cageface··on What does it mean that MP3 is free?
The next update to my player is going to support Opus. It would be nice if it was better supported by the OS though.

cageface··on Go Is a Well-Designed Language
I think SwiftUI is to blame. In order to make a nice terse DSL for WWDC talks they really contorted the language design.
cageface··on An update on Dart macros and data serialization
It takes a minute to build from scratch or to update when running "build_runner watch"? My app is over 40k lines and watch updates almost instantaneously.
cageface··on An update on Dart macros and data serialization
They exist but they're still missing a lot of things you'd want in a data class like copyWith, serialization etc.

In practice in a Dart app you usually use freezed or something similar: https://pub.dev/packages/freezed

You could even say that overconfidence in abilities and knowledge outside of core expertise is the critical flaw of today's entire tech industry.
cageface··on Knowing less about AI makes people more open to using it
The vast numbers of low income vegetarians in India would no doubt find this argument very novel.
cageface··on Ask HN: Is anyone making money selling traditional downloadable software?
Looks like Native Instruments is pushing a subscription too:

cageface··on Ask HN: Is anyone making money selling traditional downloadable software?
Logic Pro iPad is a subscription. It remains to be seen if the desktop version goes this way.

Reason is pushing a subscription model hard.

Online services like Splice are sub based for sounds & samples.

Bitwig is a yearly fee. You don't have to upgrade but you're probably going to have issues with newer OS versions before long if you don't.

Overall I agree it's sill a better space than most for software you actually can own.

cageface··on Ask HN: Is anyone making money selling traditional downloadable software?
Unfortunately even in this area there is now a strong push towards subscription models.
cageface··on The Origins of Wokeness
My respect for PG and the rest of the leadership of the tech world unfortunately seem to be headed off the same cliff.

The arrogance and lack of empathy is so disappointing and so unnecessary. Please try harder. A lot is at stake here.

cageface··on Apple squandered the Holy Grail
Depends on where you live. In SE Asia it's useless.
cageface··on Apple squandered the Holy Grail
I was unhappy with the state of music players on macOS too so I wrote my own:

cageface··on Spotify is full of AI music
I agree. In fact I built my own music player to support this on Mac because I wasn't happy with the existing apps:

Bandcamp seems to have survived changing ownership and is still a good service. More specialized e-tailers like boomkat and bleep are also good for some genres.
cageface··on Rails is better low code than low code
restrained and thoughtful in its use is exactly how I expect people to not use these tools. Copy and paste and push the commit is more like it.

cageface··on Lessons from 15 Years of Indie App Development
Have you found the extra work to also sell on windows to have been justified by the sales on that platform?
cageface··on Electrobun: Cross-platform desktop applications written in TypeScript
One of my favorite things about Tauri is that I can write all the "back end" code in Rust. I think this has a lot of advantages for performance and correctness. For that reason alone I'm more inclined to reach for it than Electron or something like this when I have options.
cageface··on Blender 4.3
Of course there are still categories of app that should be native. That doesn’t mean there isn’t a place for things like Tauri and Electron too.
cageface··on OpenAI, Google and Anthropic are struggling to build more advanced AI
I find specific blog posts ChatGPT is cribbing from all the time when I use it. I think it depends a lot on exactly what you're asking it for.
cageface··on LLMs have reached a point of diminishing returns
The thing that limits my use of these tools is that it massively disrupts my mental flow to shift from coding to prompting and debugging the generated code.

For self-contained tasks that aren't that complex they can save a lot of time but for features that require careful integration into a complex architecture I find them more than useless in their current state.

cageface··on Show HN: Tinder, but to decide what to eat
The subject of this particular app isn't the point. It's the economics of the app business in general.
cageface··on Show HN: Tinder, but to decide what to eat
This is the unfortunate reality of the app business today. Without constant ad spend it's very very difficult to acquire new users. And constant ad spend is of course not possible with a low one-time payment for the app.

Yeah agree about the flip flops. Especially when you step one of the sidewalk tiles that gushes out a big spout of not very clean water.
cageface··on Direct Sockets API in Chrome 131
That's definitely one of the best looking Qt apps I've seen.
cageface··on Direct Sockets API in Chrome 131
The cross platform desktop gui toolkits all have some very big downsides and tend to result in bad looking UIs too.

I've just learned not to leave the house without an umbrella during the rainy season.
cageface··on Rewrite It in Rails
This is my experience as well. Rails makes it incredibly easy to get a web app off the ground but as it grows and adds more features and complex business logic it becomes much more difficult to maintain than a codebase with static type checking.

It’s worthless in Thailand. I was checking it last week with a Thai friend here in Bangkok. The forecast was clear skies while in fact we had an epic monsoon storm.

This is typical here.

cageface··on Rider is now free for non-commercial use
In fact I only use Apple Silicon macs, where the issue is still quite evident.
