That's how they control the quality of content. I'm not saying I agree with this, it's just how they've chosen to manage the store and it's why there's a multitude of publishers which will help produce your content and get it into the iTunes Store (eg. http://www.tunecore.com/).

Apple's stance at least seems pretty clear cut: The App Store is for apps, the iTunes/iBooks Stores are for content. Content masquerading as an App will not be allowed in the App Store, but the content is welcome in the iTunes store.

I do think they're making a fair distinction between an app that's basically a wrapper around a movie, and an app that allows access to content (eg. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/5by5-radio/id520847556).

I suspect Ze has some form of corporate entity. But that is unlikely to change the taxable nature of the income unless it's a designated non-profit organization.

I don't think you're giving the modern population enough credit. I'd argue that most people understand that there are cases where you can take something, and the original owner still has it. What's ingrained, rather, is a respect for the inventors, creators, originators of the world. We look to them with awe and, rightly or not, feel some low-level need to recognize and uphold that they came first with their creation.

Do you also disagree with the other types of intellectual property rights such as trademarks & copyrights, or are you just talking in the context of patents?

This does seem like a bit of a problem, but I'd imagine the idea is you "re-sell" anything you no-longer want-- which may mean it didn't fit you right.

What it strikes me this business needs are small pre-paid boxes which will fit in US mailboxes or can be left for your mailman.

Perhaps the real question is does allowing the patenting of UI innovation encourage greater innovation, or stifle it?

It strikes me that Loren's "pull to refresh" really was an invention of a new UI concept. Do we see no place for patents in true UI innovation?

On a side-note, is it ironic that this post is from a guy who was recently upset when someone else appropriated his own innovative UI?
