bubblehack3r··on Ask HN: How might HN build a social network together?
What pain points? I can argue that the way HN is built today is the most effective for its purpose.
bubblehack3r··on Ask HN: How do people come up with unique algorithms?
An algorithm is just a set process to calculate something. Once there is something new to calculate - a new algorithm will usually be born.

Usually new things that need to be calculated require new calculation steps. These steps chained together into a process is an algorithm.

After achieving a first working version, optimizations are usually put into place. for example chaining previously written algorithms.

Hope this helps.

bubblehack3r··on Ask HN: Any SaaS to easily monetize my sideproject?
I think this is what FrontEgg does - https://frontegg.com/
bubblehack3r··on Ask HN: Is Google a Monopoly?
Monopoly behavior is not what you describe it to be. Not providing customer support is a whole different issue and has nothing to do with Google maybe being a monopoly.

Monopoly behavior is buying out competition forcefully and dominating a market with an unfair advantage ensuring they are the only ones in the market. I personally don't believe Google is a monopoly in the Search Engine market but that's only my opinion.

bubblehack3r··on Ask HN: Examples of high-value specialised consulting?
Most clients are word to mouth, some I meet at conferences and meetups.
bubblehack3r··on Ask HN: Examples of high-value specialised consulting?
This is in addition to other consultancy projects, but does make up about 60% of my yearly income.
bubblehack3r··on Ask HN: Examples of high-value specialised consulting?
Almost no automation, I use automation when it helps the manual process like searching for open ports or discovering directories and files.
bubblehack3r··on Ask HN: Examples of high-value specialised consulting?
I do cybersecurity consulting. Specifically, Web Application Security which I charge $350/hr for and make about $300k/yr from this.

I am usually brought in when a competitor gets hacked and the company gets scared or as part of a high quality penetration test.

My experience is mixed between cyber security and fullstack development. This led to me having a very deep knowledge of how to properly consult companies regarding potential vulnerabilities.

bubblehack3r··on Ask HN: Generalist contractors, what is your hourly rate?
I take part in local meetups who are always looking for speakers and apply to CFP.
bubblehack3r··on Ask HN: Generalist contractors, what is your hourly rate?
Sounds like it is less technical correct? I find that there are a lot of auditing firms out there willing to do compliance work for cheap therefor bringing down the prices (still not super low).

Technical auditing and training in cyber security was always a kind of niche that allows you to charge more.

bubblehack3r··on Ask HN: Generalist contractors, what is your hourly rate?
Although I charge a flat fee, I've found that companies tend to be more accepting to my pricing when it's a longer engagement than a shorter one
bubblehack3r··on Ask HN: Generalist contractors, what is your hourly rate?
They can go anywhere from one hour (e.g awareness training) to a full month (e.g complex web application pentest)
bubblehack3r··on Ask HN: Generalist contractors, what is your hourly rate?
I'm a cyber security specialist (in web application security) with a few certifications and 10+ years of experience.

I charge usually $350 an hour unless it's something I estimate will require the help of an outsider to which I may go as high at $1k an hour.

Answering everyone asking how we find clients - I love public speaking and so I try to do as much as I can. 80% of my clients saw me speak, the other 20% come from word to mouth. Highly recommend if you have the ability.

bubblehack3r··on Ask HN: What are the ways you go about getting comfortable with a new codebase?
Run the code. This sounds so trivial but it's not always that easy. Once it get's running, I discuss with users of the code (be it customers or developers) and try to understand what they use it for and look for that same functionality in the code. Usually by this point I know where everything is and how to make changes if needed.
