burnt_toast··on 1.7M Hondas are being investigated for phantom braking
+1

Unexpected surprises can be dangerous. I feel like safety related systems really should be as simple as possible.

I like ABS but in one of my vehicles I had an issue with it randomly engaging when it shouldn't due to rusted and cracked tone rings. It's actually pretty scary losing the majority of your braking power when you desperately need it.

burnt_toast··on Elevator.js (2015)
Loved the audio. I thought this was a serious library and was wondering why anyone would use it for something so simple until it started to play music.
burnt_toast··on Facebook staff now to be known as “Metamates”
Nah he's just living in some alternative reality. A virtual one perhaps
burnt_toast··on The Beanie Baby Bubble of '99
I've been hoping someone would make a satirical beanie baby nft website.
burnt_toast··on Anyone else feel the constant urge to leave the field and become a plumber?
I left software shortly after college to start an auto detailer business due to not liking the job. 3 years later, I'm back in software and couldn't be happier.

Sometimes you can't appreciate the good aspects until you're missing them.

burnt_toast··on Home-built Bugatti replica [video]
Wow, sorry to hear you went through that. I do a lot of metal fab (hobbyist) and that is basically my worst nightmare.
burnt_toast··on Please make a dumb car
The only thing I don't like about crank windows is it's hard to roll down the passenger window while driving.

I've actually got 2 cars with crank windows and am in the process of converting one of them to power windows just because it doesn't have AC and I want an easier way to manage the windows.

burnt_toast··on Ask HN: Are there any 4K “dumb” televisions?
I'm optimistic within 5-10 years we'll start to see the rise of open source tvs that'll save us. I have no sources to back this up but seeing the release of several open source laptops gives me hope.
burnt_toast··on OpenLGTV: Legal reverse engineering and research of LG TVs firmware
Warranty doesn't mean much to me. I'm an outlier who enjoys repairing their own devices. I recently repaired a week old laptop that arrived faulty (trackpad was messed up) instead of mailing it back.

I'd only cut the antennas in a last case scenario. It's more likely they'd have a connector or I'd try to de-solder them first.

burnt_toast··on OpenLGTV: Legal reverse engineering and research of LG TVs firmware
If it comes to that point I will open my devices and cut the antennas
burnt_toast··on The Framework Laptop Is Great for a Linux-Friendly, Upgradeable/Modular Laptop
Thank you for posting this! I run linux on two XPS 15s and I love them but after manually repairing one and not being able to easily find parts for it it left me a little salty. My next laptop will most definitely be a framework one!

Your second point about the swappable ports finally made me realize it's not a gimmick. I don't know why but I think just because it's different I was a little apprehensive about it. The thought of being able to reconfigure it to avoid a dongle or hub is great.

burnt_toast··on How my genius roommate changed my perspective
I think this is a lot more common than we realize. I've noticed some men as they age seem to prefer DIY solutions over pre-bought solutions. I think it might be a mix of enjoyment, or self-satisfaction from coming up with a new solution, or remnants of an old habit they developed out of necessity when younger.

I live in a rural area myself and it's not unusual to see a pick up truck with DIY elements on them such as a wood bed rack, or wood bed cap. Usually this is a dead give away of an older gentlemen driving it. My parents own a pick up truck that had an older gentleman as a previous owner and it has a DIY wooden center console in it as it did not come with one from the factory. Ford sells a center console as an option for some of them but I guess he preferred to build his own.

I fear this will be me in 40 years.

burnt_toast··on Chromium: Permit blocking of view-source: with URLBlocklist
Has anyone reached out to the Governor of Missouri for his opinion on this? Instead of changing chromium we could just prosecute the students.

burnt_toast··on Ford's $3900 electric crate motor and F-100 concept
Spot on. I drive an old Cherokee and I love it. I hope to someday convert it to electric when the time comes while retaining it's utilitarian design.
burnt_toast··on $1.5B lithium deposit discovered in Maine; excavating it poses a legal challenge
As a resident I'm curious to how this will play out. I have no strong opinions either way but I feel like it's going to be a long legal battle.

The current ongoing thing here is that the power company wants to build a power corridor to transport electricity from Canada to Mass. The power company has gone through questionable means to do this and the locals are rightfully unhappy about it. It's hard to not hear about it right now.

burnt_toast··on What we learn from twitch source code leak
There's plenty of cars out there that mechanics think are designed like junk yet drivers (users) still buy / use them.

(Not sure where I was going with this)

burnt_toast··on How to permanently delete your Facebook account
I recently shut down a small business and have been having nothing but trouble trying to remove it's presence online.

Facebook made me wait two weeks before giving me the option to delete it and now it's just stuck on "deleting". Bing emails me weekly saying I need to update my listing yet I've tried 3 times to mark it as closed to no avail.

The only one I've been able to remove it from has been Google so far. It's quite frustrating.

burnt_toast··on Ambient Chaos
I really like how the further you scroll the more absurd it gets. Great touch
burnt_toast··on Why did the web take over desktop and not mobile?
> Most things built for mobile are "light" versions.

The good sites are :)

The not so good ones "force" you to download an app with no alternative and require obtrusive permissions even though all you want to know is the answer to a quick question.

burnt_toast··on Our fridge just emailed us to say we opened its door too many times
For a long time now I've been naming my computers things like "LG Refrigerator" or "LG Microwave" as a joke. I thought it'd be funny if someone was ever checking the network and saw them pop up.

I'm bummed that fridges actually use the internet now.

burnt_toast··on Reddit seeks to hire advisers for U.S. IPO – sources
I've had good luck on finding results in forums just by adding the word "forum" to the search. Not every result will be a forum but some should pop up
burnt_toast··on Watch Windows 95 crash live as it exceeds 49.7 days uptime [video]
Semi-related but I recently bought a knock off windows 95 t-shirt because I wanted a shirt with something old that would be recognizable but not mistaken for nostalgia. Kinda like a "oh yeah that used to be big" feeling.

It's weird how we can have things that are extremely well known / commonly used in our culture that suddenly disappear as soon as something better comes along never to be thought of again.

burnt_toast··on Microsoft pauses free Windows 365 cloud PC trials after ‘significant demand’
It's like we've gone full circle and returned back to timesharing / terminals. Except now we don't have to pay for the mainframe up front lol
burnt_toast··on You can be shy and still be a CEO
I run a one man business and love to blame things on someone else.

Scheduled too many jobs this week? Friggen boss is overworking me again. New business cards have too small of a font? Ugh, I need to have a talk with my designer.

burnt_toast··on How Dwarf Fortress is built
Personally, I started using git for my projects after I accidentally deleted a good chunk of source code and my closest backup was several weeks old.
burnt_toast··on Amazon has ruined search and Google is in on it
The bots can definitely be frustrating.

I like to stick to smaller subreddits as they tend to be more authentic. Usually anything under 100K subscribers (with exceptions) can be really enjoyable to lurk + a great source of info.

burnt_toast··on Capitol Hill's mystery soda machine
I've been advocating for years that they need a vending machine leash law. It's all fun and games until one goes in for a hug.
burnt_toast··on Tesla will not offer a regular steering wheel on new Model S/X
They could offer a subscription plan for unlimited honks for a small monthly fee
burnt_toast··on Getting 'Steinached' was all the rage in Roaring ’20s (2017)
This is what I was expecting the article to be about at first. Very interesting podcast episode lol
