btgeekboy··on AWS's us-east-1 region is experiencing issues
This is a pretty big claim to make. Do you have any sources that back it up?
btgeekboy··on iMac G4 to M1 conversion process
Ugh, that does look bad. I didn’t realize it was on the side. Reminds me of the mouse with the charging port on the bottom.

If I owned one of these and had external speakers, I’d consider getting a basic USB audio adapter and using that so it’s out of sight. Bonus: it keeps your headphone jack free for actual headphones.

btgeekboy··on Apple and Major League Baseball to Offer “Friday Night Baseball”
Pitching changes lead to a commercial break - and current coaching strategies lead to frequent changes. Combine that with everyone consistently swinging for the fences vs. putting the ball in play with runners aboard, and the game gets tedious to watch.
btgeekboy··on iMac G4 to M1 conversion process
The part about built-in speakers is interesting. How often would you be connecting/disconnecting them? Seems like the kind of thing you'd connect once and be done with it.
btgeekboy··on Duck DNS – free dynamic DNS hosted on AWS
OPNSense saves an AWS keypair. When it detects my IP changes, it updates a Route53 record using the AWS API. It’s one of the options alongside a bunch of other DDNS providers.
btgeekboy··on World's only An-225 destroyed by Russian airstrikes
The AN-225 was in a category of its own. In fact, the Dreamlifter was modified to fit components for the 787, but it actually has a lower max takeoff weight (803k lbs) than the original 747 it came from (875k lbs).

Meanwhile, the Beluga XL only has a max takeoff weight of 500k lbs.

The AN-225 had a max takeoff weight of 1.4m lbs.

btgeekboy··on Duck DNS – free dynamic DNS hosted on AWS
My router supports Route53, so I just pay the $0.50/month for them to host the domain. I don't foresee Route53 going away anytime soon.
btgeekboy··on Ask HN: Any scientifically proven techniques to boost concentration?
I’ve gone the caffeine route before, and it works but only until the crash. The heart palpitations aren’t worth it, IMHO.

I’ve had a subscription to Brain.fm for a bit over a year now. Supposedly it doesn’t work for everyone but I find the act of picking a 60 minute Deep Focus block, probably just as much as the music itself, really helps me keep my head down.

btgeekboy··on Car stolen with homemade GPS tracker in backseat
My vehicles are insured, and car thieves don’t treat vehicles with care. Once it’s been stolen, it belongs to the insurance company. I don’t want it back.
btgeekboy··on Ask HN: Can we ban Twitter links, please?
I've never come to understand the disdain for tweet threads. Sure, a blog would be nice, but as a reader I have no idea if it's going to render correctly on mobile or be inundated with terrible ads. At minimum there'll be a braindead cookie banner taking up 1/3 of the screen. Meanwhile, the author now has to go set up a blog somewhere, link to it, moderate comments on two forums, etc. All because people can't read with a faint horizontal line between coherent thoughts? Or is there something I'm missing?
btgeekboy··on Truth Social Releases on the Apple App Store
Only 12MB? I'm guessing it's basically just a webview?
btgeekboy··on Apple chief Tim Cook faces shareholder revolt over $99M pay package
The Onion is satire; that's not a real quote.
btgeekboy··on Akamai to Acquire Linode
This was the same era that Linode had the compromises listed. It's a pretty apples-to-apples comparison, though I agree it has been almost a decade since.
btgeekboy··on Akamai to Acquire Linode
Not really a compromise but there was a point where they weren’t wiping block devices by default: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6983097

Not sure if that’s changed. (Hopefully it has!)

btgeekboy··on Early ‘lab-grown’ Covid virus found in sample lends weight to Wuhan theory
The accusations are not against Asians. But the inciteful rhetoric has coincided with an uptick in hate crimes against Asians.

btgeekboy··on Early ‘lab-grown’ Covid virus found in sample lends weight to Wuhan theory
I’m totally open to the idea that it was a lab leak of some sort. What I’m opposed to is certain political figures presenting that theory as fact, without evidence, for political gain at the expense of an entire race of people.
btgeekboy··on Turing Pi Trouble with PayPal
Another answer is "approximately 72% of what it was just one month ago."
btgeekboy··on Show HN: Justyourip.com
That may return IPv6 if you have IPv6 connectivity, which might not be what you're looking for.

I just do this, myself:

IP=`curl -s checkip.amazonaws.com`

btgeekboy··on Show HN: Justyourip.com
Doesn’t seem to work for me on Safari/iOS.

Couple alternatives:

* Search Google or DDG for “my ip”.

* http://checkip.amazonaws.com/

btgeekboy··on Ready for an N95? Here's how to find a high-quality one that fits you well
It takes more effort to wear an N95 than nothing. But it’s certainly not impossible, and for most people (including my overweight, out-of-shape self), it’s not insurmountable.

It’s like wearing pants. You’d have a lot more mobility if you didn’t, but we do it anyway.

btgeekboy··on Poll: Why are people leaving their jobs?
I'm quite happy with the work environment of my current job. But I bet I can earn more money, so I'm interviewing. I'm specifically only applying to companies I'd really like to work for, though - I'm not trying to keep myself afloat.

After all, why not? It's not like you have to take a day or two off to potentially fly out for the on-site these days. It's been years since I played the interview game, so I need to keep my skills sharp. And if I get a better offer at a company I'd like to work for, why not take it? If the offer's not better, I can politely decline.

btgeekboy··on Google says iMessage is too powerful
Snapchat? All the kids are on Discord now.
btgeekboy··on I quit caffeine
I would love for more places to serve things like Bubly/La Croix/etc or Fresca, both of which I enjoy at home but rarely out and about.
btgeekboy··on I quit caffeine
I’ve tried quitting caffeine in the past, but the problem I run into is that I’m actually not a coffee drinker, but a Diet Coke drinker. I don’t enjoy the taste of plain water. So at a restaurant/drive thru/etc, my options are diet soda (with 0 calories) or something caffeine-free with hundreds of calories. When you’re trying to budget calories, that hurts a lot.

At least I’ve been able to reduce my overall consumption of caffeine a bit, but I haven’t been able to cut it out completely.

btgeekboy··on What NPM should do to stop a new colors attack
NPM makes an interesting trade off - with the current scheme, security updates which improve the security posture of the application are accepted by default. Those are far more common than malicious updates. Would pinning dependencies lead to larger problems? Imagine if a log4j-like issue showed up tomorrow; most NPM-managed software would just require reinstallation to be fixed.
btgeekboy··on Framework Laptop with Ubuntu Review
The power requirements to achieve that though are insane. Battery life will be small; heatsinks will be massive.
btgeekboy··on Motorists have been stranded on a major interstate in Virginia since last night
I keep a few moving blankets in my trunk. Good for protecting my car/items in trips to the store, cheap enough I don't care if they're ruined, and they'll also come in handy if something like this scenario ever happens to me.
btgeekboy··on Microsoft confirms Exchange Year 2022 problem
Because these files aren't going backward in time, and it's quite unlikely this code will be in use in 78 years.
btgeekboy··on A tracking device made by Apple is showing up in suspected crimes
Besides the obvious (e.g. "not to be talked to rudely"), what positive outcomes did you expect to get out of this encounter?
btgeekboy··on Ask HN: What are the single person activities in Christmas and/or New Year?
If I was in my old apartment(s) in downtown Seattle today, during COVID, I’d probably be up on the rooftop with a small cooler of beverages, warm jacket, and a good pair of headphones.

Pre-COVID, I’d be somewhere like the 5 Point Cafe or another dive bar.

Or, I’d be working on one of my hobbies.
