cabaalis··on Don’t rely on contact-tracing apps
The US health system is not well positioned for command-and-control from a centralized source. This has various advantages and disadvantages, but is a severe hindrance in a pandemic.

There wasn't even a unified diagnosis code for COVID until April 1, and that required a herculean effort and a shirking of normal coding update processes. There were various guidances for coding, but identifying diagnosis in structured data for fast analysis was a difficult ask. (I know this to be true, I've done it across the health records of millions of patients.)

I'm sure some fault lies in the administration, but my belief is that our health system is systemically unable to properly deal with widespread pandemic, especially from a newly discovered illness.

That's one of those trade-offs that have to be considered when looking at how health care in the US should be handled in the future.

cabaalis··on Debt Collectors Are Transforming the Business of State Courts
I assume you're talking about RIP Medical Debt. As I've found success in the healthcare technology industry, they were IMO a good choice for a portion of a recent windfall. I recommend donating to them as well!
cabaalis··on The San Francisco Bay Area shelter-in-place order is being extended through May
Thank you, this was very helpful. Also glad to see a link to my alma mater.
cabaalis··on The San Francisco Bay Area shelter-in-place order is being extended through May
> there are laws which give these powers

IANAL, but I know some of you are so I'm asking here. I've read that challenges to these orders will not succeed because of emergency declarations. The emergency declarations are supposedly backed by some law, correct?

Don't we have a document in the national archives that guarantees things like peaceable assembly and not prohibiting exercise of religion? Yet we have people being arrested or cited for assembling, and pastors being put under arrest for holding church? Is it the temporary nature that allows this to be done?

Regarding the law that allows this kind of stuff, how does that compare to a constitution which says "congress shall make no law ..."?

cabaalis··on Study: No evidence of efficacy of hydroxychloroquine in hospitalized patients
A proven successful use of this drug would be very inconvenient for multiple media outlets who jumped at the (described as) unfounded claim. It would mean that either (a) the authorities had more information than they did, or that (b) the authorities bet successfully with the same amount of information, which doesn't align with their constant reporting of idiocy.
cabaalis··on Firefox 75.0
Geez. I wish they would ask for permission to do this. They'll just get every day "Default Browser: generally not Firefox." What they are doing here is one method to keep it that way.
cabaalis··on Ask HN: How do you update multiple disparate databases?
Not sure why this would turn you off to an organization as this is a very common problem.

My money is on your suggestion being what most organizations actually do, though perhaps with a workflow process to manage it.

Legacy systems are hard.

cabaalis··on The Board reduced reserve requirement ratios to zero percent effective March 26
I am no economist. What is being solved here? Allowing loans? Who will take out loans in the economy as it is?

I'd think a reserve at the banks is a good protection of solvency, and should be increased instead of decreased. Is my layman interpretation completely wrong? It feels like they ran out of bullets and have thrown the gun.

cabaalis··on Archivists are uploading hundreds of random VHS tapes to the internet
Three (edit:Two) full seasons of Salute Your Shorts makes this very much worth it.
cabaalis··on Archivists are uploading hundreds of random VHS tapes to the internet
The best part about RLM's Best of the Worst is that they all seem to hate doing it. There was one episode where they got terribly drunk and had to stop filming and come back a few days later.
cabaalis··on Cloudflare silently deleted my DNS records
Did I say anything about C-suite? Your point is nearly word for word the same as mine, I'm not sure why you're replying as a refutation.
cabaalis··on Cloudflare silently deleted my DNS records
You may be right, but knowing "who's who" is very largely how general business gets done. Buying services over the internet from an anonymous black box with no support is a recent disruption.
cabaalis··on AB2712 – California Universal Basic Income
States solving their own problems. If it's also properly funded by the state, it's the way it should be.
cabaalis··on Bloomberg bankrolls a social-media army
I see this also for Bernie, in odd locations. I've been playing Warcraft 3 reforged lately, and the general chat that shows up on the main menu in-game has been all kinds of people extolling the values of Bernie Sanders.

Of course, it could be grassroots. I just doubt it.

cabaalis··on Defacto: Factorio-like game in the browser for the PICO-8
Playing in mobile with the Gameboy-like interface is a joy :)
cabaalis··on I had to get a background check for my job; the report is a 300 page pdf
I don't think I did. There are misses due to bad algorithm. And yet some of the tweets highlighted are indicative of a highly toxic mindset.

I do want to live in a world where statements akin to "shut up you f'ing boomer" can be tied to the person who holds or appreciates that value.

cabaalis··on I had to get a background check for my job; the report is a 300 page pdf
It seems against the grain on this board, but people actually think airing all their little annoyances publicly online is a good idea that will never affect their actual lives?
cabaalis··on The word “mafia” is never heard in The Godfather
Another thing I never thought I'd see on HN, Gomer Pyle, USMC.

I didn't exist in the original airings, but Nick @ Nite and TV Land gave me all those awesome shows when I was a kid. Dick Van Dyke, I Love Lucy, Bob Newhart, Rhoda, Mary Tyler Moore, Taxi, The Munsters, Happy Days. The list goes on and on.

cabaalis··on Congrats! Web scraping is legal! (US precedent)
> perhaps the owner of the site has a case.

Except it sounds like the owner doesn't. If the information is on the page made public, the owner of the page can't place terms on what is done with the data downstream. They'd have to implement some real binding system such as authentication where CFAA would apply. (IANAL)

cabaalis··on List of Twitter mute words for your timeline
I don't use twitter much but it does feel cleaner with these in place.

I'm assuming though that this is a technicality of implementation. Since it changes their preferred experience, I can't imagine these keywords will remain available to block.

cabaalis··on Master of Orion
Aside from some simple BASIC, I can attribute the beginning of my development career to being a kid playing with the text-based config files of Civ 1.
cabaalis··on How to Kill a Startup Idea with Google Keyword Planner and AdWords: A Case Study
This is very useful insight that I want to apply to my own planned side-projects (like 30-something domains registered as ideas...) Too often I've thought "that's a great idea" and then focused on the tech of implementation rather than the viability.

At that point it's just a hobby, or skill-sharpening exercise.

Regarding the example shown, I would think that "uber for" ideas (meaning facilitate a connection between service provider X with service need-er Y, take a commission on the transaction) sound as though possibilities are unlimited. However the reality may be that not everything can be disrupted in this way.

cabaalis··on Every Google result now looks like an ad
It's Bing. I've noticed the slightly lower quality.

It's something of a conscious choice: unfettered tracking and advertising practices but good search results, or less tracking and OK results with profits used for a cause.

cabaalis··on Every Google result now looks like an ad
I like DDG, but have been using Ecosia for the past 6 months or so. I like that I've contributed to planting 25 trees (by the averages) just in my normal course of searching.
cabaalis··on DigitalOcean is laying off staff
Your read is probably more practical than mine, and fits in better with a "don't assume malice" standpoint. I just know that social media (of which HN is begrudgingly a member) can very effectively be swayed.
cabaalis··on DigitalOcean is laying off staff
Curious.. does your employment agreement not put you at very, very significant personal risk for putting information out like this? Throwaway account or not?

I'm inclined to trust HN and it's community to a pretty strong degree. But forgive me for simply not seeing this as anything but controlled information release.

cabaalis··on 3D Buzz is shutting down
I never thought I'd see Dickson, TN mentioned on HN. If you're around the area you should visit the Renaissance Center. I remember it mostly from the planetarium when I was a kid.
cabaalis··on Most frequently checked-out books in the history of the New York Public Library
I knew I recognized his name, so I looked him up. Turns out that his book Louie was one of my absolute favorites as a kid.
cabaalis··on I Was Google’s Head of International Relations. Here’s Why I Left
> No longer can massive tech companies like Google be permitted to operate relatively free from government oversight.

It seems to me that if the actions you take are legal, it doesn't matter your size. Who is the government to decide what's too big to operate without their input?

cabaalis··on 23andMe licenses its own drug compound to Spanish firm Almirall
At least in the US, doing this would already be illegal.
