bulte-rs··on Terry Davis Uses This
That people with a mental illness can do stuff too? They use computers just like 'we' do? They can actually write OS' so it might be interesting to see what he uses to get his stuff done?

I'm actually a bit underwhelmed since I'm more interested in the actual tools he uses to build TempleOS.

bulte-rs··on Poll: Do you use marijuana
Living in a country where this stuff is practically legal (although not really is): yes, did smoke it like once a week during uni. Not that much any more, more like once or twice a year. Can't imagine developing "on it" though :s

I guess having it available in ample (i.e. Cheap) takes the excitement/suspense/mystery away...

bulte-rs··on Uncle Bob on DHH: Monogamous TDD
And this is - IMO - where the magic happens. It's somewhat doable to "waterproof" your unit tests; but getting every (possible? Required? Anticopated?) interaction tested?

Magic.

I'm not saying tests are evil, I actually love my test suites. But as always; as soon as someone uses ALWAYS and/or NEVER, those tiny hairs in the back of my neck do a sort of wave and I try to ignore their message, which is a shame since (in this saga) both Uncle Bob and Nephew David have good advice to offer.

As for immutability; add in referential transparency, static ish typing and you've got yourself a nice development setup ;)

bulte-rs··on Uncle Bob on DHH: Monogamous TDD
> If you have a test suite that you trust so much that you are willing to deploy the system based solely on those tests passing; and if that test suite can be executed in seconds, or minutes, then you can quickly and easily clean the code without fear.

My spider sense always starts tingling when someone says something like this. Blind trust in an automated test-suite is a nice thing to strive for. But even for projects in which I have every confidence that the test suite is complete enough to actually trust it I'm still hestitant to "insta-deploy-on-pass".

Call me cautious, call me chicken, whatever... I'll not drink this flavour of kool-aid

bulte-rs··on TDD isn't dead just because DHH can't do it
I don't agree with DHH on most of it's design decisions (but who am I, I don't have the same 'track record') but I do agree wholehartedly with his opinion voiced in his rant/"article". Sure, the title is a flamebait pur-sang for TDD zealots.

Like Slackwise said below; TDD isn't dead but everyone considering it as a silver bullet should scratch their heads... twice, and rinse and repeat.

> YOUR code is hard to test BECAUSE you don't TDD.

<downvote mode on> YOUR code is hard to understand due to high levels of decoupling; overuse of abstractions and refactorings for the sake of code beautification. But at least it's tested! <downvote mode off>

bulte-rs··on TDD is dead. Long live testing.
In the same way that writing a unit test for something proves your logic is correct? This is not intended as a snark or something. Just stating the obvious that your unit tests are no silver bullet to a working correct piece of software.

My 2 cents: Combine static(ish) typing with tests and a number of (semi-manual) test scenario's and you get a few steps closer to a correctly working piece of software.

bulte-rs··on Go 1.3 beta 1 released
I fully agree in this case. But am hestitant to call for the same treatment of e.g. A web framework.

Question to answer then is: Where does the plumbing stop and the kitchen begin?

bulte-rs··on TDD is dead. Long live testing.
Finally... acknowledgement from someone famous.

TDD is wonderfull in theory, just no missing edge-case detection; stuff you easily spot when using a "hybrid continuous testing methodology".

I'd say: Code away! Just make sure you have tests for the important stuff when you 'check in' your stuff.

Offtopic: I should become famous/respected in "the community" so I can push this kinda stuff forward faster internally.

bulte-rs··on Go 1.3 beta 1 released
Lot's of libraries for this on Github; everone (myself included; plug: https://github.com/bulters/readyset) and his mother probably writes one at some point.

(Late reply: better late than never)

Ok, it's somewhat of a hyperbole. 50M for a single hire is extremely exorbitant (after all, we're not european soccer players), but consider being offered a salary 5 times your current pay.

I'm loyal to my employer as hell, even though he only pays me around 45k (euros, yes, i should get more ;) and I'd like to think I'm 'morally gifted', so I wouldn't consider quitting my current job when someone offers me double... 3 times plus, is a different story, I'm scratch my head at least twice.

bulte-rs··on OpenBSD has started a massive strip-down and cleanup of OpenSSL
I sincerely hope it's both actually. Considering I fall into the Github-generation (age-wise) of developers this is one of the things I constantly find annoying when discussing stuff with - Generation GitHub - collegues; if it's not on Github/Not in the language we usually work with/Not agile/Boring code... according to them it's not worth discussing.

Perhaps you're not technically buying a human being; but everyone's allegiance has a price.

I'll retract my statement if someone shows me real evidence that they've turned down a 500 (ok, perhaps 50 should be enough) million dollar job offer.

even better; name your mountpoint /cache! Problem solved.

Thanks for making me feel good :'(
bulte-rs··on Coinbase user emails and full names leaked
How nice of them to publish this list. I can now simply revert to the line number in this file and only have one instance of my email adress on the public internets.

Changing contact info now to: line 34 of the coinbase leak-list on pastebin.

bulte-rs··on 2-Year-Olds Convert Binary To Hexadecimals In Game Experiment
Actually. It's - unfortunately for me - partly true. She was able to figure out that you're able to use the number keys before me, and actually hitting 1A... I was fiddling around with my mouse up to that moment :|

(Semi off topic: I don't know how far developed your offspring is, but my four days shy of two years old is only able to count up to three and recognize her own name when written down sufficiently large ;)

Edit: she's also able to mash key's like a perl programmer)

bulte-rs··on 2-Year-Olds Convert Binary To Hexadecimals In Game Experiment
Just had my two year old daughter beat me at this game. Thanks for destroying my self-esteem.
bulte-rs··on Why I like Java
It's sad I can't edit my message anymore. Thanks for lightening it up.

At least exceptions ensure (...) - at least in Java - that errors are forced to be dealt with in a certain way.

bulte-rs - orkoden: 0 - 1; I love Java for it's exceptions (and "the IDE's" telling me to catch them all).

bulte-rs··on Why I like Java
My internal me was screeeaming just to put "citation needed" here (I've never done it before, this is not a good time to start). And while I agree with you on a certain level; I don't think "Java engineers" are the best software engineers per se. Neither that the best software engineers love Java 'without exception'.

I agree [with you] that Java invites you (nay, urges you) to use good engineering practices.

bulte-rs··on Why Can Pilots Still Shut Off Transponders?
One simple situation in which you would like to switch modes on the transponder (ok, so this is not technically shutting the transponder down) is when - for example - a loss of cabin pressure occurs. Since most (all?) commercial arliners will have to perform an emergency decent to somewhere around 10,000 feet it is dangerous for transponders to operate in TA/RA (Traffic Advisory/Resolution Advisory) mode and give climb or descend instructions to avoid other traffic. In this case pilots switch to a "squawk only" setting.

bulte-rs··on Codekit 2 is out
I'm far from a hipster front end dev I think; but I just happen to like the general 'tone' of this guys (if you're reading, sorry for referring to you as this guy) writing style. So probably I'm not in his target demographic.

Stuff like "Make Panic Jealous" target a really specific group of users (ye-olde average user doesn't know who/what Panic is) but really add flavour to his companies image.

Of course, to each his own. I don't like the writing style in Romeo and Juliet; does that make me a hater of the arts?

bulte-rs··on SimpleCV – Computer Vision platform using Python
I'm not well versed in the usage of OpenCV; but I just can't get the fact that most CV applications will require a more thorough understanding of the subject (both mathematically and software-technically) in order to create something more than a 'nice toy' (I'm waiting to be corrected here)
bulte-rs··on Codekit 2 is out
Are you kidding me?

The testimonials give the whola page a somewhat human touch. I - for one - am now pondering if there really is a story behind the "Mad at me since 2008" stuff about Apple's legal department :P

bulte-rs··on [dead]
Are the logo's really the problem? Personally, I think GNU could benefit more from a unified style guide so all project pages are instantly recognizable as being a gnu project and vice versa ('oi, this gnu thing is what made gcc').

Don't shoot the logo's; but it might help if someone with a sense of style would create a gnu-bootstrap template.

bulte-rs··on Questions People Ask When I Tell Them I Own an Airplane
Not only a CPL/ATPL but also an Air Operator's Certificate. Unfortunately it's not as easy as buying yourself a license, rent a plane and start making money.
bulte-rs··on Questions People Ask When I Tell Them I Own an Airplane
True, but do this for 200 hours... and you're out of options of new stuff to try. Then you try a bigger/better plane and/or more extreme manouvres.

Same as with sex: when you're bored with the regular stuff: try new manouvres or a new partner ;-)

bulte-rs··on Questions People Ask When I Tell Them I Own an Airplane
I flew a Seneca V (twin engine, semi 'amateur' plane) during pilot training which was equiped with an autopilot.

Really helps when flying in congested airspace or while performing 'complex' arrivals.

bulte-rs··on Questions People Ask When I Tell Them I Own an Airplane
Luckily there is an ample supply of unemployed CPL-holders dying to take that right seat in an airliner (and sometimes even paying to do so).

(Disclaimer: I have a frozen ATPL(A) myself, worked for one of the biggest airlines and know at least 100 of mentioned unemployed pilots)
