c0nducktr··on How to make housing more affordable
Most of the country is empty space.
c0nducktr··on Murder rate rose by almost 30% in 2020 in the US
And yet that party is still preferable to the alternative, according to the voters. Funny how that goes.
c0nducktr··on China declares cryptocurrency deals ‘illegal’
The climate is unlikely to be fine, regardless of whether or not crypto mining is banned. At this point we're just affecting just how bad it's going to get.
c0nducktr··on Belgian ISP under 250 Gbps DDoS for days on end
I had heard that Hola was possibly some kind of malware, but this is the first I'm hearing that Honey (I'm assuming we're both talking about the coupon-code extension) is like that too.

I just figured Honey was kind of like spyware, collecting information about what people bought online.

c0nducktr··on Facebook bans German anti-lockdown accounts under new ‘social harm’ policy
You do realize that people eat deer? And other livestock? Is it not a leading hypothesis that the origin of COVID-19 was an animal market? If it exists in the surrounding environment that's not "elimination". There will always be a risk of an outbreak.

How many people are eating raw deer? Do you have evidence of spread of covid-19 from deer to people?

> "It's impossible to contain, therefore we should approach it as a harm mitigation problem, rather than a candidate for 'elimination', through vaccination, not dystopian lockdowns and restrictions"

Why not both, (as long as you don't include the word 'dystopian' which is clearly just an emotional word). Vaccination and restrictions can work together to address the pandemic.

If you're implying mandatory vaccinations, sure. But when you've got a percentage of the population not willing to be vaccinated, if that percentage of the population is high enough to overwhelm our hospitals, restrictions make sense.

> We've tested and found covid-positive white-tailed deer all over New York state. Presumably there are other animal reservoirs.

Do you regularly interact with white-tailed deer in confined spaces?

> We now know that the vaccines widely available (at least those used in the US, Israel, the UK) have waning effectiveness, likely requiring periodic boosters.

What's wrong with a vaccine needing boosters? Many do.

> We also know those vaccines are non-sterilizing, meaning it is at least possible for fully vaccinated individuals to contract and transmit the virus.

Even more reason for people to be vaccinated. It keeps them out of the hospital.

Even assuming vaccine mandates in perpetuity, and widespread compliance, there will presumably be some overlap of "lapsed effectiveness" in the population between boosters. We literally don't have the capacity to administer boosters to all 200 million American adults exactly at the same instant, or even in the same month.

> Even assuming vaccine mandates in perpetuity, and widespread compliance, there will presumably be some overlap of "lapsed effectiveness" in the population between boosters.

Lapsed effectiveness isn't something that prohibits us from containing the virus

> We literally don't have the capacity to administer boosters to all 200 million American adults exactly at the same instant, or even in the same month.

It's honestly pretty sad that you think we couldn't do this. Have Americans really gotten that lazy?

> How exactly we are going to "eliminate" covid, given this reality? Many Americans are terrified that the goal is "elimination" of the virus. Similar to the War on Terror, wherein we did a tremendous amount of collateral damage chasing an endless, unattainable ideal.

I'm not sure what to say to this. "We don't care to contain it, therefore its' impossible to contain"?

>because locked-down people consume more Facebook.

Do they?

If it's all about the money, my guess would be Facebook has lost out on ad revenue, because a lot of the ad payers don't have customers.

There's still a third possibility, they're making some moral decision, although that's hard for me to believe given the company's past decisions. Maybe the lost revenue has made them make a moral decision?

It could always be a combination of these reasons, and I'm sure there's others I haven't accounted for.

c0nducktr··on Young People Are Anxious About Climate Change, Say Governments Are Failing Them
> > When I was in elementary school (also early 90's) we were taught that

Do you think that your educators were climate scientists? Maybe you just had educators which misestimated the reports of actual scientists.

Is a grade-school teacher supposed to understand climate forecasting?

You're an adult. You should have realized by now that your grade school teachers didn't actually know everything about everything.

c0nducktr··on 9/11 Material Released in Response to Executive Order 14040
I'm not familiar with any of these people or groups. Why is this a "pass"?
c0nducktr··on OSHA to require employers with 100 employees vaccinate or test workforce
Well it's not a very convincing argument
c0nducktr··on OSHA to require employers with 100 employees vaccinate or test workforce
Would you, if one was required to not get polio? What argument are you even making?
c0nducktr··on ERs backed up with ivermectin overdosers while gunshot victims wait: Oklahoma DR
My point is that the people in the hospitals are truly taking livestock dewormer. Regardless if the active compound of what they’re consuming is Ivermectin, they’re taking horse drugs.

I’ve seen a lot of people doing this “gotcha” correction regarding its use for humans, which while true, doesn’t change the fact we have a bunch of people taking horse medicine.

c0nducktr··on ERs backed up with ivermectin overdosers while gunshot victims wait: Oklahoma DR
Please stop spreading misinformation.

The people in hospital are not taking Ivermectin as prescribed by a physician. They're buying horse dewormer and dosing themselves.

It's ridiculous to treat them as the same thing. I truly cannot believe you are incapable of seeing the difference.

c0nducktr··on ERs backed up with ivermectin overdosers while gunshot victims wait: Oklahoma DR
Hospitals are not currently being overwhelmed by either of your theoreticals. Those things aren't the issue right now, and if you would like to revisit that, should suicide from pills or DUI related crashes become an issue, I'd love to discuss it further.
c0nducktr··on ERs backed up with ivermectin overdosers while gunshot victims wait: Oklahoma DR
I think if someone chooses to poison themself, they should be triaged below someone who didn't choose to poison themselves, should the need to triage patients occur.
c0nducktr··on China has forbidden under-18s from playing games for more than three hours/week
I recall back during the early days of the "war on terror" Afghanistan war / Iraq war, there were statements that terrorists were using WoW servers for planning attacks lol

Edit: Found a story about it - https://www.wired.com/2008/09/world-of-warcra/

> Toavs, for one, believes that spies will have to spend more time in virtual worlds like WoW, if they want to have a hope of keeping tabs on what goes on inside 'em. Which means, some day soon, we might find secret agents in World of Warcraft, along with the druids and orcs and night elves.

Truly absurd. Sounds to me like someone at the CIA just wants to play WoW instead of working.

c0nducktr··on Train Wheels Are Cones
meta meta observation: You commented rather early in the posts history. Currently garbagetime's posts is near the bottom, while 3pt14159's is at the top.

How many posts were there at the time of writing? Did your comment influence the subsequent voting? Would garbagetime have been naturally downvoted if given enough time? Is hacker news actually declining in quality, or is it just tendency to favor good things when remembering the past?

Does any of this matter at all?

c0nducktr··on Discord has won over gamers. Now it wants everybody else
I'm pretty happy with the interface, with a couple exceptions:

1) I'd like to be able to collapse, or reposition, the right panel (the one with the users in it).

2) I'd like to be able to have multiple channels open at once. This one is probably my biggest complaint. It's frustrating having to frequently click back and forth between different channels in a server.

I'm sure I could find more things to complain about if those were resolved, but those two changes would make me content with the UI.

Give me some other themes too, I suppose. Maybe a really dark one.

c0nducktr··on Beware of 'shrinkflation,' inflation's devious cousin
Similarly, there's a chemical - sodium tripolyphosphate - which some producers add to scallops, that causes them to absorb more moisture so they can sell you fewer at the same price, as they're also sold by weight.

c0nducktr··on US set for punishing temperatures as ‘heat dome’ to settle over country
Sorry bud, but it's not "unthoughtful" to discount your opinions. I, and apparently a good percentage of the site, have considered them, found them fruitless, and tire of the arguments.

Your beliefs are incorrect. You can think what you want of course, but there comes a point where nobody needs to care what you say.

c0nducktr··on China bans for-profit school tutoring in sweeping overhaul
> Once regarded as a sure-fire way for aspiring children (and parents) to get ahead, after-school tutoring is now viewed as an impediment to one of Xi Jinping’s top priorities: boosting a declining birth rate.

I'd like to know where this explanation is coming from. Is that something that the CCP actually stated somewhere, or is the the author assuming?

c0nducktr··on Why won’t Americans get vaccinated?
> Edit: I have had Covid as-well as everyone in my family.

Yeah, no surprise there lol

Thanks for beta-testing covid-19 for us though.

c0nducktr··on My take on the study from MIT that predicts “societal collapse”
I'd take that bet.
c0nducktr··on Minimum wage workers can't afford rent anywhere in America
Sounds like the startup is the problem here, not the employee.
c0nducktr··on Senate Unanimously Approves a Bill to Make Juneteenth a Public Holiday
Could you not have both?

I'm not certain how mail-in ballots are counted currently, but it is certainly possible to have the ballots be in a sleeve, and the ballot itself only be exposed to the machine reading it. Put the ballot 'inserters' under camera if needed. It seems like a simple problem to solve.

Another commenter mentioned that a real issue is that the counting of ballots isn't transparent, which is true. When I vote, all I know is that the ballot scanner increments its 'scanned ballot' count. I can't verify that it actually voted for who I voted for, and they're closed source, so I have to rely on someone else's word that they are.

Maybe this is finally a use for blockchain? lol

c0nducktr··on In Mexico, cartels are hunting down police at their homes
This is absolutely wild. I had watched that video earlier, and assumed it was a car transporting cash.

Someone should start a drone cellphone delivery business for South Africa. It's hard to understand people putting their lives on the line like that to deliver cell phones.

c0nducktr··on A six figure meme making job at a legit company
Apparently women can't meme /s. I can't wait to read their medium post detailing this problem lol

Edit: motohagiography, your post has been flagged, so I can't reply to you, but if you want to elaborate on your post, please feel free to use this as a jumping-off point.

You've made a big claim, I'm hoping you can back it up.

c0nducktr··on No safe level of alcohol for brain health: observational cohort study [pdf]
That might work, I'm interested in this one specifically because in the article that was added, the person reviewing it said it made them feel tipsy-drunk, but never more than that, which sounds absolutely ideal for me.

I do wonder how much is due to the claimed GABA uptake enhancement from the ingredients and how much of that would be attributed to placebo though.
