bshep··on Pay toilets and NYT: a free market microcosm
Nothing wrong with asking. I think the person was trying to say that places wont let you use their toilets even if you ask.
bshep··on Texas Electric Bills Were $28B Higher Under Deregulation
Its a complicated subject, the power company is a mandated monopoly, its fully owned by the government.

In the 50s or so the infrastructure was created, including power plants etc, it was a profitable venture for the government, so they borrowed against the profits of the energy company, then failed upgrade/update any infrastructure. Add to to that the retirement pensions of all the people which they did not fund and it creates a big problem.

So now as it stands the energy company is in debt ( technically the government owes the energy company money but the government is insolvent ) and they are trying to sell it to a private entity.

Also if you are wondering why anyone would want to get a private pension plan instead of a 401k, well you werent allowed to put your money in a 401k ( same thing happened to the teachers by the way ). It actually very sadto hear the stories of people that worked theur whole life and have nothing to show for it due to the greed of politicians.

bshep··on Texas Electric Bills Were $28B Higher Under Deregulation
I grew up in Puerto Rico, the power company there is run by the government, and serves a counter example. There are many articles about the age of the infrastructure and how it collapsed after Maria and the Earthquake. Of course part of the problem is poor management by the government and uncontrolled acquisition of debt.

There must be some middle ground that works.

bshep··on California law bans delivery apps from listing a restaurant without an agreement
for even more profit become a doordash driver and exclusively ‘deliver’ these pizzas.
bshep··on Set up a Raspberry Pi meteor detector
Here is the Dockerfile in case anyone is interested:

https://gist.github.com/bshep/c33d156fc8769e92ee652b3d82a1c1...

I tested what I could and I think it works. The hardest part was figuring out how to run the opencv install script as it was designed for a directory structure i coult not replicate.

bshep··on Set up a Raspberry Pi meteor detector
Im working on getting this to work on a docker, i already own a bunch of IP cams so it would be trivial to retask one to look for meteors ( to get cool pics for the kids ). If i get it working i’ll post a link to dockerhub
bshep··on USB-C was supposed to simplify our lives, but instead it’s a total mess
IIRC the rectangular peg in the ADB vs PS2 cable were slightly different and hence incompatible.
bshep··on Lunar – macOS utility to set brightness and volume on external monitors
I made an app to wrap around ddcctl that works on osx, it works fine for my own uses and if anyone want to improve it feels free.

bshep··on Zoom Partial Outages
I made a web app to help my wife with our pre-K kids 7 zoom classes, it has made a huge difference and he is able to connect by himself most of the time. I have no idea how non-technical people can cope with this, its still insane but at least manageable.
bshep··on Microsoft Outlook is crashing worldwide with 0xc0000005 errors
For now Outlook for Mac seems unaffected
bshep··on Microsoft's latest Windows 10 updates come with nasty printer bugs
Makes me think someone ( not it ) could develop a device that turns any printer into a network printer and takes care of the driver mess for you.

if it can be made for $50-100 i think it would be a great product.

bshep··on Apple II connecting via acoustic coupler modem and rotary phone (2015) [video]
I grew up with area code 809, which is for the caribbean, almost as bad a yours by 1 pulse.
bshep··on Show HN: Passbox – Give access to your data only after you're dead
sounds reasonable, a couple more questions:

do i provide the trusted contact the access key or how does that work?

When is it generated?

What if add a new trusted contact or remove one how does that change things?

bshep··on Show HN: Passbox – Give access to your data only after you're dead
What prevents a 3letter agency from instructing you to:

1- give access to one of you trusted contact accounts

2- disable sending notifications to the account holders email

3- 3letter agency clicks on request data

4- data gets released ( as it will not get denied if the account holder does not receive a notification)

bshep··on Malicious attack on Wikipedia – what we know and what we’re doing
Looks like you are right, you may be able to join the farm to help ( i have not tested as I am away from my computer at the moment )

bshep··on The Artistry of China’s Ivory Puzzle Balls
Quote from the article:

The region’s method is detailed in an 1876 publication by the Scottish photographer John Thompson, who traveled extensively around China. According to him, an artist first used a lathe to rotate a block of ivory, shaping it into a sphere. They then drilled evenly distributed conical holes towards the ball’s center. Accessing the interior with an L-shaped tool, they would carve grooves to form concentric gaps, creating layers. “Hole after hole is in like manner centered,” Thompson wrote, “until all the grooves are cut, and meeting each other, the innermost ball falls into the center of the sphere. This inner ball is then moved about and carved with long tools passed through the holes, after which the bent chisel is again brought into play to cut out the next ball.”

bshep··on Ask HN: How can I automatically scan and catalog a mountain of books?
A while back i wrote an ISBN barcode scanner which would lookup the item on amazon and fond the price, the script would use your webcam as the source for the image, im sure you could adapt it to your needs, its very simple and has minimal error checking so beware.

bshep··on What has your microcode done for you lately?
My understanding is it shows you the current status of mitigations/patches and allows disabiling/enabiling them. Just my take on it YMMV.
bshep··on Ask HN: What are your “brain hacks” that help you manage everyday situations?
Write things down so you dont bog down your mind with trying to remember things.

Not everything needs to be done today.

One problem at a time, when you’re done with it start with the next one, eventually you will be done or it will be time to go home and continue tomorrow.

Dont bring work home with you.

bshep··on Green tea supplements ruined my liver
As i mentioned above, talk to your doctor, there is no way to know what your specific situation requires ( also good advice is dont take advice from random people on the internet )
bshep··on Green tea supplements ruined my liver
Liver Biopsy - appearance is different depending on etiology
bshep··on Green tea supplements ruined my liver
I work in a transplant hospital ( for liver and other organs ) and we see A LOT of people with liver damage from suplements ( green tea, valerian root, etc ) I would recommend against any supplements unless you clear them with your doctor, some are ok like VitD ( in the correct dosage ) others are downright dangerous.
bshep··on China plans to launch artificial moon bright enough to replace streetlights
My first thoughts were that it sounds like the plot from a Bond movie, but jokes aside, this may be a good thing, essentially ‘free’ lighting at night for the area covered, i wonder how long it would take for the cost savings to match the cost of the satellites
bshep··on Voice Phishing Scams Are Getting More Clever
Also have two accounts:

- Account #1: salaries and deposits go here, no ATM

- Account #2: gets regular transfers from account #1, whatever you spend each week on your ATM, has an ATM, blocked on overdraft

If ATM is compromised the only money at risk is whatever is left in Account #2

This minimizes your exposure

bshep··on Direct Primary Care
The pendulum swings both ways? we started off with direct primary care, then moved to fully insured care, things are moving back towards direct primary care, i believe the model presented in the article or something along those lines will be what the US healthcare system will move to over the next 10-20years.
bshep··on Show HN: Python library to create Siri shortcuts
can you wire up shortcuts to calendar events?
bshep··on Zero-Day Bug Allows Hackers to Access CCTV Surveillance Cameras
Do you mind if I ask what cameras / software you use? or a good site to read up on this topic?

Bonus if it has a mobile app/interface, my use case is video monitoring of my kids rooms while they sleep.

bshep··on Apple self-driving car in accident: California DMV filing
I was rearended in this same situation as well, seems like a common error in human drivers too.
bshep··on Pixelblaze V2 – An advanced LED pattern development engine and controller
A couple of other controllers:

- Falcon PiHat - connect to a Pi and is able to manage 2 string of ~800 LEDs each

- EsPixelStick uses an ESP to run pixels - Can be bought on Amazon

both use a standard Ethernet protocol for sending pixel data.

I use xlights to control them but there are various controllers out there.
