bryanmgreen··on How to Do Great Work
I think it's important to note there are two types of "great work"

1) Where you have work expertise that is objectively higher than your peers or in the top percentile of your industry due to natural skills or experience or both.

2) Where you have do not have top-percentile expertise, but are hitting the limits of your capabilities. Maxing out your performance is the only way to know your limits and get better. Sometimes you just can't improve, but if you're doing your best, that's great work too.

I have my own business and while I think there are people out there who could do it better, everyday I'm putting in my best and learning a lot. What more could I realistically ask for?

bryanmgreen··on Vincent van Gogh's paintings and drawings
My favorite thing to do when looking at paintings is to stand next to it and look at it from a steep side angle.

You can really see the texture and brushstrokes better, which as you said, brings a lot of life to the visual.

bryanmgreen··on The best place to drink is the emptiest bar in the city
The best part of an empty bar to me isn’t just the lack of noise, but total freedom to drink slowly. Delays the effects of inebriation and there is more time to relax and contemplate all your choices in life.
bryanmgreen··on Shopify will be smaller by about 20% and Flexport will buy Shopify Logistics
As a Shopify user, I am conflicted about the Flexport acquisition.

On one hand, it was really nice having a fulfillment partner directly related to the webstore. It gave a sense of harmony for future growth of services. From a stock perspective, it was a money suck, but hey, look at Amazon.

On the other hand, the Shopify web platform feels a little neglected and I hope this will allow them to re-focus. From a stock perspective, maybe this will help get their immediate finances in order.

They've made some solid improvements and additions, but there are a lot of little things that need attention. One of my quibbles is that you can't make private or unlisted products. They're either visible to everyone, or disabled. There are a lot of people asking for that feature, and it's not a hard one to implement. There are a lot of things like this that probably wouldn't take a lot of resources to implement but would significantly improve the merchant experience.

bryanmgreen··on U.S. proposes 56% vehicle emissions cut by 2032, requiring big EV jump
There is an interesting study that has shown SUV drivers tend to be overconfident, likely due to the vehicle size and their driving position, and are less able to judge the speed and capabilities of their vehicles accurately.

bryanmgreen··on U.S. proposes 56% vehicle emissions cut by 2032, requiring big EV jump
Regarding safety related weight, there's a very interesting and thorough study from Berkley, I'd recommend reading, if you want to be nerdy.

[1] https://are.berkeley.edu/~mlanderson/pdf/anderson_auffhammer...

The International Energy Agency has done some good research specific to the subject of SUV emissions.

[3] https://www.iea.org/commentaries/as-their-sales-continue-to-...

And specific to weight, it's topic that is not ignored by federal or state regulating bodies. Heck, even 10 years ago the EPA stated if reduce the weight of your vehicle by 100lbs you can achieve 1-2% fuel improvements. And weight removal is the opposite of diminishing returns, so every pound reduction yields better results.

bryanmgreen··on U.S. proposes 56% vehicle emissions cut by 2032, requiring big EV jump
Correct - a "one-size fits all" solution would be foolish! But... This has been accounted for to not penalize EVs disproportionately :)

Hopefully battery tech can improve at a steady pace that there are in the near-ish future notable reductions in weight.

bryanmgreen··on U.S. proposes 56% vehicle emissions cut by 2032, requiring big EV jump
I am working on research towards the goal of introducing strict federal weight penalties for consumer vehicles.

Cars are simply massively overbuilt for their average use case. Reducing weight of vehicles is a very achievable goal that will cut emissions dramatically while also having additional benefits like global supply chain material and emission reduction, pedestrian safety, and road maintenance.

bryanmgreen··on Apple Music Classical
Is 192/24 discernible to most people with mostly common listening equipment? No.

Should we be complaining that an audio streaming service is offering the highest quality audio? No. Especially because they're not charging a premium for it.

bryanmgreen··on Spanish rail's costly blunder: New trains too large for tunnels
I always wonder how seriously significant and BASIC errors such as this happen...

My experience suggests it's likely because there's too much power at senior levels and lack of ownership at lower ones. Like some senior person says "tunnel needs to be 7 meters wide", everyone vehemently nods in rote agreement, and no one double checks that should actually be 8 meters until some intern discovers the mistake while preparing info for a case study deck.

Any thoughts?

bryanmgreen··on How to get new ideas
Of PG advice/tips/guidance, "Do things that don't scale" I think is still a great starting point and a piece of advice that is a bit less abstract.

When you start from that, only the ideas that most people would never consider float to the top.

It's worked for me and my business.

bryanmgreen··on UPS and the package wars
Anecdotally, I run a consumer goods business and UPS has set me up with a business account for volume discounts and tries to get me to use them for shipping. The irony is that I do use them for shipping, but get cheaper rates from a variety of other label providers. My UPS rep says they can't match them.

Giant corporations never have your best interests top of mind.

bryanmgreen··on Ask HN: If I get locked out of everything, please try to help me
Same! It was such an aggravation
bryanmgreen··on What would it take to bring back the dinosaurs?
Stupidity.
bryanmgreen··on Ask HN: What is the best income stream you have created till date?
Thanks! I have a little video experience, but it was mostly my girlfriend. We wanted something just a bit kooky.
bryanmgreen··on Ask HN: What is the best income stream you have created till date?

I was inspired by "do things that don't scale".

My business creates European hand-blown titanium crystal stemware for whisky and spirits.

This started as my quarantine project and has grown fairly rapidly relative to my expectations. The product is very expensive to produce because each glass is made entirely by hand in Europe but the results are pretty beautiful. It's not a golden ticket financially but it's very stable and healthy.

Most rewarding is the community of spirits enthusiasts and professionals who I've been able to connect with.

bryanmgreen··on Circadian lighting with Home Assistant: Like f.lux, but for your house
Excellent.

I wish that Hue and LIFX would also make a physical adjustment switch/knob for color temperature.

bryanmgreen··on Modernizing my 1980s sound system
One of the best dollar-to-performance purchases for home audio.
bryanmgreen··on I'm common as muck and spent £150 to try a Michelin star restaurant
My takeaway from great meals that is restaurants are snow globes.

You may not remember the food, but you'll always have the memory and all the events and experiences that led up to that time. Years later you can shake that mental snow globe and get a happy nostalgia trip. That's worth the money to me.

bryanmgreen··on To stop building heat islands, stop overbuilding parking lots
Ooooh, related one of my favorite topics.

Part of the reason modern lots are so big and why parking covers so much area is simply because cars are too big! There is zero reason a person needs to own a 7 seat SUV to transport 3 people or five 2x4s twice a year. The proliferation of oversized vehicles continues to exacerbate a significant number of local and global issues and I'm of the belief that we need strong regulation to limit the size of vehicles.

bryanmgreen··on [dead]
I've thought a lot about his legacy lately with the permanently on-going horror story that is Facebook and Mark Zuckerburg.

For all of Steve's flaws, from an outside observer like myself, it seems that his intentions/desires/goals for Apple, Pixar, NeXT were mostly, or at least equally, fueled by genuinely wanting to improve the lives of humans.

Among the rarified air of modern radical world-changing billionaire CEO's, anyone else think this is why there is a fandom for Elon Musk and not like the likes of Bezos? Because, again, despite his flaws, he seems to be at least oriented towards some idea of greater good?

bryanmgreen··on Large cars kill US pedestrians, don't make drivers safer
I drive a 2017 Ford Fiesta hatchback that is 160" long, weighs about 2,600 pounds, and gets a minimum of 26, average 28, MPG in Los Angeles traffic on basic gas.

I've moved with it, put a rack on the top, and drive friends around.

It's got CarPlay, cruise control, even stupid LED lighting for my cupholders.

If that's not punching above its literal size and weight, I don't know what would. Unfortunately this car has been discontinued now.

Nothing in today's market is comparable.

Regulation on size/weight will give cars like this the opportunity to survive.

bryanmgreen··on Large cars kill US pedestrians, don't make drivers safer
If anyone has ANY additional data around the dangers or problems to either people or the environment by large / heavy vehicles, please reach out.

I am preparing arguments for stronger regulation around vehicle size/weight. Focused on non-commercial usage.

Email in profile.

bryanmgreen··on Was cancer less likely in a pre-industrial world?
Probably a dumb question, but I’ve wondered if plastic has anything to do with cancer in the modern era?

Mostly everything we consume these days has been touched by a form of plastic.

bryanmgreen··on Figma: Changes to free plan after April 21, 2021
Airtable is like this and it's frankly insane.

For various personal projects and nerd reasons, I would love to use the apps available for Airtable, but going from free to $20 is bonkers.

I don't need the 20GB or 50,000 records and a year of revision history. I only want the apps.

Why not have a $5/mo a-la-carte upgrade for the free plan where I could purchase app functionality or more records or more storage, depending on my needs and then going to $20 when/if it makes sense?

bryanmgreen··on Israel, Cyprus and Greece agree to link power grids via subsea cable
It 100% is a toxic sector.

Hawaii's education suffers dramatically because the work is all in tourism - this is firsthand knowledge from teachers I know over there.

bryanmgreen··on Ask HN: What tangible benefits did you get from spending time on HN?
Most recently, a job.

And not just any gig. I’m working with a small business that makes awesome products while staying very efficient from an biz ops perspective. It’s great to make an impact and share success with a likeminded team. It’s fun working with physical products again too and I’m learning so much indie e-commerce.

Shoutout to Chad and BoardGameTables.com

bryanmgreen··on Email from Jeff Bezos to employees
Speaking as someone who works for a company called "BoardGameTables.com", we really like our obvious name.

Nothing wrong with something broad. We sell more than board game tables, but everything is connected and it gets us a lot of traffic and search juice.

With SEO getting so much money and attention dumped into it, the usefulness has kind of come back around for a name like this.

bryanmgreen··on Firefox 85 cracks down on supercookies

Using uBlock, Privacy Badger, Decentraleyes currently.

bryanmgreen··on Tell HN: Dropbox now requires access to contacts for Google login

And you may find yourself paying for 5TB of cloud storage with feature bloat...

And you may ask yourself, "Well... how did I get here?"
