buckbova··on Pinboard Acquires Delicious
I honestly didn't realize delicious was still around. It felt really groundbreaking at the time. I loved the ability to tag and search for links by tags to find new interesting content. Perhaps with introduction news mashups like digg it didn't feel as useful anymore. I stopped using delicious soon after it was acquired by yahoo.

Site has been bounced around a bit since.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delicious_(website)

"The site was founded by Joshua Schachter and Peter Gadjokov in 2003 and acquired by Yahoo in 2005. By the end of 2008, the service claimed more than 5.3 million users and 180 million unique bookmarked URLs.[2][3][4] Yahoo sold Delicious to AVOS Systems in April 2011,[5] and the site relaunched in a "back to beta" state on September 27 that year.[6] In May 2014, AVOS sold the site to Science Inc.[7] In January 2016 Delicious Media, a new alliance, reported it had assumed control of the service.[8]"

buckbova··on How Tales of ‘Flippers’ Led to a Housing Bubble
> "Some people eager to make quick profits bought Donald J. Trump’s well-timed 2004 book, “Trump: Think Like a Billionaire: Everything You Need to Know About Success, Real Estate, and Life,” written with Meredith McIver. Some enrolled in the less well-timed Trump University, which emphasized real estate investment in 2005, at the very end of the housing boom; it shut down, amid lawsuits and recrimination, in 2010."

NY Times takes every opportunity it can to fire a shot across the bow at president trump. Yes, let's blame this on trump, why not?

> "There is still no consensus on why the last housing boom and bust happened."

Seems like there is. Folks were given loans they were unqualified for and had no reasonable way to pay off, some at the behest of the government.

buckbova··on President Trump Dismisses FBI Director Comey
Let's tone down the hyperbole.

Edit:

I don't like having a political argument in this forum. I don't want hn to turn into r/politics.

I'm not swayed by emotional pleas from celebrities or others crying about a bill they haven't read. Who are these folks dying by the millions? From what I see mortality rates rose since obamacare came about:

"We know that the same year Obamacare’s insurance expansion provisions took effect, there was a pronounced, and statistically significant, surge in U.S. adult mortality."

So you can get some facts together or continue crying. Your choice.

buckbova··on More Americans now work full-time from home than walk and bike to office jobs
There are showers. It's just not for me.

Now I'm dragging a set of clothes/shoes, soap, towel/rag, hair brush, razor, shaving cream, etc to work? Probably should wear sandals in the shower unless I want foot fungus. Then what do I do with my wet towel and stank clothes? Stuff them in a bag where they stink worse? Hang them in my cube?

Then I head home and have to put on my stank clothes and get all sweated up again. Time for another shower I guess.

And that's not mentioning the time in transit, probably an hour a day round trip by bike. This is why I live close to my work. I can drive there with all the street lights and park, portal to portal in 10 minutes.

buckbova··on Ask a Female Engineer: How Can Managers Help Retain Technical Women?
Code reviews may have grown in importance due to scaled back formal design documents and formal qa staff and processes.

> young women generally respond to it in a way that I like (e.g. they make a value judgement about what advice was worth taking and what wasn't and do it).

In my only 10+ years experience, I noticed women seem more defensive about their code being reviewed and I have to write long formal arguments if I'm suggesting any more than a trivial change. Then there will be a discussion afterwards and based on that it's 50/50 whether it gets done. Now I pad reviews with positives about the work to soften it in some probably transparent attempt to placate the reviewee.

With men, I review the code, make a suggestion, I usually get a note "sounds good, will do." That's not all men of course, there's always at least one guy who doesn't want his code reviewed at all, too good, doesn't see the point, etc.

> baseless attacks on the credibility of sourced articles

I'm sure potus gets it wrong firing from hip so often, but I don't know to which articles you're referring. These news outlets are on full attack against this administration. Just look at positive vs negative news coverage.

> Only 3 percent of the reports about Trump that aired on NBC and CBS were positive, while 43 percent were negative and 54 percent were neutral.

Slander? You don't know the truth yet and you're ready to believe what you want to believe. That's what's pathetic.

buckbova··on Police ask for whole city's Google searches, and a judge says yes
Why shouldn't the New York Times be held accountable?

Stop running with fake news and non-stories to push an agenda. Major news organization should be compelled to print the facts and instead go on a constant witch hunt (eg Maddow's non-story about Trump's taxes). They are trying to undermine the administration of the president of the united states. This should not be taken lightly.

And despite (maybe in spite of) the constant aggression towards potus and his administration, the people trust Trump more than the media.

And just because someone has a small blog, they still shouldn't make up stories.

buckbova··on Google Splits Hangouts into Chat and Meet
The previous incarnation of what's now hangouts was seamlessly updated on whatever phone I had at the time when it was phased out. I don't even remember the name because it doesn't matter. Been on android since froyo without issue of the messenger app being retired.

It's not going anywhere anytime soon like I said and when it does, it'll get updated with the next thing and still have chat, voice, and video.

Install hangouts on the iphone. It's not going anywhere anytime soon.

Or you can have your friend install iMessage on the android. Wait apple doesn't port it's apps to android? I'm stunned.

buckbova··on The Real Reason Women Quit Tech (and How to Address It) (2016)
Exactly. When I read that in the article I was stunned. It used to be pretty standard it'd take 5+ years to make a senior engineer role, another 1 or 2 for a lead, and even more for architect which can be a slightly different path.

> A study by the Center for Talent Innovation found that 27% of women in tech feel stalled in their careers and 32% are likely to quit within one year; 48% of Black women in tech feel stalled.

One year?! I've been out of school for over 15 years and most of the time moving sideways. You've got to put in the time and effort. For most a senior role is all they'll achieve (or want).

buckbova··on The Real Reason Women Quit Tech (and How to Address It) (2016)
I honestly try to do this all the time, but mostly for those who are less vocal, the quiet ones. I tend to be on the other end of the spectrum, so if I never shut up at least I'm throwing someone else a bone in the process.

buckbova··on Why I Moved to Vue.js from Angular 2
My experience so far moving from angular 1 to vuejs.

I was coming from using gulp to build angular 1 projects. I understand gulp. Might be a bit verbose, but I get it.

Vue seems more tailored toward webpack as a module loader/build tool. It took me awhile to wrap my head around this and using webpack in general.

Truly yak shaving.

So I came up with a good build script with babel, code splitting, vue component loader, cache bust, minify, etc. All good. The vue-cli looked helpful, but it didn't really do much but download one of a few templates, which I felt did too much.

Finally I can start coding . . . so far so good. Do know, batteries are not included. With angular it's basically all there ready to use. With vue, npm install, import and use it or roll your own.

Managing the data is different. If you come from a background writing modular code, it'll be easier to $digest. If you relied on angular constructs like service, controller, 2-way binding and didn't think about it too deeply then it'll take some getting used to. I'm still getting used to vuex.

There's more . . . maybe after I finish a project with vue.
