c-hendricks··on Git Submodules as a Package Manager
> Typescript/Javascript notwithstanding

Also, gulp / grunt weren't package managers.

c-hendricks··on SteamdDB Joins Nexus Mods
Try quoting the full line, not just the part that scares you:

> Uploading content deemed illegal by English law (indecent depictions of minors)

c-hendricks··on Claude Session URL appended to commit messages and PR descriptions by default
> Did you want to see my slack messages to my mentor too?

Are they relevant questions? I've often commented on lines of code in a PR that "so and so gave me the idea".

> Or how about all the stack overflows I read?

Would be nice to link to them either in a code comment (if they're not changed very much) or again somewhere in the PR discussion

> Maybe I should voice record all the times I swore about Gary the junior dev not documenting something?

If you noticed something severely lacking that would help other people out if that wasn't the case then yes I hope you would bring it up?

c-hendricks··on Storm Summoner, a MIDI controller for effects pedals
Oh, ok thanks for the explanation, I can see the utility of it there. I thought it was more like "hey here's a stompbox but you can't stomp it and we switched those pesky knobs with a touch-senstive surface like cars did and everyone hates".

All without a DAW too I'm guessing? I use an FCB-1010 for a lot of things but yeah it's obviously pretty useless without a DAW.

c-hendricks··on Storm Summoner, a MIDI controller for effects pedals
Watched the video but don't really see why the title mentions pedals. This is decidedly not a pedal. A neat interface for sure, but not a pedal you can stomp.
c-hendricks··on The Weed Got Too Strong
> if older weeds were half as "strong", the user could just smoke 2x as much and become just as high as with newer weeds

I'm definitely not versed enough in this, but I don't think 9 women can make a baby in one month in this scenario.

> But vapes give micro doses

My vape pen can absolutely incapacitate me from a single hoot, the user is in control of the dosage.

c-hendricks··on Hollywood's Video Game Era Is Here. Will It Be Any Good?
I'll defend Uwe Boll's Postal movie. It's on par with the source material at least.

And IIRC Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge was a fun time.

c-hendricks··on Anthropic's War on open source AI
It's much worse than Reddit, but yes Reddit is getting worse by the day.
c-hendricks··on GitHub down again? no PR access
It sounds like what I was seeing when trying to view PRs last night, so it started almost 12 hours ago.
c-hendricks··on RustDesk now supports true unattended remote access on Wayland
Yes this will give you similar results.

There's VNC and VNC-likes (rdp, steam link, rustdesk, etc) which all do similar: stream a screen, allow remote keyboard/mouse, maybe redirect sound, maybe use video encoders.

There's also things like deskflow, which allow you to use one keyboard/mouse and control with multiple machines.

c-hendricks··on DeepSeek Harness
yep, it's a handy architecture. Tho I don't know many people who prefer to run without coreutils.
c-hendricks··on uBlock Origin Is Giving Up the Fight to Keep Ads Off Facebook
Going from memory, but that's how many elements are in the tree between what I wanted to be hidden and where the matching text/elements actually lived.
c-hendricks··on uBlock Origin is giving up the fight to keep ads off Facebook
Last I tried writing custom rules for Facebook was years ago, but they did have proper aria attributes, and uBlock origin does have selectors for text content. These are from 2020:

  facebook.com##span:has-text(Suggested for You):xpath(../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../..)
  facebook.com##div[aria-label="Sponsored"] span[aria-label="Sponsored"]:xpath(../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../..)
  facebook.com##div[aria-label="Sponsored"]:xpath(../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../..)
c-hendricks··on OpenAI's new device will be hockey puck-sized and cost over $300
You absolutely can just press a button on a phone to instantly start an AI voice conversation. Heck, you don't even need to press a button in a lot of cases.
c-hendricks··on Prime Agent: A self-improving RLM agent

Probably best to leave YandereDev's code out of the training data.

c-hendricks··on Our position on open-weights models
Frankly, why would I put much weight into what Anthropic say about open weight models?
c-hendricks··on Systemd Linger
What I don't get is why (on Arch) I have linger off yet have never had trouble with tmux/ zellij being killed.

Edit: ah, this post clears it up. Mentions linger has nothing to do with screen muxers, and also brings KillUserProcesses to peoples attention.

Damn systemd and its multiple levels of convenience.

c-hendricks··on The Fedora 45 Sausage Factory
> No, it is not my choice, because I'm not talking about my PC at home, but rather what organizations use - commercial companies, universities, schools, NGOs etc

How much of a say do you have over the minutiae choices of various organizations anyways?

> I want only the people who explicitly prefer systemd, to use systemd, and not the rest

And some those people that prefer systemd happen to have a lot of influence on the choices for what init system a distro uses.

Maybe we could build something that lets us convert between different init systems to ease the maintenance burden. We'd need a structured format to start from, I wonder what options are out there...

c-hendricks··on The Fedora 45 Sausage Factory
Personally I think moving away from the hodgepodge of scripts, giving a consistent interface for people to use, extend, etc, is kinda necessary for the average user to have a decent system. It can often be complex to make things simple.

I'm also not sure how systemd could override a config file, because systemd does not write the unit files on a system. Wouldn't that be on the maintainer, distro, or other methods of getting the unit file?

c-hendricks··on When is NVLink worth it?
"Supported" it sure, but I'm dubious of the "70%" increase. It was very dependent on the game being played, and the CPU being used.
c-hendricks··on When is NVLink worth it?
Wasn't that actually a very short lived period of time? Especially with gains up to 70%, and you had to contend with new stutters?

c-hendricks··on How Our Rust-to-Zig Rewrite Is Going
I always got a kick out of that, coming from a JavaScript background where people constantly harp on the size of node modules.

My Tauri project, where the backend is much smaller code-wise than the frontend, has 9gb of rust artifacts (node_modules is 550mb for comparison)
