As long as Disney doesn't 'harm' consumers they are allowed to consolidate. Harm is poorly defined in this case.

bsiemon··on The Sovietization of the American Press
I believe Garland was asked about this specific issue in his hearing. He said that the distinction was that in Portland the 'riots' are not disrupting the normal function of government.

bsiemon··on Search is on for Google workers leaking secrets
Isn't that a false dichotomy? Large organizations can have organizing principles other than profit at all costs. The groups of people that comprise these organizations just choose not to.
bsiemon··on How a Tech Billionaire Created Two Fortunes and a Software Sweatshop
The pervasive monitoring reminds me of the villain in Snowcrash.
bsiemon··on Amazon Plans to Split HQ2 in Two Locations: NY and VA
Northern VA benefits hugely from the Military Industrial complex. There is a large pool of engineers working boring-ish jobs in the security establishment that Amazon can easily lure away.

I think this trumps proximity to the federal apparatus.

bsiemon··on How LeBron James' new public school is the first of its kind
> You can't throw more money at a problem, then declare you've come up with a general solution.

I agree in general that throwing money at a problem by itself is rarely useful. However, I think your statement sets up a false dichotomy. Is the answer to give every school 10 billion dollars? No. Is the answer to fund schools enough that they can give free meals to students and pay teachers enough to stay? Maybe.

bsiemon··on Penti Chorded Keyboard
I think so. If you click through to the videos you see it is all done on a phone. Seems like it would be hard to be fast without tactile feedback. The phone is just a demo of part of the concept.
bsiemon··on Trial wipes out over 80% of Australian disease-spreading mosquito
It depends how on the deal is structured. Public money flows to private hands to fund research. If the research pans out, does any of the profit flow back to the public? Typically not.
bsiemon··on Apple, Samsung Declare Peace
It is interesting to think about these trans-national corporations fighting wars and then signing peace treaties. Used to be only nation states did that.
bsiemon··on Slack outage: Connectivity issues affecting all workspaces
I think that is just the tongue in cheek language they like to use.
bsiemon··on Rural Kansas is dying
It is interesting to consider why there is a preference to work physically together. The hive metaphor could shine some light here. Is telework effective/possible when there are workers and managers? In my experience managers resist telework.

What if we had a pervasive culture of self organization and direction?

bsiemon··on Think about Equity
If you grew up true middle income or poor in the US it is extremely hard to value equity as an adult. Then, if you manage join a company that offers equity, it can be a mental struggle to buy your options even though you have plenty of cash on hand.
bsiemon··on Ford to Stop Selling Every Car in North America but the Mustang and Focus Active
Perhaps this is regional but I strongly disagree that ford doesn't have strong brand identity in trucks. Wars have been fought over Ford v Chevy in parts of Texas :)
bsiemon··on China is trying to police what people are saying about it around the world
Just because Stalin was a monster doesn't mean that quote is bad.
bsiemon··on Canada to Scrap IBM Payroll Plan Gone Awry Costing $1B
Still mentions his full name and title front and center. I think that is what gp was referencing.
bsiemon··on SoftBank Succeeds in Tender Offer for Large Stake in Uber
Does the cost in maintaining/paying for hub airports factor into why airlines are regional? For example southwest has service over most of the US because they use the older/cheaper airports vs United has hubs that don't heavily overlap with American. I don't see the parallel with ride sharing here.

I think Uber/Lyft can take over the whole US since they don't need to maintain much supporting infrastructure. Plus they can get economy of scale in marketing.

bsiemon··on A pattern language for microservices
I disagree. Companies that start with a monolith then face an exceptionally difficult task of 'moving to micro services' because they need that architecture to support team growth. This task amounts to replacing the engine of a running car.

I agree in general the tools are lacking but if you use AWS,GCP, or w/e you get a huge boost on the tooling.

bsiemon··on The Death of Flash and Rewriting 1.4M Lines of Code
If you go to one of the referenced sites: http://www.vegasworld.com. It asks you to enable flash first then will fall back to the html5 site. I wonder why that fallback is configured.
bsiemon··on Disney to Acquire Twenty-First Century Fox
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_The_Clone_Wars_(200... is on netflix right now. I think it was made by lucas arts.
bsiemon··on Wall Street Banks Warn Downturn Is Coming
Should the electronic brain managing these funds do something smart in the event of a down turn? It would be nice if these funds made more rational choices than humans.
bsiemon··on Wal-Mart will pay employees to deliver packages on their way home
UPS/FedEx drivers make decent salaries. I wonder how much base pay impacts desire to steal obviously valuable packages. For a Walmart employee the pay is much lower but they will end up with the same knowledge of where/when packages arrive.

bsiemon··on Hub Git Wrapper
hub pull-request is my favorite feature. It cuts the actions down from many mouse clicks to one command in terminal.
bsiemon··on Spin-in startups from Cisco
This is interesting. It seems like a large bureaucracy like cisco recognized it's own flaws and used this method to get around the institutionalized toxicity to crazy ideas.

You get to leave all the friction of creating new ideas in a large org behind. The price seems incredibly steep vs just creating a company that is friendly to new ideas (of course creating such a company is no easy task).
