bunbunbun··on Two-parent households should be a policy goal
The policy solution for poverty seems to be to punish the poor for not working hard enough
bunbunbun··on A third of North America’s birds have vanished
How many birds should we have?
bunbunbun··on Tuesday set an unofficial record for the hottest day on Earth
Never heard of Hot or Not? This has to go to the Dutch voters of the early 2000s.
bunbunbun··on Twitter Launches Way for Users to Charge for Access to Their Content
I only read Twitter because it doesn't cost me anything
bunbunbun··on Mary Quant, ’60s designer who invented the miniskirt, has died at 93
Not just a shorter skirt...the miniskirt reflects a cultural shift in how women are understood in society, a change in what qualifies as sexy, and a transformation of morality as expressed by comportment, among other things. It is a truly revolutionary development.
bunbunbun··on Pioneering Black African American Women Chemists and Pharmacists
Yes. Check out Margaret Rossiter’s work on women scientists.
bunbunbun··on Show HN: Get advice from a GPT3-based stoic philosopher
I refuse to acknowledge an AI/ML-based stoic unless it is named Sparkus Aurelius.
bunbunbun··on Ask HN: Is “learn to code” now “learn to drive a big rig”?
I’m not really in the business of sympathizing with CEOs for poor past decisions
bunbunbun··on Ask HN: Is “learn to code” now “learn to drive a big rig”?
So, a fad?
bunbunbun··on Ask HN: Is “learn to code” now “learn to drive a big rig”?
Agreed but also it’s weird how a lot of lay-off %s are 7% +\-1 though?
bunbunbun··on Has the elixir of youth been sitting on medicine cabinet shelves all this time?
IMO, the quest for longevity and renewed youth is already causing social resentment between generations. Do we really need older generations to hang around longer hoarding wealth and governing power? What exactly are they bringing to the table?
bunbunbun··on How we learned about coffee delivery
Sigh
bunbunbun··on Ask HN: Is GPT-Bing going to become our default search engine?
No. It’ll be my mom’s default search engine, but I will never stoop so low.
bunbunbun··on Ask HN: Is “learn to code” now “learn to drive a big rig”?
If anything I think those being laid off right now will be sought after in areas that want tech sector quality but have not been able pay tech sector wages. Government jobs, education, nonprofits, all have lots of openings right now.
bunbunbun··on The Undying Holiday-Suicide Myth
I think violent crime peaks in warm months but property crime peaks in cold months, IIRC. Am I correct in assuming you’re talking about violent crime?
bunbunbun··on How we learned about coffee delivery
There are some parallels between your critique of this startup and what educators critique about ed tech startups. Mainly that the tech comes first and the context that tech is supposed to be nested in is unacknowledged, leading to failure or other issues. I’ve been starting to wonder if incubators and CS programs need to teach units on founder humility, domain context, and social context so we stop wasting so much cash on reinventing wheels.
bunbunbun··on The Undying Holiday-Suicide Myth
What’s going on in August and September that suicides are, on average, so high then?
bunbunbun··on ChatGPT is a blurry JPEG of the web
As if to say: I heard you like AI outputs, so I put an AI output through another AI so you can have the AI output of an AI’s output
bunbunbun··on How ‘Diversity’ Policing Fails Science
Washington post had a nice economic and historical analysis of what you are talking about a few years ago: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2016/11/29/the-r...

It’s not exhaustive but gives some touchstones for further reading

bunbunbun··on How ‘Diversity’ Policing Fails Science
Probably the same thing that we can see happening now in right-wing US politics.
bunbunbun··on My grandmother died at home, just as she wanted. It cost $145,000
Long term care facilities are 5-10k USD per month. For the cheap ones. So $16k seems reasonable for in home care. There are also different intangible personal and family costs to facility-based or home-based care that folks should also consider.
bunbunbun··on How ‘Diversity’ Policing Fails Science
In other countries it could be different, but in the US: Redistribution of wealth and access to opportunity such that those things are not concentrated in one demographic group, the result with also theoretically will redistribute power.
bunbunbun··on How ‘Diversity’ Policing Fails Science
Don’t be fooled into outrage, there are at least two issues with this op Ed. First, even with negative remarks some candidates will proceed in the process and maybe become the hired person. Second, the author is relying on your ignorance of academic hiring procedures, which has its own reasoning grown out of years of faculty politics.
bunbunbun··on Abolish the PhD (2016)
That’s the way it works and will probably always work. Profit, prestige, and power are the driving factors, even for the most equity-minded individuals.
bunbunbun··on Abolish the PhD (2016)
Yeah, it is supposed to be that in theory. But in practice, I had to be trained through multiple research positions doing work for other people, none of whom had managerial experience or training. It was very chaotic and I rarely had time to work on my own research until dissertation.
bunbunbun··on Cut the cutesy errors
Then they could added a warning that commented on the nsfw aspect and not on their own non-furriness.
bunbunbun··on Abolish the PhD (2016)
I can say from experience that employees get some protections that students don’t. Particularly when it comes to:

- working hours (often paid for 20 but working close to 40)

- paid time off (I have worked through a lot of ‘vacations’ and ‘holidays’)

- health insurance (for my whole family, not just me)

- behavioral requirements for managers (I have stories)

- retirement funding

- credit for work products (imagine being told your name isn’t on a pub because you were in training)

bunbunbun··on Restarting my career after motherhood
Mothers returning to work should get the same ‘service’ considerations that military veterans get
bunbunbun··on The internet was designed with a narrow waist
Is it just me or does ‘narrow waist’ feel unnecessarily gendered when the name of that so-called waist is actually ‘neck’?
