butterbomb··on The Age Verification Trap: Verifying age undermines everyone's data protection
> If you want to leave your kids completely unable to find any kind of gainful employment in the AI era, be my guest.

Your kid is screwed either way. Unless he moves to India.

> I know this is weird, but I'm in some ways not really sure who is on the side of freedom here. I get your position, but like.

No one. You’ll see a few politicians and more individuals stuck to their principles, but anyone with major clout sees the writing on the wall and is simply working to entrench their power.

> Better the nanny state than Nanny Zuck.

Indeed, what lolberts fail to understand usually is not a choice between government vs “freedom” it’s a choice between the current government and whoever will fill up the power vacuum left by the government.

> Claiming that an immensely powerful being demands obedience of you, and keeps tabs on you all the time, but his orders only go through a chosen few, was a hard proposition to begin with.

You just described what Silicon Valley wants to build lol

butterbomb··on Silicon Valley can't import talent like before. So it's exporting jobs
> silicon valley will lose its engine and the next major tech companies will be overseas.

Good god, we may just be able to save America!

> less bootcamp grads and more people with a background in OS and algos.

I’m going to wager at least one reason for this is Israel is big in industries that demand that sort of knowledge where in the US, most money was made by CRUD monkeys putting together high level line of business applications.

butterbomb··on FCC asks stations for "pro-America" programming, like daily Pledge of Allegiance
> I think the Christian Nationalists have overplayed their hand and revealed that their belief is politics takes priority over religion. Going back to the pre-1954 pledge is feasible within our lifetime.

Overplayed their hand? They’re reaching mainstream appeal now. There’s a whole religious revival around young zoomers but it’s a bit strange. A few months back I noticed the rage bait algorithms had my feeds looking like the 30 years war.

Probably the elite pedophiles who are getting away with this relatively consequence free.
butterbomb··on Trump's global tariffs struck down by US Supreme Court
> Great news for people who had to bend over backwards pretending this disruptive, nakedly corrupt behavior was "good, actually."

Actually they’re still doing it. I saw it not 2 minutes after seeing this post initially. The justifications for why they were “good, actually” has gotten increasingly vague though.

Best we can do is a couple dozen golden parachutes.

butterbomb··on Child's Play: Tech's new generation and the end of thinking
This became clear to me over the last few years. We are quickly returning to a world of entrenched social hierarchy where there are lords and peasants and little room even for social mobility.

With the corpse of meritocracy too rotted to deny at this point the elite simply seem to have run out of lies for placating the people.

Or, more likely the people are so sickeningly impotent, that’s there’s no need for the lies anymore. The new aristocracy will prevail over liberalism and everything the west lied of being part of the their values for years.

People don’t believe me when I tell them that there’s a large portion of even the American population that will happily accept the simplicity and safety of serfdom.

They know. That’s why they’re investing in things like land and building castles. They know the future they’ve designed. They’re already laying the foundation needed to win total power.

Parrot “user-agency” all you want. We’ve seen what outsourcing solutions to “user-agency” does.

Over half the population lacks the self stewardship to not eat themselves into being a fat pig. If “user-agency” was any sort of solution, I wouldn’t be paying for the negative externalities of all you fat fucks.

butterbomb··on Unprecedented 'Jobless Boom' Tests Limits of US Economic Expansion
> What will the economy consist of when there are no more paychecks?

I’m suspecting something like Soylent Green, but perhaps with more proactive action taken to free up resources by removal of masses who are no longer producing enough value to justify their expenses.

Following up, I believe eventually it will all be replaced by something much more resembling feudal power. Where bound servants provide service labor in exchange for protection/survival. Something like fuedalism but without the agricultural focus of manorialism.

butterbomb··on Can a Computer Science Student Be Taught to Design Hardware?
> Software pays better, which is why so many hardware people switched

Something I noticed years ago browsing jobs in random large companies:

hardware or anything close to hardware (firmware, driver dev, etc.) was all outsourced. Every single job I saw in that domain was in India or China/Taiwan.

High level software jobs (e.g. node.js developer to develop the web front end for some hardware device) were still in the US.

I’ve wondered if thats impacted why so many hardware people ran off to software.

butterbomb··on Can a Computer Science Student Be Taught to Design Hardware?
I knew a guy who was a digital verification engineer for intel. He was unceremoniously laid off and ended up taking work doing some sort of compliance at a very low paying state agency I was a developer at.

Pretty sharp guy, we worked together a few times on problems far outside both our responsibilities/domain. I always wondered why he ended up taking that gig. Must have been horrible doing compliance work on what was likely at least a 100% pay cut.
