bvinc··on Gemini 4 Argon
I’m not op. But I think it’s not Carbon itself that is absurd.

It’s absurd to think that Carbon is the solution to memory safety when rust exists and Carbon’s memory safety story is basically “TBD”.

bvinc··on Meta reaches $17B settlement over social media harms to children
I found a good solution. In the YouTube settings you can turn off your watch history. It’ll want you that your recommendations will not be as good. You can watch a YouTube short, but when you try to scroll to the next one, it’ll tell you that there is no next video because watch history is not enabled.
bvinc··on City council passes bill enabling tenants to report vacant apartments
I read this entire article but I’m still confused. What exactly is the financial motivation for keeping units empty? And is the concern the fact that the units are empty or are they concerned about the conditions of the empty units?
bvinc··on Fixing for loops in Go 1.22
“Love-hate relationship” were the exact words that I used when I used go professionally every day.

I could complain all day about things the language does obviously wrong, often in the name of simplicity. But after all my complaints I still admit it’s a very good choice for certain kinds of software and software companies.

bvinc··on Understanding the power of bitwise operators

bvinc··on Some personal news
I don’t remember NYT. But I recall the other major poll site Real Clear Politics had an election map with a percentage chance for each state and they had Hillary at 99%.

Their mistake was that they treated each state as an independent event. Treating each state as a separate biased coin toss leads you to put Hillary at 99%.

Nate knew that these are not independent events and if republicans are being under polled in one state, it is more likely they’re being under polled in all of the states.

bvinc··on Just Simply – Stop saying how simple things are in our docs
I see “blocklist” becoming more popular in programming. But it just occurred to me how bizarre and out of place it would be if the parent comment said “a blocklisted word”.
bvinc··on Remove “This incident will be reported.” from user warnings
This sounds like an xwindows thing. The way popup menu windows work in x, is the program grabs all keyboard and mouse events.
bvinc··on Quicssh: SSH over QUIC
Has someone made a faithful representation of ssh over quic? You could use quic’s built in certificates and multiple streams of data and create something very similar to ssh. Is anyone doing that?
bvinc··on U.S. Postal Service starts nationwide electric vehicle fleet, buying 9,250 EVs
My wife thinks they’re cute.
bvinc··on Roald Dahl: Original books to be kept in print following criticism
To be more clear, here is a quote from another article

> The company said it would publish 17 of the author's books in their original form as The Roald Dahl Classic Collection along with the planned edited versions so "readers will be free to choose which version of Dahl's stories they prefer."

To me, it feels like a way to quell anger but still proceed forward and possibly even make money. I bet that the “classic” editions will be quietly discontinued in a few years.

bvinc··on StarFighter 16 inch: 4K Coreboot/Ryzen Linux laptop
Why did they feel the need to move the backslash key?
bvinc··on Ask HN: Someone is proxy-mirroring my website, can I do anything?
Might I suggest a spin on this: instead of blocking the IPs, consider serving up different content to those IPs.

You could make a page that shames their domain name for stealing content. You could make a redirect page that redirects people to your website. Or you could make a page with absolutely disgusting content. I think it would discourage them from playing the cat and mouse game with you and fixing it by getting new IPs.

bvinc··on Using a date-modified header to detect unique visitors without using cookies
What’s to stop someone from sending unique last-modified dates to uniquely fingerprint browsers?
bvinc··on Signal Introduces Stories
Is this one step closer towards signal being TikTok?
bvinc··on Big Tech has always had a firing problem
This article is crazy.

Basically, big tech is a god, a fairy tale, a delusion, pushing unnecessary technology on all of us, and praying on poor tech workers by dangling stocks in front of them, and having big problems with racism and sexism. And now that there are layoffs, everything should be clear now that Silicon Valley is all a giant lie.

This guy is unhinged from reality.

bvinc··on Tool beeps every time data is sent to Google
Make a version that uses different frequencies for different major companies.
bvinc··on Sorting algorithms visualized using the Blender Python API
People just use whatever their programming language provides. There's a concept of sorting "stability" in which equal elements stay in their original order relative to each other. If stability is important, then usually some variant of merge sort is used. If it's not, then some variant of quick sort is used. If the list, or sublist you're working with is small enough, insertion sort is used.
bvinc··on Tell HN: I was permanently banned from eBay in one hour
This is every company that deals with fraud of some sort. They collect evidence. Once evidence is damning enough, they ban, without giving any information. If they were to give out their evidence, then their evidence collection methods would become known and would no longer be effective.

Furthermore, even when they get it right, people who were banned correctly come on to the internet to complain.

But sometimes they get it wrong. And the only recourse seems to be a public shaming online.

bvinc··on Why do you waste so much time on the internet?
Everyone else replying to you is trying to convince you with arguments that reddit isn't a good use of your time. As you already know, this won't work. You're already convinced.

The only thing that works is a site blocker. It actually works. Convince yourself that the block is permanent. Delete the app. This of course won't completely stop you, because you could always unblock yourself. But it'll stop you from mindlessly pulling up reddit.

bvinc··on We fixed f-string typos in popular Python repos
So they checked 666 python repositories and fixed bugs in 69 of them. Interesting choice of numbers.
bvinc··on The Uselessness of Phenylephrine
In those cases, Claritin and Zyrtec are allergy medicines. The -D indicates that this allergy medicine comes along with a decongestant. The version without the -D will just be the allergy medicine.
bvinc··on Evaluating necessity of Covid-19 vaccination in previously infected individuals
This is really good news. Whenever I see people talking about if previously infected people should be vaccinated, they always mention how we don't know how long protection lasts for previously infected people. This study includes this section:

    Duration of protection

This study was not specifically designed to determine the duration of protection afforded by natural infection, but for the previously infected subjects the median duration since prior infection was 143 days (IQR 76 – 179 days), and no one had SARS-CoV-2 infection over the following five months, suggesting that SARS-CoV-2 infection may provide protection against reinfection for 10 months or longer.
bvinc··on If you sell a house these days, the buyer might be a pension fund
The conspiracy, which was not mentioned in this thread, but is all over youtube and twitter, is that the WEF is somehow going to reset everyone's wealth to zero and enact communism.

A video where futurists predict that you'll rent almost everything instead of buying it, isn't the same thing as evidence that the WEF is enacting communism.

Let's try to be clear about the nuance and details of what we're talking about.

bvinc··on Over twenty subreddits have gone private
Here's what I did, I put up roadblocks to mindless browsing: Use firefox nightly on android and do the hackery required to install arbitrary extensions, and install the "Request Blocker" extension. Block all browsing front pages, /r/all /r/popular /r/pics or whichever subreddit you want to block yourself from.

    *://*.reddit.com/r/all/
    *://*.reddit.com/r/popular/
    *://*.reddit.com/
Also do this on your desktop machines.

Also, I use old reddit on my desktop, and I use ublock origin to remove the entire bar of links at the top.

    www.reddit.com###sr-header-area
These blocks are permanent. If I run across an important link on reddit from a google search, or someone sends me a link, I can view it. But what I can't do, is browse the front page or dumb subreddits.
bvinc··on Griddy Is Shutting Down
I always thought this was a good idea for a company. Almost all of the electricity providers in Texas all buy energy at wholesale prices and lock customers into long term contracts. If you were an electricity provider, what would be the best plan that you would want for yourself and your friends? My answer to that would be to have access to buy energy at the cheap wholesale prices for a flat monthly fee. This seems to be the griddy model and I almost switched to them.

It's a good thing that I didn't because griddy customers are the ones that got multi-thousand dollar electricity bills after the recent Texas disaster.

bvinc··on Maybe we shouldn't want a fully decentralized web
> I find it disturbing that people have stopped supporting free speech when they stopped liking its content.

You're misunderstanding the argument. The argument isn't that they don't like the content. The argument is that it's a net-negative to society, and possibly an extreme-negative.

bvinc··on TOML – Tom's Obvious, Minimal Language
It's used often in rust. Rust crates are configured with toml files.
bvinc··on We didn't encrypt your password, we hashed it
Someone should mention that one time that a leaked password database from Adobe was actually encrypted, instead of hashed.

It lead to this XCKD comic:
