c0nducktr··on Huawei prepares to split from Android on consumer devices with HarmonyOS Next
> The economy is in perilous shape

I've heard their economy is in perilous shape for years now. The people speaking of the 'coming collapse of china's economy' seem just like perma-bears here.

These assumptions have shown to be wrong, time and time again, but surely the collapse is coming right, if we believe hard enough?

How exactly did they violate the license?
c0nducktr··on Cloudflare employee posts layoff call with HR and goes viral [video]
There was no empathy here, only generic HR platitudes. "Your opinion is valid", etc.

That's not empathy.

c0nducktr··on Cloudflare employee posts layoff call with HR and goes viral [video]
Many horrible people are 'just doing their jobs'. Think about it a little longer before justifying a persons actions, or assuming they're above repute.
c0nducktr··on Cloudflare employee posts layoff call with HR and goes viral [video]
Takeaway seems to be if you receive an invite from a rando HR person, decline that meeting.

Edit: Also PR speak is one of the most unbecoming things I've heard in my life. I know there's HR people here in this thread, so to them: Try to at least act like your human.

c0nducktr··on China Says It Cracked Apple AirDrop to Identify Message Sources
> If it's true and they cracked it, it would mean the final major way Chinese residents can share information outside of government control is gone.

Airdrop was the final way? That sounds unlikely. With iPhone marketshare in China at like 20% I would be surprised if it was even the current primary way, let alone the only way.

c0nducktr··on iPhone that fell from hole in Alaska 737 MAX flight is found, still open to Mail
They're trolling you dude. Their first comment was just a joke, but people bought in, and now you're being trolled, like in the original sense.
c0nducktr··on Maersk ship hit by missile in the Red Sea
The US War in Iraq was not due to misinformation. Misinformation may have sold it to the public, but to give the people responsible for that war a pass, as if they were just mislead, is .. well it's just covering for their actions.
c0nducktr··on California Pizza Hut Lays Off Delivery Drivers Amid New Wage Law
DoorDash really seems to be the way tech has brought enshittification to restaurants. I'd love for it to revert soon, but I feel it'll get far worse before it gets any better.
c0nducktr··on Shein forces Amazon to lower seller fees
I live within a half mile of a distribution center, and I've had missed 1 day delivery targets.

Going on the comments on a reddit thread isn't a good way of understanding what's actually happening in the world.

Without some kind of submission statement, I'm not sure what we're supposed to be discussing here.

Most of the population has no real control! Are you new here?
c0nducktr··on Methane under the seabed is thawing as oceans warm
This comment seems like it follows the standard path of all people who never wanted to address climate change.

   "Global Warming doesn't exist"
"Sure it exists, but humans are not responsible"
"Well sure, it's human made, but we can't do anything about it now"
Every single move just is a reason to not do anything which might inconvenience the current order. I'm very tired of it.
c0nducktr··on Map: The states in favor of daylight saving time all year long
> If you look at who supports and lobbies for savings time it should be clear who the enemy is.

I honestly don't know who lobbies for this. Care to help me out?

c0nducktr··on Does HN have an archive of its flagged threads?
If something immediately drops off the front page/is hidden, it's the same is it never being posted. Hard to interact with something which doesn't seem to exist.
c0nducktr··on I have a custom domain, what's your guys favorite email provider
I use fastmail.com. The pricing is alright, and it works well enough for me.

You might get better answers if you mentioned what you were specifically looking for in a provider.

c0nducktr··on Mastercard Should Stop Selling Our Data
In the US today, it's been my experience that if a business accepts credit cards, Visa, MC, Amex and Discover are all accepted. Costco would be the exception that proves the rule. This has been the case since I started using credit cards, maybe 10 years ago.

Does anyone know when this changed? I don't think I've just been lucky this entire time.

Edit: When traveling overseas, I've always just used VISA though, but that's just because I have a card without foreign transaction fees with them.

Sure, or we could make a law which prevents this kind of mixing of notifications.

I, as a consumer would appreciate this.

c0nducktr··on AI-Powered Mock Interviews: The Next Evolution or Just Another Gimmick?
I would find an AI conducted interview demeaning, and giving it a face wouldn't change my opinion in the slightest.
c0nducktr··on Microsoft has not stopped forcing Edge on Windows 11 users
It's the same thing, just one company has taken it further. I realize this is a slippery slope argument, but when there are countless examples of how this slopes is slippery, I think it's a valid point of contention.
c0nducktr··on Google Maps Testing New Apple Maps-Inspired Map Style
I agree 100%. I use Apple Maps for navigation but Google Maps is so much better for discovery of places. It's the only reason I keep it installed, tbh. My "places to go" is contained within Google Maps, just because they have so much more data.

It's wild to me that Apple hasn't spun off their own reviews system yet. Relying on Yelp in 2023 seems foolish.

c0nducktr··on Firefox desktop extensions coming soon for the upcoming Android release
No worries.

Are you able to set Firefox as the default browser for Android for the whole phone? For instance, if I clicked on a link in an app, would uBlock Origin filter everything loaded? i.e, the app loaded the page in the same app, can I have that rendering engine set to Firefox with Ublock?

Edit: Sorry for anyone reading this, I know I'm using the wrong terms, hopefully you know what I mean.

c0nducktr··on Firefox desktop extensions coming soon for the upcoming Android release
Edit: btw, I had originally upvoted them, even though their original statement was a little rude, and now flagged off the page (I think).
c0nducktr··on Firefox desktop extensions coming soon for the upcoming Android release

If this directed at me, well, I didn't downvote anybody. I saw the parent post being downvoted a bunch, and wanted to know what they were talking about.

I don't currently have an Android phone. Having a better browser is one of the few things which would want me to move from iOS.

It was an honest question.
