screenshot or a link to verify. I expect you have DuckDuckGo in your search list from before (thanks!) and the new installations are just picking up on that in the preferences directories generated upon install.

cainetighe··on Inbound Hiring
I would say that it's mostly based on the culture you cultivate for your brand and yourself. In Gabe's post he mentioned Initech, the company from the movie Office Space, because it represents the quintessentially shitty corporately inundated fortune 50 company. Consequently, when I think of FOSS programmers, their job is either to work on this FOSS project (hired by yahoo to work on freebsd), or they're unfulfilled by their current job and use FOSS as a way to be creative and enjoy their craft. Prolific people are driven by obsession (my opinion); so even if they use that to make ends meat, it's not the end of the line for their work.
cainetighe··on Inbound Hiring
Thanks! I had a good idea about the company from the get go, so wasn't really concerned. I was still in college when I started donating my time to DuckDuckGo and never dreamed of ever being fiscally reliant on it. I am very used to contributing to FOSS projects since it's how I learned to code which fit right into the DDG culture. I guess what I'm really trying to say is that even if DDG flipped in 6 months I wouldn't be in any worse shape since I was consulting while donating time to DDG. It's just great to work for something you believe in that challenges you everyday. Gabriel's concept of Inbound Hiring comes with an Hors d'œuvre of sink or swim culture. I think this is a good thing; especially where we are at now. Thanks again!
