bufferout··on The subtle art of designing physical controls for cars
Surely the pinnacle of design here would simply be two buttons: "I'm too hot" and "I'm too cold" (assuming you couldn't somehow automatically measure that state e.g. contactless thermometers).

All the complexity of deciding resulting target temperature and fan speed is work that an elegant and intelligent system should then perform for the end user. If it can't be determined automatically, try harder or add more controls.

bufferout··on El Salvador abandons Bitcoin as legal tender
As a counter, inflationary systems slowly transfer more and more wealth from those without assets, to those with.

It might be different if wages grew at the same rate as inflation, but they rarely do.

The standard target rate of 2% inflation does not take into account the deflationary effects of ever increasing technology / efficiency. So in reality, it's much higher then the 2% stated figures.

bufferout··on Minifying HTML for GPT-4o: Remove all the HTML tags
An example of where this approach is problematic: many ecommerce product pages feature embedded json that is used to dynamically update sections of the page.

bufferout··on U.S. Intelligence Says TikTok Is a Threat – But Only in Theory
Tiktok is effectively controlled by a foreign/hostile power though. One who has the nous to ban foreign social media from their own shores.

bufferout··on Rotten meat may have been a staple of Stone Age diets
vegetarian for 20 years and cooking beef literally smells like dog poop to my nose. So yeah, maybe just a matter of what you're used to?
bufferout··on Original Prusa MK4
X1 owner here. Previously owned the mk3s+. Bambu is your best choice today and really a quantum leap in terms of performance. you will still need to occasionally fuss with things, mostly in terms of optimal slicer settings, but I still get the odd physical failure that requires intervention e.g. filament snapping in the guide tube, object seperating from the sheet misprint, etc.

The AMS has been wonderful for me: no longer manually swapping out filaments, and cool tricks like automatically laying down a layer of easily-removed support filament between model and support structure.

bufferout··on Gender dysphoria is rising – and so is professional disagreement
For a professional politician, it was a pretty irresponsible wielding of the language.

bufferout··on Vandals destroy 30k-year-old indigenous cave drawings in Australia
It's a complex topic. Cosmopolitan white Australians generally tend to overcompensate on the virtue posturing front in regards to being pro black rights. Many not actually having ever met an indigenous member of our population. Rural whites tend to be more cynical as they have direct exposure to the effects of rampant alcoholism and crime in many indigenous communities.

I grew up around indigenous kids in Townsville several decades ago (shoes at our school were optional which I thought was a win for everyone). Honestly didn't consider the black kids any different, despite my actively racist parents.

The general consensus now is that the indigenous population is no doubt disadvantaged, but there's still an undercurrent of it being perceived as a self inflicted situation due to poor choices / victim mentality / whatever. A common story that does the rounds is of government provided housing having campfires lit in the living room.

I'd say it's a pretty universal opinion that all gov policy on the matter has been, and still is, ineffective or wasteful. I have no idea how you'd actually legislate effective change here though as it's most certainly not a matter of just throwing more money at the problem.

bufferout··on Australia’s first social impact bond targeting homelessness is successful
Paper here: https://apo.org.au/node/318409

tldr; furnishing the homeless with intensive, long-term (if needed) support and rapid access to housing leads to good outcomes- both for them and the broader community.

One theory is that the abundance of slave labour disincentivised any real push towards automation. That said, they did have massive water mill complexes for grinding grain.

An important habit when using testers: test the tester first on a known live wire. You don't want to find out the hard way if your tester has stopped working.

bufferout··on Ask HN: What prompted you to convert from non-vegetarian to vegetarian?
Moral consistency. If I wouldn't kill it with my own hands then I won't eat it. Spend any thoughtful time around "edible" animals and the alternative starts to look more and more barbaric imho.

Practically speaking though, just eat meat whenever you want to: it's not a binary process (unless you're doing it for the approval of others).

bufferout··on U.S. moves toward supplying Romania with a new style of nuclear plant
Can you cite what this super cheap storage is? My understanding is that li-on is the only existing option, however won't work at scale due to cost, longevity, etc.
bufferout··on U.S. moves toward supplying Romania with a new style of nuclear plant
We can (and do) build reactors to withstand these types of events. Objectively, the number of human casualties from nuclear plant disasters is comparatively very low, not even considering advances in safety technology.
bufferout··on U.S. moves toward supplying Romania with a new style of nuclear plant
One point is that you can't replace an entire grid with renewables due to their intermittent nature. They're also building out renewables so perhaps the nuclear generators are intended to offset some of their reliance on coal/gas on-demand generators?
