btgeekboy··on Retro Computer Museum
Hopefully someday we can re-add Living Computers in Seattle, WA USA to the list. https://www.livingcomputers.org

Paul Allen's death, and then the COVID pandemic, effectively put the museum in stasis. At least two of Allen's former museum-ish places are getting to reopen soon - both the downtown Cinerama and the Flying Heritage and Combat Armor museum in Mukilteo have been sold by his estate and are reopening this year. Hopefully Living Computers is next.

btgeekboy··on Why don’t more people live close to friends?
That's kinda why I like living in the suburbs now. My commute into the city is ~30 by transit. But I have a garage to tinker in (recently added a 3d printer to the workbench), and I store my car there for driving beyond the reach of the transit system.

Though I will admit, I do miss being able to walk downstairs to one of many bars, have a few drinks, maybe end up at the local greasy spoon, and walk home. Can't have it all, I suppose.

btgeekboy··on Why don’t more people live close to friends?
Agree; I'd actually theorize that the parent's comment has cause and effect backwards - when church is something you're compelled to attend, you overcome the heavy lift of having to load the family up into the car, drive, find somewhere to park, and attend services. And once you're there, conveniently, you're surrounded by people with at least one thing in common.
btgeekboy··on Liberating the MacBook Air 2013 with Linux
I tried to do something similar recently with my 2015 12" MacBook, but the hardware support just isn't there. (I've tried both the latest Ubuntu and Fedora; both have issues with the keyboard and trackpad not being usable after sleep.) Unfortunately, given the age of the hardware, I don't have high hopes of that changing.
btgeekboy··on Meta stops offering remote work in new job postings
I doubt the recruiter would have known anything different. A lot of these sudden RTO initiatives appear to be top-down things, not something recruiters would have known about a year in advance.
btgeekboy··on $39 Cooler Master case turns your old Framework Laptop parts into a tiny PC
I’ve seen a few twists on that idea, such as this one: https://www.printables.com/model/416934-framework-as-a-serve...
btgeekboy··on Windows 11 KB5023778 update adds promotions to the Start menu
Didn’t applications used to be able to show their titles in the taskbar under W11 if you change the taskbar settings? Did that go away, or am I imagining that ability?
btgeekboy··on Tesla now factors late night driving into their safety score
I don't drive a Tesla, and clearly don't have their insurance, but have had my rates affected by driving between 12a and 4a.

My insurer (not a cut-rate one) did give me a discount for using, for 90 days, one of their OBDII dongles. That dongle measured a few things, one of which was number of times I drove between 12am and 4am. (Others included number of times I hard braked, but none of them was how fast I was actually going.) I'm a night owl, so the 12am part was frustrating.

At least for this particular insurer, the discount sticks after you send the dongle back.

btgeekboy··on Thomas Midgley Jr. invented leaded gasoline and chlorofluorocarbons
Do you have a citation for the debunking? The WA state legislature is trying to push through a bunch of unfunded mandates of dubious effectiveness on airports based on this study.
btgeekboy··on Is something wrong with Amazon Photos? I lost 240k photos
The idea behind dropping a Synology off would be that you could sync to it remotely, so you don’t have to be lazy about refreshing it.

Though online backups have their own risks (ransomware).

btgeekboy··on I spent a week without IPv4 to understand IPv6 transition mechanisms
Correct. If I talk to service A and I see an address that’s in the same /64 as service B, it’s unlikely there’s a firewall between the two. Two different /56 or /48? Probably a different site.
btgeekboy··on Amazon is closing its cashierless stores in NYC, San Francisco and Seattle
One of those stores was only accessible by badged Amazon employees, too. It was basically just a grab and go cafeteria for them.
btgeekboy··on School dental program prevents 80% of cavities with non-invasive treatment
I had the latter kind growing up. Moved away, and went to a dentist with a fancy name and close to my office. Huge mistake. I’ve lost track of how many they drilled. My mouth hasn’t been the same since.

I have a new dentist now who’s much like my previous one. My advice to anyone with a new dentist - if your new dentist suggests a bunch of new fillings when your track record differs dramatically, get a second opinion!

btgeekboy··on NameCheap's email hacked to send Metamask, DHL phishing emails
If I have a business and I use a company like sendgrid, I have credentials to use that service. If some employee has access to that account (such as to send newsletters), and that employee’s credentials were lost or stolen, that doesn’t seems suspicious at all.

I don’t have any inside info here, but it makes sense. And as a namecheap customer, I see no reason to panic at this time.

btgeekboy··on School dental program prevents 80% of cavities with non-invasive treatment
It boils down to your dentist, too. Some will leap to drilling and filling every little speck they can find (and charge you for it), while others will monitor them and see if they progress.

Having been to both types, I’d say I strongly prefer the latter.

btgeekboy··on PC CPU Shipments See Steepest Decline in 30 Years
Yeah, my Ryzen 3700x is a 3.5 year old CPU now. I might try to move to an AM5 build later this year, but it’s still a very decent PC.

btgeekboy··on Building IoT Wireless Connectivity Devices – Blues Wireless
I have no relation to the company, just found these devices to be pretty slick and reasonably priced (for what you get) for the average tinkering engineer.
btgeekboy··on Is AM radio dead?
Ask the A&Ps is a podcast that’s a pretty similar concept but for general aviation.
btgeekboy··on FCC threatens to disconnect Twilio for illegal robocalls
TFNs require registration now too, as of sometime last year.
btgeekboy··on Where our gasoline comes from
While this is interesting, what took me a minute to realize is that while the line about US gasoline being produced in the US is (presumably) true, it doesn’t explain why global oil prices tend to affect our gas prices. That line is about the refinery stage of the manufacturing pipeline.

For the raw material, crude oil, you need to jump over to https://www.eia.gov/energyexplained/oil-and-petroleum-produc...

btgeekboy··on “tipflation” and “tip creep” are sparking a backlash
I just got an invoice from a company that came out yesterday and resealed all of the gaps/protrusions/etc on my roof. $475 plus tax. Little high considering the effort, but it's a tall townhome, so no way in hell I'm getting up on a ladder that high and doing it myself.

I got to the checkout process and there was a tip box. Since when do you tip roofers? I didn't even interact with the guys that showed up and did the work - the appointment was planned, they came out and did it, and they left.

The options on the tip box were 10, 15, and 20%. Needless to say, I set it to 0. It's getting ridiculous. I paid for a service, it was performed, and that should be that. I'm not tipping an extra $50-100 for doing your job. This wasn't even a one-man show, it was a company, so I have no idea how those tips are distributed.

btgeekboy··on Mac Malware of 2022
I once spent far, far too much time debugging my “broken” laptop to realize a book was touching the corner of my external trackpad that I wasn’t actively using.
btgeekboy··on Tell HN: MS forcing Edge shortcut on desktop
It really bugs me about Edge that it's actually a decent browser (well, Chromium under the hood is, but I also like the built-in vertical tabs), but Microsoft keeps going crazy w/ the shenanigans.

Example: I typically use Firefox on MacOS at work, but figured I'd give Edge a try. I've set my default search to DDG, but there's still plenty of ways to "accidentally" search via Bing. I also had to install an extension to make the new tab interface be about:blank.

Like come on. You've got a good, solid wrapper around Chromium, and this is the nonsense you make your users deal with.

Unlike some of my sibling replies, I see(quel) what you did there.

btgeekboy··on Microsoft is preparing to add ChatGPT to Bing
Knowing little about how ChatGPT actually works, is there perhaps a variable that could be exposed, something that would represent the model's confidence in the solution provided?
btgeekboy··on Reasons a Raspberry Pi Belongs in Your Network Lab
At this point, you're more likely to find an off-lease laptop running Linux. Bonus - for roughly the same price (assuming you buy a MicroSD card, power supply, case, etc), you'll get a screen/keyboard/trackpad, battery backup, a lot more performance, and a real SSD. There's nothing here that can't be done with any bog-standard Linux host.
