bspammer··on The last time my family was replaced by technology
I'm not sure I agree that it was ludicrously wrong. His thesis is "the question isn't whether self-driving cars will replace human drivers, but how quickly". Sure it's been slow going, but you can't walk down a street in San Francisco today without seeing a Waymo, which wasn't true a few years ago. We're still at the bottom of the S curve.
bspammer··on Solving Factorio Quality
My dream game would be something like this: SpaceChem at the micro level, Factorio at the medium level, and StarCraft at the macro level. Your proficiency at each level would affect the levels above and below it.

Probably an impossible game to make, but I can dream.

bspammer··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
And anyone selling flying lessons could probably afford a graphic designer, it sounds like we agree.
bspammer··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
The last paragraph in GP’s comment is the key. Nobody would care about a low effort poster, what they care about is the deception of pretending you put a lot of effort into the poster. It’s dishonest, and it would make me subconsciously question what else they’re being dishonest about.
bspammer··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
For me what always gives it away is not the posters themselves, it’s the context. These are all overdesigned for a local community fair. There is no way they’d be paying for a professional designer for this, therefore it’s AI.

On the other hand if it had word art, grammar/spelling mistakes, images with wrong aspect ratios or clipping issues, that would immediately convince me it wasn’t AI.

bspammer··on Anecdotally, programmers dislike "reduce"
Yeah that's good application design, but those concerns aren't so relevant to the person writing the standard library for a language. You can certainly include a specialized version of reduce for nonEmptyLists which just returns A, but that doesn't change the fact that you have to return an Optional for a normal possibly-empty iterator if you want your reduce function to be non-partial.
bspammer··on Anecdotally, programmers dislike "reduce"
japgolly’s signature for reduce above is slightly wrong, it should be `[A] -> ((A,A) -> A) -> Maybe A`.

I.e. there is no initial value to pass in, but the result is an Optional to handle the empty iterator case. That’s how rust does it, for example:

https://doc.rust-lang.org/std/iter/trait.Iterator.html#metho...

bspammer··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
Yeah this is selection bias. The remaining uncontacted tribes are uncontacted because they are very hostile to outsiders.
bspammer··on Ask HN: Can we please limit the AI news flood?
The future is open models running on your device. No subsidized corporate tooling required. There will never be a reckoning for the people who are letting their coding skills atrophy.

I don't like it either, but that's the way it is.

bspammer··on What algorithm did Windows XP use to choose your initial user picture?
If you read the "Adapting Probabilities" section of the link above, there's a nice explanation of why changing the probability works.
bspammer··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
Obviously they'll get away with this in the US, but doesn't this break a LOT of EU privacy laws?
bspammer··on Portal by Spotify cut my Claude Code token usage by 90%
The app has gotten consistently slower, buggier, with worse UX for over a decade. In all that time, I can’t recall a single new feature I’ve actually found useful.

The app was done in 2011. They could make a massive improvement across the board with a single git reset --hard command.

bspammer··on Dutch central bank moves 86 tonnes of gold from US citing 'geopolitical unrest'
They’re not moving it to the Netherlands. There’s still plenty of countries that the Dutch trust, but the US no longer seems to be on that list.
bspammer··on Check if a file was made with Claude
Anthropic must see themselves as the most evil people on the planet then. Forcing a sentient being to endure a non-stop barrage of abuse from the general public would be an unimaginable crime.

I don’t think they actually believe that.

bspammer··on Since it was stripped of planetary status, Pluto’s defenders have been fighting
Here’s a visualisation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBcxuM-qXec
bspammer··on California lawmakers unanimously pass Linux exemption from age-verification law
Or even better, just a “User is a child” header.
bspammer··on How Bluesky draws its logo on screenshots
Yeah it’s Snapchat. If you take a screenshot of a (potentially extremely private, intended to be ephemeral) image, it notifies the person who sent it.
bspammer··on Brazilian election filter in X For You timeline
They’re not propagandists, they’re the official accounts of candidates in the election. I don’t see any problem with this as long as it’s applied to all candidates equally.
bspammer··on Learning more about Claude's mathematical capabilities
The acknowledgements section in the paper is so bizarre. We have an LLM thanking individual humans for their contributions.
bspammer··on Mario Meets Pareto
For a speedrun you don't care about 100 failed runs as long as you get the world record once. You're basically hoping to get lucky that the computer opponent won't hit you. Obviously you're going to pick the greediest (i.e highest speed) choice in that setting, that doesn't make it good in normal gameplay.
bspammer··on Mario Meets Pareto
Because Donkey Kong gives more speed for exactly the same acceleration. I.e. you sacrifice nothing and gain something by switching away.

EDIT: If you mean that Rosalina looks slightly higher on the graph, I believe that's just a visual effect to allow multiple characters to occupy the same square - the stats are all integers.

bspammer··on Situational Awareness Down 67% in July in AI Stock Rout
The paywall does not cover the first paragraph
bspammer··on Situational Awareness Down 67% in July in AI Stock Rout
The link is right there, and the answer is in the first paragraph.
bspammer··on Minecraft Java raises recommended memory to 16GB ahead of Vulkan transition
I really don't care about Microsoft's maintenance costs. I should be able to play the game I paid for 20 years from now without having to jump through hoops in the intervening period. It's not my fault that they decided to make my perfectly normal account a "legacy" account, that was their decision.
bspammer··on Minecraft Java raises recommended memory to 16GB ahead of Vulkan transition
I paid for Minecraft and can no longer play it. I'm supposed to be thankful for this?

If you choose to work for EvilCorp don't be surprised when you get assigned to work on tickets that make people unhappy.

bspammer··on PGSimCity - How PostgreSQL Works
The AI generated text in the tour is a good clue. But I also don’t think the author is denying it.
bspammer··on Show HN: Infinite Jigsaw Game
Fun, but suggestion - don't let the nametags cover the piece area. Very frustrating to not even be able to see the pieces because people are hovering their cursors there.
bspammer··on Terence Tao's ChatGPT conversation about the Jacobian Conjecture counterexample
Imgur decided to satisfy the terms of the UK's Online Safety Act by simply blocking access to the UK.

As someone who lives here it's very annoying but also good on them.

bspammer··on Ten Steps Towards Happiness (2015)
I don't think he had his diagnosis when he wrote this.
bspammer··on Who's afraid of Chinese models?
If that happens one time at any company, it would be discovered and reported on eventually, and people would never trust any Chinese model again. The motivation for China is clearly to prevent America gaining a monopoly on AI, not spycraft. They have much more effective ways to do the latter anyway.
